[Show spoiler]Movies.com: The film asks very big questions about where we come from as a species, and where we go when we die. It’s not possible to deliver concrete answers, but I’m hoping you can tell me how, in the planning stages of the script and story, you came to decide which open-ended, philosophical questions you would at the very least attempt to answer definitively.

RS: Well, from the very beginning, I was working from a premise that lent itself to a sequel. I really don’t want to meet God in the first one. I want to leave it open to [Noomi Rapace’s character, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw] saying, “I don’t want to go back to where I came from. I want to go where they came from.”

Movies.com: So that was always going to be the natural ending for this film?

RS: Totally. And because they’re such aggressive f**kers … and who wouldn’t describe them that way, considering their brilliance in making dreadful devices and weapons that would make our chemical warfare look ridiculous? So I always had it in there that the God-like creature that you will see actually is not so nice, and is certainly not God. As she says, “This is not what I thought it was going to be, and I think we should get the Hell out of here or there won’t be any place to go back to.”

That’s not necessarily planted in the ground at the tail end of the third act, but I knew that’s kind of where we should go, because if we’ve opened up this door -- which I hope we have because I certainly would like to do another one – I’d love to explore where the hell [Dr. Shaw] goes next and what does she do when she gets there, because if it is paradise, paradise can not be what you think it is. Paradise has a connotation of being extremely sinister and ominous.

Movies.com: You throw religion and spirituality into the equation for Prometheus, though, and it almost acts as a hand grenade. We had heard it was scripted that the Engineers were targeting our planet for destruction because we had crucified one of their representatives, and that Jesus Christ might have been an alien. Was that ever considered?

RS: We definitely did, and then we thought it was a little too on the nose. But if you look at it as an “our children are misbehaving down there” scenario, there are moments where it looks like we’ve gone out of control, running around with armor and skirts, which of course would be the Roman Empire. And they were given a long run. A thousand years before their disintegration actually started to happen. And you can say, “Lets’ send down one more of our emissaries to see if he can stop it. Guess what? They crucified him
You mentioned above

I am lost. I do not remember any of that even referenced in the movie. If someone has not read a lot of the back history, they could never catch the Christian symbolism?

I'm pretty sure it is discussing the reason for the engineers wanting to destroy us. If you look into the year that most of Prometheus is set in, 2093, and then do math on how dated the findings are on lv-223 (2000ish years), will take you to the year of 0093 After Death (of Christ). If he was indeed from the same origin as the engineers and was sent to earth to help us, only to later be killed, it would make sense as to why the engineers would see us as a lost cause. So they start preparing a weapon for human annihilation. Then something goes wrong and it is discovered by the Prometheus crew 2000 or so years later.

Where is the Jesus type reference? I never caught on to any hint that one came before and he was killed.

This is a love it or hate it kinda film for sure. Very few people have come in here and said "meh, it was okay." We get:

"IT WAS FANTASTIC!"

or

"I hope Scoff and Lindorf spontaneously contract genital warts!"

lol

Jesus was never directly referenced, as Ridley Scott has said, that would be "a little too on the nose."
[Show spoiler]It's merely hinted at by the carbon dating. I suspect this theme may be explored further in the next film as it will center on Shaw uncovering the truth behind why the Engineers want to destroy mankind.

Other religious symbolism I noticed includes:

Prometheus landing on Christmas
David 8 being referred to by Weyland as the Son of Man (ironically a quick google search for "David 8, Son of Man," turns up a biblical reference in Psalms 8 where David refers to himself as the Son of Man)
David washing the feet of Weyland
The fact that his name is David
Elizabeth Shaw's cross necklace
Shaw giving birth to the Trilobite when she was considered barren

I'm sure there are plenty of others, but I've only seen the film once so far

Must...go see...the film...again!

And since it's budget was around $130 mil(which I find remarkable)...

that would seem to guarantee a sequel guys.

OK, now I have a question for everybody that's seen the movie-

So what did Ridley Scott EXACTLY mean buy saying regarding this film-

[Show spoiler]“What I want to do is scare the living shit out of you!”

Obviously that was absent from the film.

Scared me . But, then, I don't watch horror movies ('Alien' is probably the only one I like).

I'd be "quite" surprised if the budget was only 130M. That doesn't sound right, but, yes, I'm "quite" sure there will be a sequel. There was a 60% drop this weekend which is more than I thought it would be (similar to SW&TH last week), but still enough to come in at the second spot over the weekend....not a good weekend for the box office to be sure (I didn't even go). Next weekend, look for a dramatic drop off for Madagascar (Brave) and a lesser one for Prometheus (unless everyone flocks to see a former US President go all axe murderer on Selene).

This movie will do just fine until 7/3 (SpiderMan). At that point, we start at square one.

That $130M number is correct, shocking as that sounds.

Honestly, I think the reason for the lack of a scares and toned down intensity is because we watched the PG-13 cut DESPITE the R rating it ended up with. As far as I know, the version we watched in theaters was the version that Ridley thought SHOULD have garnered a PG-13 rating. PG-13 films are simply NOT scary and are too toned down to be effective as horror. Aside from the med pod sequence, I see no reason why this film should have gotten a R rating. Maybe next time he can film and edit the film as a true R picture from the get go.

Man...I hope Fox greenlights a sequel soon and gets Ridley started on it pronto. At 74 he isn't getting any younger and I, for one, want him to complete his vision!

No worries. The man loves making movies. When he does eventually pass (not for many years hopefully), it'll probably be in the middle of a film shoot.

I thought the film has plenty of freaky bits, although I found the trailer to be more terrifying.
