I think most modern sets display Apps at 1:1 pixel mapping.

I put it to full screen on my 1080p monitor and it filled the screen.

EDIT: Just to make sure I wasn't going crazy, I downloaded the trailer and opened it up in VLC. Sure enough, no black bars during the IMAX sections.

Scope to 1.44:1 and back would be lousy at home (letterboxing to windowboxing to letterboxing to windowboxing...). If they have to switch ratios, stick with 1.90:1 (center extract for us scope projection people) and scope. Otherwise, just keep it in scope for home viewing.

Depends on the set's features. Some have a native display option under the picture settings, which eliminates overscan and creates a 1:1 pixel map, which is really what you want.

Modern sets. Does that mean 4K TVs? Cause they only have a market penetration of 44%. The other 56% are older HDTVs.

Pillarboxing, not windowboxing (which is bars on all 4 sides like in the opening sequence of Enchanted).

They do this on the remastered Batman Vs. Superman 4K - pillarboxing to letterboxing and back again.

It certainly will tick off the CIH crowd. I remember the mad scramble to create accounts just to vote in that Sony survey whether to put the subtitles in the picture or the black bar. Someone from another site put out the call and people just started showing up and never to be heard from again. Annoying since they gamed the survey for a select few and not the usual Blu-ray.com membership as a whole.

My 1080p Sony XBR from 2007 had a 1:1 setting with no overscan.

[Show spoiler]

Sorry, my mistake. The video that I'm playing on the forum page as linked to by Mike has a 1.66 frame on my iPad, hence why I'm seeing small borders top and bottom which make it 1.78 (and look just like what 1.90 does in a 1.78 frame). No idea why it's doing that, but 'the more you know' etc etc.

I believe those were expanded throughout, and Force Awakens also had an IMAX sequence. Lion King had 1.43 sequences, but with the regular movie being 1.85, I don’t expect that to show on D+

I have a crappy Vizio from like 8 years ago, and it also has a 1:1 pixel map mode. It's not the default, but it is there. Frankly, I doubt any TV on sale today doesn't have a 1:1 mode.

And Joe and Jane Public know this?

I dare you to walk up to a stranger on the street and ask them if they set the overscan on their TV to zero.

Disney+ has 113 million subscribers. Care to take a guess as to how many are savey when it comes to setting up/calibrating their TV?

As long as that soap opera effect is turned on, they don't have a clue.

Right - that's why they haven't released The Mandalorian on physical media. Disnee does follow the money and the path leads to Disney+

What's baking my noodle is that these will have Dolby Vision as well?!? But what about all dat IMAX special sauce that goes into making the image so much betterer?
That is saved for the IMAX Enhanced 4K UHD Blu-rays - the best that movies can look.

And make sure you set the Sharpness Control to 100 caused you want the sharpest picture you can get!

I know Brad Bird's Tomorrowland and the live-action Beauty and the Beast had IMAX opened-up sequences.

Wonder Woman 1984 had opening and closing IMAX sequences which showed on HBO Max as 1.78 while the rest of the movie was 2.39.
