That kind of thing is hardly unusual. I still cringe every time that I'm listening to a commentary track and someone says, "Wasn't this the first time that X was ever used in a film?" Nearly every single time, it wasn't. People tend to live in their own worlds, filmmakers included.

I've heard "This is the first 3D film that..." I don't know how many times. And it's always wrong. Adult 3D films loved to claim they were the first 3D adult film, as if 60's and 70's adult 3D films didn't exist. Same for 3D horror films. I've even seen 3D animated films make that claim.

PVOD version is out and its bad, real bad.

It is somehow worse than the 2017 HDTV version.

I haven’t seen it yet, but I will say that the theatrical screening I just saw was not worse than the 2017, based on color alone, which wasn’t bathed in teal and overblown contrast. Grain was certainly minimized, but fine detail was still quite nice. If the digital version of that same transfer is some abomination, I’d be pretty surprised. I expect something like Titanic. Controversial perhaps, but not “bad”. But I guess I’ll see soon enough.

Good luck convincing folks who base their entire decision on still frames from 2 plus hour movies, and that generally aren’t indicative of the entire presentation.

But really, these Cameron threads are bad…like real bad. He’s certainly digitally tinkered with the films and they don’t look like 35mm film transfers anymore, but folks are really taking the worst of the worst screencaps and blowing things waaaaay out of proportion here.

Because there's some imagined currency in being the most technically savvy person who can claim they know better than the professionals who make these transfers.

The theatrical 4K screening had no obvious upscaling or haloing like whats "apparently" going on with True Lies. Questionable DNR and shifting colors, but otherwise very nice.

All bets are off where matters of taste are concerned and it's where being a "professional" doesn't mean dick. All the "professionals" around people like Cameron and Jackson and Lucas are yes men, and women, who are there to do their master's bidding. If they don't do that they don't get paid.

DNR tech has improved over the years and detail usually isn't the issue anymore. No one thinks this will look like that old Predator disc. T2 is about as DNR'd as you can get but it still has way more detail than the DNR free BD had.

The problem is these movies no longer look like film, and people want a film look. I mean Cameron doesn't, but many enthusiasts do.

T2 may have more detail, but it looks like complete and utter shit.

The Terminator and Aliens Blu-ray remasters were great.

I also liked the unreleased The Abyss and True Lies HD remasters that popped up on streaming services and cable channels a few years ago.

The screenshots for the new True Lies 4K remaster have me worried though.

In 10 years that 8K will be a thing Cameron will decide to upscale The Way of Water to it and make it look like The Way of Watercolor with all the upscale filters he will apply.

I still watch the DVDs of The Terminator, T2 and LOTR Extended films.
I will take lower resolution over borked audio and waxy PQ.

Any comparison pics between the new digital 4K and the old HDTV would be nice.

For True Lies, too. Thanks.

If the caps in the True Lies thread are true and not lies...

That's insane.

It's dark, teal and DNR'd.
