I also wonder if these will be an alternate version, and you can choose between both. Original aspect ratio with Dolby Vision+Atmos vs. open matte with HDR10+ and DTS:X.

1.90:1 I would imagine they mastered right from the IMAX dcp's

AFAIK, no HDR10+. The DTS:X will not be there when they premier. Only Dolby Atmos. DTS:X comes later.

I would have agreed with this in the past until I watched the new IMAX transfer of BvS. I loved seeing the full image 1.44 image on those scenes, and in retrospect it made me wish Nolan kept the full framing on his films too, instead of cropping them to 16:9.

But the option to retain a standard 2.4:1 scope framing should always be available, because I understand the problem for CIH home-theater enthusiasts or people that just don't like the aspect-ratio switching around.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but does anyone know if this is exclusive to IMAX Enhanced TVs/Receivers or will it work on anything like an Apple TV 4K, maybe even with a toggle switch like The Simpsons has so you can go between 4:3 and 16:9.

But IMAX had two DCPs AFAIK: 4k laser had some 1.43 scenes (According to Chloe, I don't have a laser near me to see for myself), and the 2k Xenon had 1.9.

Any TV will be able to see it. FandangoNow had these IMAX Enhanced versions before they folded it into Vudu, and my TV played them just fine.

We don't know yet if it will be a choice like the Simpsons or if they are just replacing the current versions. Hopefully it will be a choice for both.

This is a major step for content that was locked out of homes, finally coming home

I'm happy these films are finally available to watch in these formats, but it does seem like another significant step in the direction away from physical media. The question of obsolescence in your purchase of a disc used to just be about a format upgrade 10 years later (DVD to blu-ray, blu-ray to 4k, etc), but now it's a matter of streaming getting incremental upgrades every couple years.

I was just considering getting some MCU discs on 4k, but now there's no point because I'm paying to have less of the movie.

A happy medium of digital vs. physical I could get behind would be if a service like Steam existed for movies where you could download a blu-ray quality video file to play locally, but I doubt that will happen any time soon.

Agreed, Disney is basically telling people NOT to buy their movies on disc....

Hey if that's what they want, they got it. I will save a lot of money in the process and buy discs from Majors that actually care about physical media....

I'm truly baffled by today's announcement.

Why did Disney have to make a special deal with IMAX to put out their movies with the expanded aspect ratio?

Other studios have been doing this for years, going all the way back to 2008 with The Dark Knight. More recently, Tenet, Wonder Woman 84, and the BvS IMAX remaster have all included aspect ratio switching. No "IMAX Enhanced" version necessary.
