2) We're not getting HFR on this film. Cameron has stated it is intended to improve the effect of 3D films. (which is why it was not only used on Avatar 2, but also back-ported to Titanic 3D and Avatar 3D re-release via processing) |

I had quite a fun time with Avatar 2 in 3D and HFR. It's easy to criticize. He makes entertaining films.

The underwater scenes in Avatar 2 are the only instances of HFR that I actually liked in movies.

Some sources say it was a 2k presentation of the 4k restored version.
https://www.reddit.com/r/4kbluray/co...erything_that/ Unfold the replies to Z3ppelinDude93's post to read about it. My first thought would be... why? You have JC in the room, why would project it in 2k. At least some people say it's not as bad as T2. We'll see in a couple of months... in March ![]() |

![]() I wanted to love Avatar. It was OK but not what I wanted to see. I was hoping for an R-Rated sci-fi flick along the lines of Aliens. I'd been reading about the film for years in magazines like Fangoria and Total Film and I guess I got the wrong impression of what Cameron was going for. It's a beautiful-looking film for sure but I didn't walk away from it satisfied. The sequel was more of the same. I consider it a remake, actually. |

The problem isn't grain vs no grain, it's about textural detail vs no textural detail. There are plenty examples of films where grain has been cleaned by DNR but there is enough detail left in the image where it still looks just fine. I don't intend on complaining until I see actual screenshots and decide the picture is a lost cause like T2.

Is anybody really going to say, "They've scrubbed too much grain -- I'll stick with my non-anamorphic DVD!" --????

^ Degraining a film for any reason, let alone for the purposes of catering to a market that demands clean images, is never a good thing. Just had to get that out there.

If it's T2-levels of DNR, it's going to be rightfully placed upon the worst of the UHDs. But it would still likely be an improvement over a non-anamorpic DVD. Of course color timing will also play into this. I hate Aliens' blu-ray color timing.

I can only imagine the anger towards James Cameron if this release is DNR from hell. Cameron made clear he supervised it, didn't he?

With new info that it was merely 1080p projection on whatever equipment, the posterization issues may have been from that.

The issue regards The Abyss when we finally get it, is that it's the last edition we'll ever see on physical formats so it's important that it was worth the wait and does justice to how it looked theatrically. It simply won't ever get revisited - this is it. This'll be The Abyss to the end of our days.
Hopefully we won't be in a 1977 Star Wars situation. |

Confirmed by James Cameron himself, it looks like a 4K remaster of the special edition is getting a theatrical re-release on December 6 I suspect a 4K release of hopefully (and likely) both cuts will occur soon after |
