They could always make it a trilogy where the third film jumps past the end of Aliens, wouldn't be that far-fetched.

They will.

They won't.

Alien Anthology already exists. But, with the Prometheus Universe and Ridley and crew, that won't happen. A lot depends on the prometheus sequel, but I think it is less and less likely that they will even bother to make a direct prequel to Alien. There really isn't a need to do that. Ridley already told us how and why the derelict wound up on LV-426.

They made the effort to change this from being a direct prequel. They're not going to all of a sudden connect it like that. If anything, I think Prometheus 2 takes it further from the Alien series than the first one did.

Yeah, Scott and Lindelof have both said that the sequels would move further and further away from 'Alien'. So if any of you are expecting the story to link up with the beginning of that film, you're gonna be disappointed.

Frankly, it makes me happy since I thought the final shot of this film went a step too far. It's hard to argue that the movie wasn't a prequel when you end your film like that. I rather wish they'd left it out.

It makes me happy too.

I do agree that the final shot wasn't needed even though I thought it was cool. The movie did a good enough job of going in it's own direction
[Show spoiler]with the focus not being on the aliens like some might have expected. Given how the movie ended before that with Shaw, it looked like it was added on even more so.
In the end, I'm not really complaining and it didn't change anything for me as I thought it was cool, but I'll still be honest.

Same here. I wanted something original and I got it. They don't even have to address the deacon again if they don't want to. I'd rather they finish up the main story here and leave a few threads like the deacon hanging here and there. Again, I like it when movies breathe and allow me to continue on with my own adventures in my own head.

Why? In my opinion, this movie was better than any in the Alien series.

Actually 135M is probably closer. But how much % of the foreign BO does the studio get?

Look in the opposite direction to box office take and consider how much the film may have been presold by the studio. I will say right now that Prometheus has probably managed to garner the best part of $70m through pre-sales at least, so when it had a $50m opening weekend with the studio taking 80% of that (opening weekend only) that meant that the film had recouped $110m of it's budget. Add to that the international box office take and Prometheus is slowly taking in a tidy profit. Still recon it needs to make $130m domestic for Fox to greenlight a sequel though. Prove me wrong.

Don't be concerned about it. Prometheus is profitable and there is much more to come. That, in itself doesn't mean there will be a sequel. The film could be a loss leader and still get a sequel. If Fox wants to go with a Prometheus franchise, because the Alien franchise is done, they will do it. I believe that is the case.

The top two profitable studios are Warner and (Fox) news Corp.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...fitable-166988

Production cost was probably closer to 120 mil with tax credits. They got a lot of help with marketing costs from partners like Coors, Amazon and Verizon VIOS, which pumped in in excess of 30 mil. The viral marketing is cheap.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prometh...ilm)#Marketing

Trying to determine profitability is a slippery slope. Hollywood accounting is very creative. Showing a profit it not the objective.

To answer Duffy;s question: Currently a studio takes in 55% of worldwide gross.

PROMETHEUS is fast dying at the box office. This weekend's domestic gross is pretty pathetic. (I think the total budget for this was closer to $170 to $190 Million.) Just as with Fox's ill-conceived remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, I very much doubt there will be a sequel to this. But ALIEN fans doesn't despair, Fox will no doubt attempt a reboot yet again in the next five years. That's what Hollywood does these days, sequel, prequel, reboot... sequel, prequel, reboot.... then the remake, then the prequel to that, then the reboot yet again.
