IM1-2 were shot on film. It will be interesting.

The noise is a natural side effect, just like grain was for film. It's not necessarily that people are like "oooh video noise!" It's that removing it effects the image.

Fair enough and I very well remember me preferring the UHD here as well. Somehow still doesn't annoy me as much as Cap does. (Also really not looking for excuses, but the BD looking more fake-grainy rather than noisy maybe had sth to do with it? Don't know.) Anyway, yes "10 Cloverfield Lane" has its waxy moments as well, but somehow managed to get away with it (with me that is).

Sure, I mean it's not that there aren't still different levels of this processing to contend with, they're not all being done with a set and forget filter (as evinced by the 'archive' footage in Winter Soldier being untouched) but nonetheless this is happening on a fairly regular basis with digitally shot stuff on UHD. As always, there are different thresholds that people will have before it gets too 'waxy' and lifeless to their eyes.

Are there any Planet of the Apes Trilogy BD/UHD comparisons out there? Was thinking on upgrading my BDs of Rise and Dawn but glossing over the respective threads didn't quite bring me to a conclusion.

Only own the 3rd one, never saw caps of Rise and Dawn either and/but have expressed interest in caps myself. So have to pass this time. Going by what I've read, I decided to stick with my Rise and Dawn BDs though. I believe I also remember a banding comment with one of the two which was part of that decision - can't stand distractions.

(It's not an actual argument, but I also hate the artwork of the indiviual Rise and Dawn UHD releases, love my Rise and Dawn3D US slips and don't want to buy the trilogy.)

Yeah, the BD really sucks. I actually remember that I forgot #15 in my "pointless list", but didn't edit the list, because one can perfectly see the poor BD in the thumbs already in this case.

I may very well remember it wrong. (or it was the setup).

Dawn did have some minor banding. I can't remember the exact time stamp, but it's during one of the scenes where a ton of gray/fog is featured. I think it's during the sequence where the apes kick out the dude that had the gun.

Me being me, I just checked both threads and didn't find any "banding" there. So there's that.

I also saw your reviews and remembered your odd screenshot-comparison with Rise. I guess there once was some proper information (as in sth I can see with my own eyes) though that might sway me - click on your link and you'll know what I mean.

EDIT: The link to the link: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=160

Thanks. So maybe it was you? But then again, I do remember BR2049 as well (really no hard feelings!) and banding can be a ***** re. the setup of course.

I think I'd stick with the Dawn BD at any rate (both because of the comments and the possibilty of banding).

I only remember it in one scene.

I’d still do the upgrade, though. The gas station scene in Dawn has some incredible HDR.

It was a photo of some highlights on a window, I doubt it would've gotten you too excited.

See? Whenever I get back to the apes, my final conclusion is "just stick with your BDs". (which are both really fine IMO)

Yeah, only caps will settle this one I'm afraid. Is there any increase in detail or is this one basically the BD with HDR? More likely SDR caps would reveal a darker image (due to conversion) and perhaps slightly better compression.

Black Hawk Down

Just an "HDR quickie" and mainly some titles... (#4 being both about the different titles and the HDR) BD is the new, old Sony one.

BD (upscaled) | UHD-BD (madVR/SDR/200 nits)

Disclaimer as to why the UHD-BD images may appear to be too dim and please ignore any off-looking colors:
[Show spoiler]Please note that the UHD-BD shots have been converted from HDR to SDR using special techniques, which drastically compresses the dynamic range of the original image (the color bit depth has been compressed as well). The UHD-BD shots are therefore not an accurate representation of the original HDR image - dynamic range, colors (tone and intensity) and contrast should be taken with a big pinch of salt and the main focus should be on comparing details. Typically, the image will appear too dark (which is by design when the caps are done at 200 nits; on its own they should be viewed with monitor brightness set to 200 nits), may lack a certain "pop" and may at times also appear "boosted" when compared to the BD shots. The SDR conversion should still give you a good idea of the actual image of the UHD-BD though and one should also be able to at least catch a glimpse of the increased dynamic range. The BD shots have been upscaled for comparison purposes, but other than that should be accurate. You might also want to check out this post of mine (incl. the further link there) where I tried to show/explain this:

Sony really go balls to the wall when it comes to HDR, those are some semi-ridiculous numbers. Can't wait for 5000-nit displays to be able to watch it properly!

>8000.

While actually being rather bright in general, the extreme numbers with #5 and #11 just stem from the small specular highlights though (with #11 the bright spots on the left for ex). But they did future-proof the release for sure.
