4x chroma resolution does its job then on the occasions that this movie actually displays any saturated colour. But for fine detail, I compared one of the shots when Ben has the sniper rifle and there's a house or barn in the background and the wooden slats were better resolved on the Blu-ray. That ain't right.

Hence why I’d love to see some screenshots to help settle this debate.

At least we won't have to worry about the HDR being poorly converted, there's barely any to speak of

I for one still don't own it and still don't intend to buy it. I think I will be buying part 2, because I like Lily James, but that will have to wait since the upcoming months are expensive enough as they are.

Nope - same as Mamma Mia.

But I think I'll be doing some more "now" (I actually got a little tired of it) and people might choose from my current todo list:
[Show spoiler]
Trainspotting 2
Push
Transformers 4
War For The Planet Of The Apes
The Fast And The Furious 6/7/8
King Arthur
Warrior
Red 1/2
Life
Kong
Life Of Pi
Keeping Up With The Joneses
Pan
Lego 1/3
Patriots Day
San Andreas
The Secret Life Of Pets
Suicide Squad
Sausage Party
Independence Day: Resurgence
Star Trek: Beyond
The Legend Of Tarzan
The Girl On The Train
Criminal
The Peanuts Movie
Jupiter Ascending
Angry Birds
Atomic Blonde
Logan Lucky
The Hitman's Bodyguard
Wonder Woman
Mayhem
Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Split
The Huntsman: Winter's War

There's no particular order and it may very well be incomplete. I also remove stuff from that list on a regular basis once someone else did at least a few comparisons and I'll also still do new releases first (also put some "lost" comparisons back in there though - Life comes to mind). Some have such low priority for myself for several reasons that I may politely decline for now though (but will take note at any rate).

Last edited by andreasy969; 09-01-2018 at 05:07 PM. Reason: forgot Trainspotting 2 at any rate ...

Patriots Day caps would definitely be cool to compare. It’s a gorgeous UHD disc.

OK, Patriots Day will be next then. Would've been one of my next picks as well since I'm interested myself (only watched the UHD and never compared).

it would be so useful to have an OP or any other post somewhere with links for all the comparisons of this thread... is it possible?

Here's a link to andreasy969's comparisons https://forum.blu-ray.com/search.php?searchid=46604071, but bear in mind that's just searching for their username plus the word disclaimer. Other members have submitted valuable contributions as well.

I'll say there is now (but as said, I didn't think I was watching a smoothed disc when watching the movie): https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=12248&d2=12247&c=4825

But the UHD gets rid of the compression artefacts. Guess I'm actually glad that I dont have to decide whether or not to upgrade that one.

Patriots Day

Don't have much time for comments, but the BD really looks just ugly in comparison (!) - and that is even with the SDR conversion. The BD looks flat, too bright and imo sometimes actually loses the proper "daytime tone" (#41). There's plenty more detail in several caps as well (#12, #17, #48 etc. - or just look at the lamp in #4).

I honestly recommend buying Lionsgate UHDs over their respective BDs even if one doesn't have a 4K/HDR display yet like myself (especially since Lionsgate titles tend to translate really good to SDR).

I also have some comments below again and I'd like to point to #47 in particular.

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/119430

BD (upscaled) left, UHD-BD (madVR/SDR/200 nits) right

Disclaimer as to why the UHD-BD images may appear to be too dim:
[Show spoiler]Please note that the UHD-BD shots have been converted from HDR to SDR using special techniques, which drastically compresses the dynamic range of the original image (the color bit depth has been compressed as well). The UHD-BD shots are therefore not an accurate representation of the original HDR image - dynamic range, colors (tone and intensity) and contrast should be taken with a big pinch of salt and the main focus should be on comparing details. Typically, the image will appear too dark (which is by design when the caps are done at 200 nits; on its own they should be viewed with monitor brightness set to 200 nits), may lack a certain "pop" and may at times also appear "boosted" when compared to the BD shots. The SDR conversion should still give you a good idea of the actual image of the UHD-BD though and one should also be able to at least catch a glimpse of the increased dynamic range. The BD shots have been upscaled for comparison purposes, but other than that should be accurate. You might also want to check out this post of mine (incl. the further link there) where I tried to show/explain this:

I've been a big fan of the Patriots Day UHD since it was released. It's on the darker side, to be sure, but the colors are so vibrant when they need to be, and the image is so sharp. Nice HDR throughout that gives the image some nice depth.

Yes, despite my Lionsgate comment, the BD is a rather solid one considering Deepwater Horizon or Hacksaw Ridge.

I don’t know if it’s a tone mapping issue or what, but Patriots Day is one of several LG discs (along with Deepwater Horizon and Valerian) that is unwatchably dim unless I crank Dynamic Contrast. I thought it was just my setup but I’ve tried them on multiple TVs and players now and get the same results every time. Something seems really wonky about the HDR encoding.

Star Trek: Beyond

Just like the first two, a very nice upgrade as well (detail, color, real HDR). Reg. HDR/highlights, even @200 nits the UHD is often destroying the BD already.
