Why did Disney have to make a special deal with IMAX to put out their movies with the expanded aspect ratio?

Other studios have been doing this for years, going all the way back to 2008 with The Dark Knight. More recently, Tenet, Wonder Woman 84, and the BvS IMAX remaster have all included aspect ratio switching. No "IMAX Enhanced" version necessary.
Disney Plus Day: November 12th, 2021

Disney is celebrating it's 2nd anniversary of Disney+. The are making a very big deal out of this. $2 for a month of Disney+ for new and returning subcribers. Shang-chi and the legend of the ten rings along with Jungle Cruise drop on Disney+ on the 12th. And now they are adding 13 Marvel movies in IMAX Enhanced aspect ratio (1.90) which are only available today in 2.39.

They also have a deal with AMC Movie Theaters to show 4 surprise Disney movies for $5 (plus tax). From November 12th through November 14th, more than 200 AMC Theatres locations across the country

Let's go back to when you all said Disney won't release live action or Fox titles.
IMAX Enhanced 4K BDs support HDR10+ only or has that changed?

The IMAX Enhanced Marvel titles will either be in HDR10 or Dolby Vision.

Disney's number one priority is growing the subscriber count for Disney+. I don't see where putting these Disney+ exclusives on disc helps Disney to accomplish that. Do you? And you can forget the "Disney follows the money" BS cause Disney doesn't release 3D BDs any more.

You answered your own befuddlement. Disney made the deal to announce the partnership which was made to make an announcement.

Disney want positive headlines. Folks think IMAX is a big deal, IMAX think IMAX Enhanced is a big deal, it will get people talking.

Releasing discs has zero affect on Disney+ subscriptions. I think folks are perfectly happy to subscribe and buy physical media if they're currently doing so. You just have look at the number of subscribers here that would (and are) happily buying BDs and UHDs. And you can say we're a bubble example, but unfortunately we are the bubble.

Disney could have reasonably limited runs of The Mandalorian or Loki on disc and they'd sell out. They could even bring back the dreaded Vault.

Worse, going to Best Buy in the early 2000s (pre-Blu) and noticing they're using DVDs on their new widescreen HDTVs. In 4x3 mode. And skeptical when I point it out. "It's a widescreen DVD, it's supposed to be that way." Nooo, not stretched out! And trying to explain how their 1.85 (1.78) DVDs will now fill the screen with no black bars. Jeez.

You wrote it elegantly...

You could have simply written: "Disney doesn't give a **** about physical media anymore...

And they shut down 100 TV channels worlwide for the same reason: they only care about Disney+

It's either HDR10 at minimum or 10+ (optional). There's a metadata squirt in the video that triggers the IE mode on supported displays/projectors. The DTS track is flagged as IE as well for supported decoders.

The 13 titles available in the Imax-enhanced format include the Disney Plus premiere of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings.” on Nov. 12. The others are “Iron Man,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Doctor Strange,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Black Panther,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” “Captain Marvel,” “Avengers: Endgame” and “Black Widow.” (According to Disney, the availability of some titles will vary by market.)

Imax’s Expanded Aspect Ratio is 1.90:1, which means that during certain scenes “more of the action is visible on screen, just as the filmmakers intended,” the company said. Imax provided a graphic showing the expanded picture as it will appear on Disney Plus (with the portions above and below the blue lines representing the Imax enhancement):

I'm sure it isn't as it is not mentioned in any of the articles. It's all about the 13 "IMAX Ratio" Scenes 4K HDR Marvel movies

iTunes/MA video bit rate 24.73 Mbps (not far off from the disc) and both look fine to me besides a tiny bit of edge enhancement or sharpening whatever the pros call.

I'll check out some of this and see how it compares to the discs.

Until Fiber Optic internet is available where I live the discs are always my first choice.

Well, it's evident that they have put physical media on the back burner because they are not selling their Disney+ SW or MCU series on disc. You want to watch them - be a Disney+ subcriber.

Disney+ like all streamers has an enemy: Churn. Keeping their TV series on Disney+ will help to cut that down. And of course adding new content each month.

The pot of gold at the end of the streaming rainbow is massive, to the tune of $30 billion a year. Disney's current yearly revenue is a shade over $65 billion.
