WEB-DL looks better in both of these. Gone Girl is particularly interesting as the blu-ray and WEB-DL have identical masters.

Lends credence to what I've always felt, that 4K streaming looks better than a 1080p blu-ray (and that's before even factoring in HDR).

Streaming has gone a long way. ITunes' quality is quite good. A disc will be even better, but it's hard to blame anyone who is already happy with it. I've heard that the 4K Dolby Vision streams of The Banshees of Inisherin and the TV show Severance look clearly better than their 1080p blu-rays (though at least in the case of Severance, the 1080p blu-rays are also not well-encoded, lots of banding that is not in the stream).

Of course, I know the examples I talked are digitally-shot productions. Where the gap between disc and digital is often far more significant is in anything that has film grain. The grainier, the harder it is to encode well (though shockingly, the Movies Anywhere stream of Lawrence of Arabia is better encoded than the UHD!).

Streaming will cope better with stuff shot digitally but anything with heavy grain it will struggle

Exactly. The encodings in ITunes really pulls signficantly ahead of almost all other services when it comes to stuff shot on film, grainy (also because Apple uses much higher bit-rates than the likes of Netflix, for example). But it still can't compare to a well-encoded disc.

Where are you seeing improvement on the Gone Girl? I've looked at several screens and the 4K stream looks practically identical to the decade old Blu-ray.

It's not obvious in every shot, but this one (focus on faces, missing poster) and this one (focus on glass, mountain dew bottle) are good examples. The streaming bitrate isn't high enough to retain all the grain structure, but details and textures in wide shots are inherently more resolved.

I can see those, but it really seems like a tiny upgrade for going from 1080p to 4K. Obviously the 4K disc would show better detail. I guess I just don't see how this example shows how 4K streams beat 1080p discs, except in the instances where a dated 1080p is against a new 4K master. From personal experience, I'm almost always disappointed by 4K streams.

Zoom in on the shots at like 200% and focus on things like hair, wood grain, asphalt, furniture detail, etc... It's subtle but the extra clarity is unquestionable in nearly every instance.

Again, what's interesting about Gone Girl is that the stream and the blu-ray appear to have identical masters. The blu-ray doesn't have a "dated master" compared to the stream like you're saying. They're the same.

Color grading, framing, grain management, etc.. etc.. are identical.

Again, I see that there is improvement, when zoomed all the way in. It's just basically all but imperceptible in a realistic viewing situation. The part I was focusing on was the statement that 4K streaming is better than a Blu-ray disc. There might be some examples out there, but this isn't a strong one.

It's a Blu-ray from 2015.

4k streaming's often pretty solid video. I rarely buy much physical uhd content due to price these days but may start to add more digital and some stuff goes on sale for around five bucks. It'd be nice if Vudu/FAH did md2d for 4k. Physical uhd is definitely nice for the movies you really want the premium a/v, like a much higher bitrate audio track, extras, etc, or just tangibility. More recent blockbuster stuff I'm usually fine with just streaming from Netflix, etc.

Dune Part Two SDR vs HDR comparison

HDR screenshots, in order to view them correctly on Windows, you must use a Chromium browser with Windows HDR enabled, and the brightness slider set to the value of 31.

I see more of a difference than you do, but I will say there are other factors that make me a physical collector. The biggest one being ownership and censorship, i.e. no one can edit my copy of The French Connection to remove naughty words. Others are how streaming messes with the credits and whatnot, little popups, plus exclusive remasters from labels like Arrow, and my love of booklets included in special releases.

Despite noticing more compression in both video and audio on streaming I would probably be tempted to switch for cost/hassle reasons, were it not for those other things.

Could you do a comparison between the 4K SDR Kaleidescape version of Lawrence of Arabia vs. either the 4K HDR UHD or the 4K HDR Movies Anywhere Stream?

Maybe...
I'm still not sure if I'll keep this very expensive device, because everything DV/HDR10 I've tested from Kaleidescape is very inaccurate (boosted brightness, desaturated colors, raised blacks).

Even if you can't do a comparison, please share screenshots of the 4K SDR version that Kaleidescape has of Lawrence (as far as as I know, Kaleidescape doesn't even have the HDR version, so don't worry about HDR issues from Kaleidescape). We know that the SDR version is sharper, more detailed because it doesn't have the filtering, which is exclusive to the HDR version. But so far, the only screenshots we have of the 4K SDR version are from an old ITunes stream that had typical compression issues. Hence why we would love to have screenshots from the Kaleidescape version.
