I can only comment on the SDR conversion (which should be even more problematic in regard to "too dim"), but I didn't have any issues with the brightness. It's a rather toned down movie for sure, but not too dark imo and it looked great (and I watch with a rather dark SDR conversion). (I'd say my Panasonic even gave me a better compromise than my 200 nits madVR caps produce.)

The one issue I had with the disc was some (typical) banding in the opening titles, which annoyed me a little bit this time, since the movie actually starts during the opening titles (there's some background talk iirc).

Oh that's interesting. Not so much for the compression issues on the BD (Lionsgate gotta Lionsgate) but how the red of the lights skews towards a pinky tone in the SDR, this has bugged the shit out of me for years and I don't mean solely on this film, I mean in general for pretty much anything trimmed to 709 out of a modern DI.

Yeah, remember the whole Vader's saber is pink argument when the DVDs hit in 2004?

That was more to do with very uneven timing to begin with (lightsaber shots were being farmed out to other optical houses by the time of ROTJ) being exacerbated by the awful colour grading of the Lowry masters. And by grading I mean "let's pump up the saturation and contrast!"

The Avengers

Just for the record: The BD is the one that came with the US UHD (don't know/didn't check if it matters).

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/120051

BD (upscaled) left, UHD-BD (madVR/SDR/200 nits) right

Disclaimer as to why the UHD-BD images may appear to be too dim:
[Show spoiler]Please note that the UHD-BD shots have been converted from HDR to SDR using special techniques, which drastically compresses the dynamic range of the original image (the color bit depth has been compressed as well). The UHD-BD shots are therefore not an accurate representation of the original HDR image - dynamic range, colors (tone and intensity) and contrast should be taken with a big pinch of salt and the main focus should be on comparing details. Typically, the image will appear too dark (which is by design when the caps are done at 200 nits; on its own they should be viewed with monitor brightness set to 200 nits), may lack a certain "pop" and may at times also appear "boosted" when compared to the BD shots. The SDR conversion should still give you a good idea of the actual image of the UHD-BD though and one should also be able to at least catch a glimpse of the increased dynamic range. The BD shots have been upscaled for comparison purposes, but other than that should be accurate. You might also want to check out this post of mine (incl. the further link there) where I tried to show/explain this:

That BD still looks magnificent in terms of detail but when you add HDR on top, oh mai. And I know that this is the minor of most minor details but I love that the UHD is in 1.85.

to me Serenity looked among the worst for detail of all the UHD, not only not the bare hint better detail that some 2K finished UHD have but I swear it even looked to have a bit LESS detail in some caps (now maybe the HDR makes it worth it or something, don't know, but for details sure didn't look like it, honestly almost looked potentially worse)

I wonder why mummy UHD vs blu-ray showed a much bigger difference on caps-a-holic than in the comparison in this thread?

Also this thread says Stranger Things barely shows a bump over the blu-ray for detail and yet I just finished watching the UHD and had been marveling that finally a title that has that through a window-like feeling that true, top UHD can deliver? It looked amazingly detailed, can't recall a blu-ray ever looking like that before in terms of detail.

And as you can imagine, I am not very impressed for now (was really hoping for a little more detail wise). But I couldn't resist because of the price and still no regrets. Think I wouldn't have bought it, had I seen my own comparison though.

And I wonder what you are seeing. I'm seeing basically the same difference except for it being different caps (of course).

Don't know what this thread says, but I know what I said initially and that I changed my mind (I didn't compare properly at first and edited my initial comment accordingly).

Having said that, I still wouldn't describe Stranger Things as you just did there resp. there's better.

Well, if you've got a UHD movie that has detail that's roughly the same as the (excellent) Blu-ray but has fantastic HDR and are watching it in converted SDR then you're hobbling the biggest area of differentiation, no?

I made it quite clear in my review that the detail was little better than the regular Blu-ray but that the HDR was the killer app, and there's nothing in your grabs that dispels that notion because the HDR smashes the Blu to bits and loses that blasted greeny tint.

Fair enough, my points still stand though as it's a fabulous example of HDR in action.

no, not trolling and I know it is a ton of work, didn't mean to seem ungrateful, i know it is a drag to do all that work and it is appreciated

I was just honestly wondering about those things.

Just a quickie. The one thing that really stood out me already in motion are the much improved titles.

Genuine question: What is the point of posting comparisons between the BD and UHD versions of the same film...if you're degrading them by converting to SDR?
