I think Ridley Scott needs to bring the series back to its original purpose and pace, and that was to allow your mind to take over and scare the crap out of you rather than have a bunch of roaches running around killing people. But that's another discussion.

Based on the trailer and nothing more (I did not read the leaked script or anything), here's my take based on the images in the preview:
Some ancient version of man used Xenomorph technology/DNA to grow super-strong ships. That was the original purpose of having the ingredients to make Xenomorphs on board (which later wreak havoc in the other Alien films). They never intended to grow the 9 foot tall monsters, and never did. Rather, ancient man used elements of the Xenomorph biology to make the U-shaped ship strong, and even to make the skin-tight "space suit" which you can see the bald-man wearing as he approaches the Space Jockey area. Additionally you can even see some pink "brains" in some floor areas of the Space Jockey area. The ship was grown, or grown around a frame anyway. So, in ancient times, man was able to explore the universe because he'd found a strong natural resource and used it to make everything tough. The presence of a big human head in what we previously thought of as an alien ship is therefore not surprising at all. It was a human ship. (Or maybe the alien head is on the planet, post-crash. That is just as likely. In any case, the ancients saved their cannisters of DNA materials and died out). Tough as these ancients were, they were not tough enough. We see that one of these ancient ships explodes, the U shape part of it crashes on a planet's surface, and presumably everyone is killed or dies off. Perhaps some other part of the ship does not crash, and slowly flies on autopilot back to Earth (the shot of a saucer-like ship over what looks like Niagara Falls), arriving in the film's present-day and prompting the expedition to the planet where the rest of the ship crashed. I suspect the plot will then be that when the modern humans go out to find the U shaped part of ship, and start exploring it, the empty ship makes an effort to convert these people into new crewmembers. (Evidence: the many shots of the modern people's skin looking weird, and one jumping from an impossible height seemingly losing his hair -- I presume one of them becomes the bald man with impossubly thick neck-muscles shown approaching the Space Jockey area). Naturally, the people would rather NOT be turned into the new crew, and all hell breaks loose as they resist. Some added scares when the crew opens various cannisters of alien biological material... we can surmise that at the end of the film, the failure to work with this material in an informed way enables a Xenomorph or at least a Xenomorph face-hugger to grow and prevent the ancient ship from taking off (or prevent it from reaching its destination, anyway). |

Either way, my interest for this movie had nothing to do with the fact that it is an Alien prequel. I just find the whole concept intriguing, prequel or not. |
