I don't see how anyone can prefer the theatrical cut to the special edition- the latter just makes more sense and was the original intention. Thank goodness this release wasn't one of those releases like the original 4K of Star Trek: TMP of the theatrical only.

Because they will surely find idiots buying it.

I do....could not stand the singing and the extra dialogue between Lindsy and Bud..so about half an hour in I turned it off but I do plan to pick it up later from that point just for the helluva it.

Thanks the delivery man to has stolen my copy of The Abyss and True Lies . I saw a delivery car stopped in front of my door. Nobody came outside. He scanned the package near my building otherwise he can't if he is not near my building. 3 minutes later he left. Five minutes later I saw on my mobile that the package has been delivered in my postbox just when the delivery car was there. I went downstair but nothing in my postbox and also nothing in the other postboxes in my building.

It's funny that you say that because I noticed it and I never seen it before until a few days ago, pretty sure my dad noticed it too because I started giggling like a kid and said to him "That guy got pantsed in the bottom left of the frame"

The Abyss Special Edition was completed on film and had prints made that screened theatrically prior to the LD release
My understanding is that two 35mm prints were made.

One of them played in May of 1993 at Denver's Continental Theater, which was (at the time) a magnificent 800 seat theater with a 78-foot-wide D-150 screen.

I saw it on opening night, and it was missing just over a minute of footage, right after
[Show spoiler]Lindsey drowned. It cut straight to Bud surfacing with her in the moon pool. His swim back was missing, with the thumping music and his orders to the crew.

I complained to theater staff, but they just shrugged and said that was the print they got. It had obviously been damaged at a previous location.

Through a random series of events, I had a friend who had met JC's brother Mike, who worked on the film. I got Mike's contact info and called him to let him know about it. Within a week, the footage was restored.

Anyway, that's my tiny little contribution to this film's history.

Was surprised they didn't crop out the guy getting panted during the tidal wave, but still there. Lol.
They didn't just not crop it out, they made it worse. The pantsing was virtually invisible in the Widescreen SE from 1993 (but easy to see on the Fullscreen version).

For the 2023 remaster, they reframed the shot slightly lower for some reason. (Maybe to make the wave more imposing?)

Finally Got my copy delivered on Friday night. Picture is a mixed bag, having said that the emphasis on detail is good, despite the smoothing of skin tones like seen when Hippy is seeing his rat ‘drown’ in the solution. Sound wise however, do not recall the last time I heard an Atmos track that so depended on the height and rear channels. One of the best I’ve heard in a while.

You're missing the point. The statement was made the mix was made for home video. That's not the case with The Abyss SE. It was finished for theatrical.

Is that really a good way to check it, though? If there are glitches that would cause pixelation but the laser can still track it’s way through it, how are you for-sure going to see that since you don’t see every frame during a fast forward?

Big scratch on mine and it pixelated just over the 2h mark from the Theatrical cut. Great...

Was it purchased through Amazon?

I also prefer the theatrical and think it's much better with the aliens keeping their mystique. The whole news footage of the USA/Russia warfare then the extended footage towards the end did absolutely nothing for me and I can definitely see why it was cut. The theatrical has much better pacing also.

On the contrary though, I love that singing scene and really wish it was kept in the theatrical. It helps show early on that this isn't just your average bunch of co workers. They're like a family down there.
