Well, that's unfortunate tha they couldn't find a better compromise. I'm usually the one explaining the deeper meaning of imagery in films. And yet, I didn't even get the first hint of any further explanation regarding the subtext they intended through the relationship between creator and humanity.

I'm not saying they needed to be explicit. They just needed something more noticeable for the general public to pick up on the ideas. It was far too subtle for my tastes.

Nah, I don't see how that could be considered ODing...

I ended up enjoying Prometheus. A couple of parts were a little slower than they could have been and it could have been more intense, but I'll gladly be buying the 3D combo pack when it comes out.

I like the majority of the main cast. It was nice to see Noomi Rapace as the star. I'm glad she got chosen to be the star, especially if they work out a sequel. Michael Fassbender was good as usual.

Disappointment or not for you, it has obviously given you a lot of discussion, which says something I guess.

While you ponder the Christmas Tree on Christmas Eve
[Show spoiler]and the birth of the Trilobite and Deacon on Christmas Day, don't forget to consider that Shaw was supposed to be unable to conceive children, yet she gave birth to the Trilobite. Another religious parallel, obviously referencing the Virgin Mary.

Ahh...good catch.

I was kinda wondering about that when I saw it and thought, why did they throw that in there? They could have done without that brief exchange of knowledge.

Now my eyes are opened wider.

I have tried to avoid reading much of this thread, so in summary, can someone please post:

1- What is with all the Christian conversation and the movie?
2- What are the plot holes?

I went in wanting to be entertained and I was. I did not think there were many "plot holes" at all. It seemed to fit together for me.

Thanks again everybody. I can't wait to watch this.
Hope you enjoy it.

I think that it's not so much about plot holes as it is disagreement with how certain plot elements are resolved.

People were generally aware that Prometheus is a loose prequel to the Alien series but the start of a new saga in its own right. Yet, in my understanding the disappointment comes from the whole concept of the Engineers. They made humans, they potentially made the black goo as a bioweapon to destroy earth, etc. This begs the question, who created the Engineers? When you look at it, the Engineers are more or less a dispensable element of a larger allegory about creation. Even Ridley said they are kind of like angels in terms of their responsibility.

I appreciate the ambition of the script, but it's just a bit messy. Similar problems as Lost. I don't think unanswered questions are an issue. The answers are more or less there. The main issue is that when you break it down the script doesn't really do anything new or inventive. It's a very familiar concept wrapped in a slightly different package. However, just as in the case of Lost, people seem to be looking for a grounded, rational basis for the story's events. If people are interested in scientific explanations of the origin of life, they would be better off reading Darwin than watching any movie.

Why oh why are we being teased with these images with the Blu-ray so far off?! Whether we get an extended cut or just deleted scenes (though I rather hope it's both ), I seriously cannot wait to dive into the excised material.

Well, in setting up the mythology for Prometheus, Ridley Scott utilizes a lot of Christian allegory and symbolism. Here's a few answers he provided to Movies.com which offers some insight. Warning, spoilers ahead:

[Show spoiler]Movies.com: The film asks very big questions about where we come from as a species, and where we go when we die. It’s not possible to deliver concrete answers, but I’m hoping you can tell me how, in the planning stages of the script and story, you came to decide which open-ended, philosophical questions you would at the very least attempt to answer definitively.

RS: Well, from the very beginning, I was working from a premise that lent itself to a sequel. I really don’t want to meet God in the first one. I want to leave it open to [Noomi Rapace’s character, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw] saying, “I don’t want to go back to where I came from. I want to go where they came from.”

Movies.com: So that was always going to be the natural ending for this film?

RS: Totally. And because they’re such aggressive f**kers … and who wouldn’t describe them that way, considering their brilliance in making dreadful devices and weapons that would make our chemical warfare look ridiculous? So I always had it in there that the God-like creature that you will see actually is not so nice, and is certainly not God. As she says, “This is not what I thought it was going to be, and I think we should get the Hell out of here or there won’t be any place to go back to.”

That’s not necessarily planted in the ground at the tail end of the third act, but I knew that’s kind of where we should go, because if we’ve opened up this door -- which I hope we have because I certainly would like to do another one – I’d love to explore where the hell [Dr. Shaw] goes next and what does she do when she gets there, because if it is paradise, paradise can not be what you think it is. Paradise has a connotation of being extremely sinister and ominous.

Movies.com: You throw religion and spirituality into the equation for Prometheus, though, and it almost acts as a hand grenade. We had heard it was scripted that the Engineers were targeting our planet for destruction because we had crucified one of their representatives, and that Jesus Christ might have been an alien. Was that ever considered?

RS: We definitely did, and then we thought it was a little too on the nose. But if you look at it as an “our children are misbehaving down there” scenario, there are moments where it looks like we’ve gone out of control, running around with armor and skirts, which of course would be the Roman Empire. And they were given a long run. A thousand years before their disintegration actually started to happen. And you can say, “Lets’ send down one more of our emissaries to see if he can stop it. Guess what? They crucified him

Thumbs up Agree with CVM!

Saw it in IMAX 3D a few hours ago and had a WONDERFUL TIME! Yes, a few things struck me as odd. Most have already been pointed out, but what really bothered me was
[Show spoiler]Shaw having intensive surgery and running around with only a minor annoyance in her gut. (I've had surgeries that involve cuts no bigger than 2 inches in my abdomen, and I personally couldn't walk two steps without doubling over in extreme agony!)
However, none of that really bothered me. Wasn't looking for anything deep. I went in wanting a cool sci-fi movie with touches of "Alien", and that's what I got.

The 3D was quite amazing... in my opinion, of course. I've read that some found it blurry, but I've read the same thing about other 3D movies and haven't encountered this... unless I tilted my head to one side. If I kept my head straight, though, everything was perfectly clear, and at certain points I felt like I could reach out and grab something! (Especially during the "planetarium scene"!) This is only the second 3D movie I've seen where things actually popped outta the screen. (The first was "Alice in Wonderland". Which was indeed my first experience with a 3D movie.)

Gave it a 4 because I was genuinely entertained the entire time! Had to subtract a point because of some of those story issues, but otherwise I had a great time at the movies and can't wait to see this sucker in The Den!

Just got back from my second viewing.
This time round i wanna see it again. Even more so then the first.

[Show spoiler]Why did Holloway look at the green crystal then at the Alien mural with a look of concern. And the comment he made seemed worrying.
Is it of any importance?

[Show spoiler]She did double over in pain quite a lot and collapse a few times as well. She also pumped herself full of painkillers (for lack of the proper word).
