Prometheus Review Thread (Spoilers)

I came across this on another movie board... this guy raises an interesting question; has anyone considered this yet?

[Show spoiler]The whole movie revolves around the Engineers having given various ancient civilizations pictures of a planet formation that would eventually lead us to the planet that the film takes place on.

And this planetary diagram was given to us before the Engineers decided they didn't like us anymore.

But the planet itself is NOT the Engineers homeworld, nor was it another planet that the Engineers seeded life on. The only thing on the planet was the Engineers' bio-weapons and ooze and stuff. Even assuming there were none of the harmful bio-weapons stuff there back when the Engineers first left the diagrams on Earth, there's really nothing significant about that specific planet at all.

Sooooo......why did the Engineers leave ancient Earth civilizations the diagram to find a planet that was either more or less inconsequential OR full of deadly bio-weapons?

At first, I thought he was acting on his own after having developed a "god complex" while all alone on that ship; I thought he did it kinda because it was within his ability to do so. But I was talking to one of my friends earlier about this movie, and he thought David did what he did because he was following orders (per the "Try harder" conversation with Weyland)

The short answer is yes,

[Show spoiler]David was following orders. Remember that Weyland is David's creator and that he is subservient to him. The film uses a lot of religious allegory in their relationship to demonstrate this such as David washing Weyland's feet, and Weyland referring to David as son of man in his speech early on in the film. The true nature of the mission of Prometheus was always about Weyland's desire for immortality and to cheat death. After David discovers the black goo but doesn't have any idea was its effects are, Weyland asks him to "try harder," suspecting that the goo might hold the key to his own immortality. When David experimented on Dr. Holloway with the black goo, he in fact didn't violate his own code of ethics as he asked Holloway for his permission in his own round about way. He asks, "How far would you go? What would you be willing to do to get what you came all this way for?" and Holloway answers by saying, "anything and everything," after which of course David poisons his drink, in effect using Dr. Holloway as a guinea pig.

[Show spoiler]The cave paintings only point to a specific star system, not a planet. Where Prometheus landed was a hypothetical guess within the star system as to where they would most likely find life.

Not to be a Naysayer guys, but i think that i will wait until it comes straight from the source about Prometheus 2 being made, as it is giving fans who thought the film had too many unanswered questions a form of hope.

Let the film make back it's $130m budget domestically and then we may see an announcement.

Is it weird to feel connected to the characters?

I don't think he will be near as rough because his body doesn't have a head. Was listening to the radio this morning and the guy mentioned something about Prometheus making just a hair over $20 million (domestic) this weekend. I guessed $20-$25 million but really figured closer to $20 so that mark doesnt surprise me at all.

I saw it Saturday with the SAME people that I went to the midnight showing with and we were the only ones in the theater. Its great, we discussed the movie all over again.

Saw it yesterday. I went in with no real expectations because I was interested but not psyched about the flick like a lot of others here. It was about what I expected.

One thing that really stuck out for me was that final scene. It just felt completely tacked-on to pander to the fans who wanted a more direct connection to the Alien movies. Feels like something they slapped on after test screening complaints.

Still, it's a big dropoff (about 60%), but I agree....not a total surprise. This weekend was SO weak, I thought the hold would be slightly better. Expect it to be in the realm of 120M by the time SpiderMan hits the theaters and have a precipitous dropoff after that......like everything else.

I know, but this doesn't really bother me that much. When people are in panic, they don't really think, but just react. And I'm sure when an object that is size of a building falling towards you, not many of us are going to be calm enough to think to go side ways but just to run straight. And maybe in her point of view, the structure is so large that she couldn't even see the opening at the side. So, I'm good with not letting this bother me too much.

This thread is so large that we can't check back what the answers to some of our questions. I missed the most basic answer about this being not the direct prequel to Alien.

let me see if I can answer this. I think I read some pages back about this...

[Show spoiler]Tree is the Christmas tree (we see captain putting it up when they arrive). So the tree is important because it reveals the date (Christmas Eve) Then later we found out from the carbon dating(from the head?) that this happened about 2000 years old.(When the Jesus Christ was around) So it says something about the religion and Jesus Christ. So when the alien is finally born on the next day(Christmas), it's referencing that. Maybe implying that it's an anti-christ, destructor of human kind.

Also from the director's separate interview, we found out that indeed the one of the Engineer was sent to earth, and he was Jesus Christ. And the whole reason that the Engineers are trying to kill all of us with the bio-weapon is that we killed(crucified) Jesus(one of them) And Ridley Scott thought revealing this is too "on the nose" so he took it out but left hints with the tree and the date.

I don't know much about marketing, but I'll bet those profits factor into whether or not they do a sequel. They also get money from HBO, Showtime, broadcast TV, etc. Maybe even action figures and games
