The Third Man has a restoration and it didn't go "back in print" through Criterion, anyway. And like RAN, it's a StudioCanal title.

I get what both of you are saying but it would be nice if Criterion could release their films with 2 discs: one for the film and the other for extras so that the film can use up all the space and look as good as it possibly can. The only thing that's stopping them is the cost of doing so.

Me too. I don't have a TV big enough to bring out the major shortcomings and I don't watch with the critical eye that I used to. Senior citizen vision takes care of that. Frankly, when I read the reviews on this site I avoid noting specific scenes or screenshots mentioned simply because I don't want to be looking for the problems talked about. Once I see it I'll always be looking for it.

![]() On a more serious note, on a properly calibrated set -- let's assume you are somewhere between 55'-80'+ -- it is virtually impossible to see anything that 200/300% blow-ups would bring up. This is why you are not seeing anything. And this is why all this nitpicking of blown-up screencaptures is so silly. Additionally, once you blow-up this much you are effectively destabilizing/collapsing the grain structure. Unless it is 1:1 digital replica, you would see density fluctuations and regardless of how well a disc is encoded you will find "issues". Lastly, contrary to what some people write, 4K upscaling DOES NOT expose more artifacts. It has the exact opposite effect. It actually "tightens up" the visuals. In other words, if you had a transfer where grain wasn't well distributed and resolved, the upscaling balances it quite well. Now, it all depends on what type of master was used to produce the release, so there are variables. An older transfer done on a Spirit will still reveal various limitations after it is upscaled. But recent/newer masters done on ARRI, Oxberry, and NorthLight scanners (etc.) would look absolutely amazing upscaled. Actually, even good DVDs can look quite impressive. Obviously, native 4K Blu-ray would be superior to the current crop of 1080p Blu-ray, but I can assure you that the likes of Criterion's Thief or Satyricon look really, really good upscaled. ![]() Have a great weekend, guys. They were definitely a huge inspiration for the Kill Bill movies...but better, since they're not so up their own bum in movie referencing.
I wonder if anyone can say if the 2K restorations referred to are the same that Arrow accessed for their release or newer. Last edited by ravenus; 10-17-2015 at 10:09 AM. |

Just finished watching Bitter Rice on Hulu a few hours ago and it was definitely worth the time. Silvana Mangano is like some sort of Italian Ingrid Bergman/Rita Hayworth hybrid. She has a few dance scenes that made me think of Rita's performances in Gilda. I also thought of A Streetcar Named Desire as I watched Bitter Rice since both films almost make you feel like you are suffering under the same oppressive heat as the characters.
Also, I would like to recommend this calendar by the National Film Registry to everyone. I have been buying this calendar for a few years now and at least 1 or 2 Criterion titles will be featured each year. Gilda is included for 2016: MoviePoster2016.jpg https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0789329972/ref=ox_sc_act_image_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX 0DER |

Looking at criterions releases of box sets, I think they are doing an amazing job with choosing them and making them worth buying.
Just in the last year or two there was the Pierre Etaix set, the Tati set, the Zotoichi set, Cassavetes, Jacques Demy, The BBS story, now The Apu Trilogy and Lady Snowblood sets coming soon. |

Ran, on the other hand, probably needs a restoration more than any other movie period, if we consider the movie's magnitude. If the current blu ray isn't a SD upscale, then it certainly isn't far off from being one. |
