I'm really curious what's happening to Dr. Shaw. From the look of the trailer, it looks as if
[Show spoiler]she's become "infected" in some way and has something growing from the inside...similar to Kane in Alien

I thought the same thing.
[Show spoiler]It'd be an odd choice to have that happen to the star of the movie, but we'll see I guess.

It doesn't mean that there wasn't a person in the suit who has his chest busted open and ripped through the suit. It is possible if the suit wasn't exactly made of metal. There is a certain amount of force that an alien has to exert and it might have used more force compared to a human's chestburster which would account for being able to rip through a suit. About the appearance of the Space Jockey, he could just not be wearing a helmet or the helmet came off.

I am looking forward to the movie and it does look like
[Show spoiler] Dr. Shaw is either infected with a virus or maybe a parasite.

Seems to me that he's doing a nasty bit of retconning on that in order to fit the new storyline.

Here's the Space Jockey's chestburster exit wound in Alien:

No way is that a suit - those are obviously bones.

AND the Space Jockey in Alien has eye sockets AND teeth:

From what we saw in Alien, that is NOT a suit.

But now Scott says it is, so he's hacking around with the assumed history of Alien.

That p*sses me off. From other forums on the 'net it appears to have annoyed many other fans too.

Erich von Daniken's hypothesis that mankind was created by aliens, who were seen as gods amongst ancient civilizations.

In von Daniken's 1968 book 'Chariots of the Gods', he explains his idea of how humans saw alien visitors as gods because of their advanced technology, which the ancient human civilizations believed to be supernatural powers. Therefore these aliens must be gods, and according to van Daniken this belief is the basis of religion.

Also, Ridley Scott has pointed out that Prometheus is about "gods and engineers" and that the name Prometheus is not just coincidence.

In Greek mythology, the Titan Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus were given permission by the gods to create life on Earth.

Prometheus created man from water and clay, and the goddess of wisdom, Athena, breathed a soul into man. Epimetheus created all the other creatures on Earth and gave them all the good qualities, so Prometheus made man stand upright like the gods to make them more superior.

We all know Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to the humans, but Prometheus also gave humans science, maths, medicine and arts, the foundations for modern civilization - a mind of their own, uncontrolled by the gods, free will.

Before Prometheus' revelations to humans they had lived in a state of timeless harmony, a counter-image of civilization.

In a similar story from The Bible, we hear of Adam and Eve living in a state of timeless harmony and ignorance, until they crossed God by eating from the tree of Knowledge.

This place was called 'Paradise', which also was the working title for 'Prometheus'.
A coincidence?

I read Chariots of the Gods many years ago & it was a very interesting book!

Of course, this is just the trailers - the actual movie release might well be different (ie blood will be red, etc).

I hate to be a downer but these "twists" in Prometheus are what's making VERY leary of the movie. it looks like Ridley may be making another Robin Hood and not another Blade Runner here . It's just totally crapping on the simplistic sci-fi horror of the Alien franchise and turning it into a whole jumbled sci-fi mess

That guy that says "From who?" looks like Christian Bale. The skinny version from The Fighter. How can the planet be totally uncivilized if the ground is opening up and showing what looks like iron doors with metal spikes? Heck, lets just watch the film, then we can all get some answers. BTW, I attended that Live Q&A with Ridley Scott at the AMC at Downtown Disney, and I'm just a casual movie-goer, so it wasn't just for VIP's. We got to see the new trailer before and after the q&a. We all got 3D glasses to watch it, along with Prometheus posters! It leap frogged ahead of The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises for most anticipated film of 2012!

Scott has said multiple times that we aren't going to see the xenomorph in the film, so
[Show spoiler] if that is the same ship from Alien, then you will need to establish it's threat by showing it's cargo of xenomorph pods!
Sorry, but i just don't get it. I'm not buying that the ship is the same and the planet is LV426. if that is the case, you might as well state we have seen the entire story in the very first trailer!

Guys, please bear in mind that in the UK we have 3 ratings for post-PG films, namely the 12A rating (same as the PG13) but also the 15 rating plus 18 rating. Scott may have convinced Fox that Prometheus is likely to get a 15 rating in the UK rather than 18 (Alien is now rated 15) and to go that route for his native country.

I read that the AMC event was invitation only, which is why I went to the Wondercon event instead a few hours earlier. Was that true? If so, how did you get an invitation? Did they hand out the lenticular 3D movie poster and Weyland Corp business card there?

If you read the Weylandindustries timeline

[Show spoiler] Based on recent classified findings by Weyland researchers, the company determines the exact coordinates of a new destination for long-time pet project: Project Prometheus. New round of investment is immediately opened and mission planning enters full-swing.
January 1, 2073

Discovery of Archeron LV-426
Weyland astronomers discover multiple moons and a ringed planet just outside the Zeta 2 Reticula System, which are possibly able to support life. Weyland expects to travel there within the century.
May 14, 2039

As you noted, they have the exact coordinates (from the trailer). Prometheus lands right on the access road in front of the walled area. (from the trailer).

Also, if that's the same ship that crashes, how come the crew in Alien never found that room with the huge human head statue? Seeing as how Scott said "the last 8 minutes ties into Alien" (or something to that effect), did they just show the end of the movie in the trailer?

ALIEN doesn't start from there though. The Last 8 minutes could be all to do with Ash and his assignment or something like that.

Not too mention that the time on the Ship in ALIEN is cut short due to the face crawler incident, otherwise they may well have found it.

There was a pretty bad storm during the opening of Alien, and the derelict ship was visible from the surface, assuming that the ruins are somewhat concealed, they would only have the distress beacon as a guide. All hell breaks loose after Kane comes back infected by the facehugger, so the Nostromo crew is only trying to survive at this point.

In the O'bannon Alien script, the eggs were found in a pyramid close to the derelict ship, not in the hold. Giger had done extensive work for that scene, but it was ultimately cut for reasons of cost. There is a ton of info and images on the internet and on the archive disc in the Alien Anthology to support this. If you search this and/or the Alien Antholgy thread you can find links to this data.

So, it seems that Ridley has included some of those elements in Prometheus.
Ergo, it fits that the crash site of the Alien ship would be near the walled area and the pyramid/monolith. It doesn't answer the question: Why was it not found by the colonists in Aliens. Conclusion: Aliens in not canon.

As someone said earlier, it is plausible that with the Kane infection, there was no time for further exploration of the area. The geothermal activity which caused the change in the landscape, could also have masked the pyramid from view or obliterated it completely.

Regarding the apparent difference in the atmosphere on the planet. There is no difference. It is predominantly methane, hence the use of suits and helmets in both Prometheus and Alien. Cloud cover is clearly visible on the approach shots of the Nostromo drop ship to LV-426. The surface of the planet depicted in both Prometheus and Alien are completely barren. Thats why they shot scenes in Iceland.

They did a similar thing with the Harry Potter films, I think the MPAA have a few problems with the sight of blood in a trailer.

Don't forget that some PG-13 films get 15's in the UK. Also, is Alien now rated a 15? My blu-ray Anthology has it as an 18

Not really sure why it would be an 18 today. Isn't exactly anything bad in it. No nudity, Language is moderate at most and it isn't even that gory.
