The Sony has better compression for the most part, but on some shots I prefer the more muted colour of the SC release. This is how I like to think of it, sunglasses on (SC) sunglasses off (Sony).
Thanks for the screens Andre! |

I wonder if this might warrant a re-issue from sony in the future hmm. That DNR is bad and seems totally uncalled for. They usually know better! But I want to see the movie soon......oh decisions |

Just took a proper look at the caps myself and can also clearly see the poor the compression on the SC. But as ususal, it doesn't bother me that much in motion (or in other terms, I often don't even notice). EDIT: OK, the compression sometimes really is conspicuously poor in motion - 00:25:00 forward for example (first the blue sky and even worse the grey clouds 11 seconds later). But I'll still pick that over the DNR.
With #39 I also just noticed some dirt removal gone wrong on the SC I guess (a carabiner is partly gone). Just sayin'. Also noticed two bad frames and just fixed them (#2 and #18). Doesn't really matter anyway, but with #18 it was even another shot (the proper SC one introduces some print damage though). Last edited by andreasy969; 01-31-2019 at 07:34 PM. |

Wow, didn't realize some of these were getting completely different looking releases in different regions. I guess I should know better. It just seemed like so many were getting identical presentations in US vs UK despite being handled by different companies.
In the thumbnails, I prefer the Sony (more vibrant) but viewed full size, I think I might just prefer the Studio Canal. |

How To Train Your Dragon 2
Went with the second one ... I had to do this one @100, because it would've become "Galveston" otherwise at times. Which brings me to the one "issue" I noticed. As stated in the thread for part 1, AFAICT they pulled down the blacks and if I am right they slightly overdid it, which makes some dark scenes too dark IMHO - not in a "You're not watching it properly!" manner, but in a 'it's too dark now' manner (not crushed though). The black levels of the BD were completely fine as they were AFAICT. But don't take my word for gospel either. The blacks are the reason why I also "obsessed" a little over dark scenes ... (in particular #17 and #18, but others like #26 for ex as well) Other than that: Plenty of "real" HDR and I'm as pleasantly surprised by this release as I am disappointed by Sony's Cliffhanger. (the 2 dragons were a no-brainer at the given price point anyway, despite the BD of part 2 being rather flawless already) No mouse-over since the difference in resolution is very minor and the HDR is the main difference here anyway (I also avoid using that site whenever I can ...). BD (upscaled) left, UHD-BD (madVR/SDR100 nits) right Disclaimer as to why the UHD-BD images may appear to be too dim and please ignore any off-looking colors: [Show spoiler] 1. ![]() ![]() 2. ![]() ![]() 3. Yes, that's what I thought as well. (but didn't want to point it out because it's so minor)
I actually didn't expect anything from this, so was really suprised by the HDR even though it's a mix of gimmick and real on closer inspection IMO (most of the detail is there already, but you cannot really see it). I will save this one for the future though. |

Django (SE UHD vs Arrow BD):
I borrowed the Arrow caps from this review (whether that was the best option I cannot know, but I didn't want to use beaver's): http://www.rockshockpop.com/forums/c...Blu-ray-Review The original BD caps were jpgs, but I at least went png with the upscales to avoid "double compression". Either the BD caps or the Arrow do have an aliasing problem (so I really don't know if those caps were the best choice...) - basically look at anything "red" (not only the title, also #9 for ex). The frames are all correct (even the annoying close-ups ![]() Main reason I changed my mind reg. doing this comparison was the difference in color. The source is exactly the same at any rate - incl. specks and scratches - but if those BD caps are accurate, I for one prefer the warmer UHD. I (obviously) would've picked different shots myself, but that's the best I can do (too many close-ups and not enough wide shots IMHO). But you could still compare some of my previous caps yourself with beaver's for ex even if the frames don't match. Others are more qualified than I am in distinguishing noise/compression from actual grain, but AFAICT everything that might be "fishy" on the UHD is basically there on the BD as well resp. it's not better - the UHD looks like the digital RAW material to my eyes. And the source really seems to be a rather "rough" one. tl/tr: I'd pick the UHD BD-R over the Arrow BD for sure. That is if I had the means to create a backup, since I really don't trust the lifespan of a BD-R - not for that money in particular - and was fine with the English dub only. (I qualify for both) But please take the comparison with a grain of salt! Thanks as always Andreas. It may well be that the Arrow has that slightly pinkier hue, or it could be another case of someone doing a Tooze; that is, they've captured the images in the wrong colour space so it makes them look pinkier than they should be.

I would really love to see screenshot comparisons for The Little Mermaid Limited Issue DVD, the Platinum Edition DVD, the Diamond Edition Blu-Ray, and the Signature Collection Edition Blu-Ray and UHD. I want to see how the transfers have evolved over the past 20 years.
