The film would have been Uncut with a BBFC 12 rating in the UK, if the so-called "Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act 1937" didn't exist.

Ergo, the BBFC automatically cut out Animal Cruelty/Trips (except "How the West Was Won" [1962] or a few), regardless of what rating distributors have secured for the film in question.

Glad I live in a place where i personally don't take orders for additional censorship to an existing version (UK, Europe and Australia-wise).

Given the age we live in, if the BBFC were really holding up the release I'd expect someone within the industry to speak up on it.

BBFC (British rating board), not BBC.

I'm little confused how they passed Apocalypse Now uncut in Britain, but not The Abyss...

This isn't really true. Filmmakers have intentionally/artistically used heavy film grain for about 50 years. I think you mean it's only recently that film fans started caring.

I do understand trying to eliminate the added noise from a digital scan though, unfortunately some transfers go too far. I own a lot of noisy 70/80s blu rays that I was shocked to see had crystal clear film prints. Most of the time when people refer to film grain in a negative way, they're really talking about digital noise that surrounds the grain after it's been processed.

Reason is 1937 Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act
The animal (a water buffalo, or carabao) was killed - but not for the film. The tribe in the film was a real indigenous tribe that lived in the area, and they had already decided to slaughter it. Coppola merely decided to film the event and edit it into the film
This latter point of the act largely applies to documentary producers, though scenes such as the climactic sacrifice in Apocalypse Now (US, d. Francis Coppola, 1979) have also benefited.

Example a documentary showing animals in distress or be killed or get injured is something that would have taken place regardless of whether or not it had been filmed.

The Abyss is different because it was a film that deliberately shows causing distress to a animal and not a natural event that's not allowed under the act

The Abyss rat scene it's not something that would have taken place regardless of whether or not it had been filmed.
It's not a natural event it was done deliberately for the film

The rat demonstration scene in The Abyss was unsimulated and used real-life oxygenated breathing fluid

Also animal slaughter is permissible (even if made for the film, as in Cannibal Holocaust) if it is a 'quick kill' and the animal doesn't suffer, if its killed humanely.

It’s been cancelled in the UK. A scene UK censors insisted be cut.

Oh noes! It's not like we won't be able to import it from the US or a European country with as much ease as buying a UK version...
