So if I preorder something that comes out after the sale, will I get 50% off?

Someone on reddit contacted Criterion asking about a bunch of films and they responded saying that there are no current plans for The Other Side of the Wind to join to the collection and no current plans to bring back Peeping Tom. They also have no specific dates or news regarding the releases for Saint Omer, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Atlantics, and American Factory.

A few years back when I still followed the sale threads, it was possible to pre-order (in store only) the following month's releases and get the 50% off, but only if they had been put in the system. I've no idea if that is still possible though.

I know they licensed it, maybe as part of a package, but I wonder if they view The Other Side of the Wind as illegitimate since Welles didn't finish it. I know a few Welles scholars have questioned the finished product. Rosenbaum, who was involved, has questioned an anti-Hollywood film like this being finished by Hollywood.

Got Moonage daydream 4k in and it's scratched to hell. I don't get it. This is getting ridiculous. Out of probably 50 criterions I've purchased this year, at least a third have had scratches or blemishes.

Freddy’s side hustle, give the man a break.

QC and QA are non existent in the blu ray packaging business.

I have never had a scratched disc that affected playback. I feel like I’m being gaslit sometimes for how often I see this come up on these forums.

For me it's not even about affecting playback at the time of purchase but I've had DOZENS of Criterion's come with scratches like those above and I have replaced and exchanged all of them. Even if it doesn't affect playback now the scratches could later on, plus a new disc shouldn't be coming looking like it was at war with a fork. Criterion is a great company but this has been an active issue for months to the point that when a new release comes out there's a 50/50 chance I'll have to return it because of scratches, and they're not little either they always are in pairs and at least an inch minimum.

Please note it was quite difficult to capture the full and additional scratches.

You're never going to get a clear answer because it depends on multiple factors (reg vs. uhd Blu-rays, circular vs. line scratches, how deep, etc.). Typically, scratches don't impact play often, but that's not the point when people are spending their hard-earned money on new physical media. If I wanted to buy scratched discs, I'd buy them used on eBay.

From my experience, I only ran into three discs of Blu-rays that had scratches from the factory, giving me playback issues. This is a rare occurrence, but I exchange them for peace of mind. However, on 4k, more often than not, I have to get them replaced. For example, I already had to reach out to Disney 3 times this year to replace my Avatar 1, 2, and Quantumania 4k UHD discs because they were badly scratched and impacted play.

You don't HAVE to return it if the scratches are just superficial.

I agree most scratches don't cause issues but I've had at least 3 that did. Sometimes I have playback issues on scratch free discs. Combination of bad QC and overly sensitive players I guess.

I personally have never payed too much attention to scratched blus. They play just fine for me. I just infer that these companies are aware of the issue, but they still send those disks into the world. They don't really see it as a big deal. I'm sure if it really was having an impact on playback, they would be flooded with returns, and this would affect the bottom line. I get not wanting to leave the car lot with a dented Mustang, but I"m sure the scratch question has already been asked and answered by QA.

I haven't had an issue with a scratched blu-ray in a long time but I can understand wanting to get a disc replaced.

You pay a bit extra for a CC disc so it's not unreasonable to expect the product to arrive in mint condition.

I saw the Janus contemporaries on Reddit, they come in the standard Criterion case with the Janus logo on the spine, no numbering.

I think they look good

Is that the Blu-ray disc or the 4K disc?

The Blu-ray disc in my After Hours 4K looks perfect, but it spits out after a few seconds.

Correct but the packaging is rather unique so maybe Criterion will make an exception?

Deadass, when the Coens do a Blu-ray or 4K it ends in disaster. Miller’s Crossing was an insult, and the constant changes to Blood Simple is the reason I’ve never seen the film.

The DP (Roger Deakins) did the Shout transfer for Fargo, and then Deakins came back to do the HDR and DV for the 4K, but other than that there’s been no work done on it. And TBL apparently has no edits either, so at least their big two movies (for me anyway) escaped the Coens’ tomfoolery.

For what CC is charging, they should be pressing discs overseas and not in Mexico.
