It was like it was intended to be an Alien prequel, but they all changed their mind halfway through and didn't correct what was already done. |

If you recall, for the first year and a half "It's an Alien prequel and we are going to see where their home world" {pandemonium ensues as we rejoice that Ridley will now take us to their home world}. Then if I recall right, approx 6 months into production, here comes the gut punch: "Oh, sorry, no, it isn't a prequel, though that may come later". Notice how quickly Fox shut down pre-production on Alien V when the internet exploded about it and everyone got really excited? Gotta save that hype for Prometheus II & III. It would not shock me for them to shoot both back to back like BTTF 2 & 3. Last edited by Narcissus; 01-15-2016 at 01:35 AM. Reason: spelling |

I just wanted to make this Thread to actually figure out what issues people have with Prometheus? I've actually seen a lot of people saying that they actually enjoyed it, so where does all the dislike come from?
I personally enjoyed it for what it was. It's a prequel, it was not made to be dark and horrific like the original Alien is, because it's supposed to be establishing the Aliens place in the Universe and how they came into being. I think most people dislike it because you don't actually see the original Xenomorph from the original Alien, plus it's not the same movie style as the original. Again, it's not supposed to be a clone of the original, it's supposed to set an origin. It would be nice to know what actual problems people had with the movie that made them dislike it so much, and maybe these issues could be addressed. What are your views on Prometheus? I don't think it's fair that it gets the amount of dislike that it does receive, do you find that fair? |

Some stupid little character bits bring down what's otherwise a really good movie that's surprisingly ambitious for a summer tentpole. Beautifully shot, and I don't mind how open-ended it is nor how detached it is from Alien (in fact, that's kind of an asset), but damn, there is some stupid stuff in there from a group of supposedly brilliant characters.

Bad casting was my biggest criticism.
Noomi Rapace was wrong for that part imo. All the supporting actors ranged from bad to extremely mediocre, with the exception of Idris Elba. And the story could've been better. The writer could've done more to actually make us care about the characters. Still I didn't think it was a bad movie. ...just fell short of what it could've been. |

I enjoyed it very much... perhaps a lot of people didn't care for it because they were expecting aliens to be running around mauling people and it didn't go in that direction...
when you consider the likes of Alien 3, Alien:Resurrection, AVP 1 and 2..... Prometheus is the 3rd best film in this series as far as I'm concerned... |

I loved Prometheus.
- Not the same old ALIEN film - Gave an explanation for the Space Jockey - Pleasantly ambiguous. I enjoy movies that leave some aspects to the viewers imagination - Deacon was really cool - The surgery scene was one of the most intense sequences I've seen in a long time. Insane! - LOVED Noomi - Offers something new with every viewing - Some of the most jaw-dropping cinematography I've ever laid eyes on - Offers room for more story without directly linking to ALIEN (Covenant) I think the major issue I constantly hear about is the biologist. I believe people of a certain profession CAN get curious about new species...even dangerously curious (Steve Irwin anyone?). And the world is full of idiots, so it's plausible people. |

I liked the movie a lot, and I don't think there are any plot holes. Its just that people don't pay attention to what's going on.
The big thing people don't seem to get is that the set up on the planet is there to "make xenomorphs" but we don't see the full process. There are two types of "goo" and multiple creatures that need to be genetically melded together to make the actual xenomorph from Alien. We see both goo types used individually, and each of 3 creatures (the worm, the squid, and the deacon) separately. To make an actual xenomorph you need both goo types affecting all three creatures in the right order to get a xenomorph and not a deacon at the end of the process. The other major complaint is why the characters make stupid decisions. Example one: the animal expert playing with what we know is a deadly creature. Well, he didn't think it was going to have crazy strength and acid spit but like many horror movie characters, he did something stupid to move the plot forward. Example two: people think the mapmaker guy got lost. He didn't. He (and the other guy he was with) couldn't get out fast enough before the storm hit. So they stayed in the caves and explored. Not a "plot hole" just people not paying attention. Another complaint is why did David poison that one guy? Shouldn't he be programmed not to? Well, no. He's programmed to help the old guy find a way to extend his life. Everyone else is expendable. Another broad complaint: why do all these so-called experts make stupid mistakes? They're not experts! The one guy is using drugs on the job, and they're all just sort of along for the ride. The old guy didn't hire the best and brightest (and it shows) just because he wanted to further knowledge. He wanted people he could control to get what he wanted (aliens to be able to extend his life). He chose mid level people and C students to do that. Throw a bunch of money at people and they'll do whatever you want. Sorry I don't recall all the names anymore. Its been awhile. |

It is my favorite film, give or take Alien.
No, really. It is. (and no, I am not a kid and did not begin to watch movies yesterday) Why? Because it blends perfectly two elements I love in science fiction - awe and fear -, and is about a theme I find irresistible: trying to make sense of the unknown (it plays a lot like a twisted, R-rated Star Trek episode). It is also a film about rebellion against authority (specifically of "children" disallowing their "parents"), if one pays attention to the interpersonal relationships of the characters, which is something I can relate to as well. The look of the film is formidable, the music transports me to a realm of (dangerous) cosmic discovery and there are characters I find fascinating (David, Shaw and the Engineers). If you put a gun to my head and force me to find an imperfection in it, I'd point out the fact that Lindelof didn't really need to kill Vickers and Janek. What a waste of two people who could've been further developed in a sequel. All the other usual complaints I either disagree with completely or am not bothered by them at all. I don't know why people act baffled as to the hate Prometheus gets when the problems people have with it are so well outlined and explained constantly. The script has massive issues with character motivation/behavior and plot structure, plus they cut out a lot of the plot. You either care or you don't. The end.

My only real beef with it was that some of the supporting characters were either boring or just annoying as ****. I can't stand Fifield. He thinks he's so edgy because of his tattoos and his shitty hair. |
