As several others have said, my biggest hopes for Criterion in 2024 are for more SD to HD upgrades. The biggest title on my list for years has been The Spirit of the Beehive, so hopefully that one finally happens this year. With Erice releasing a new movie and the subject of retrospectives, I imagine it has a fair chance of happening.
Many other notable titles in SD purgatory from Criterion: Grand Illusion Great Expectations Oliver Twist Henry V Hamlet The Unbearable Lightness of Being The Blood of a Poet Testament of Orpheus Pygmalion Alexander Nevsky Ivan the Terrible I Know Where I'm Going! Big Deal on Madonna Street Diary of a Chambermaid Carl Theodor Dreyer Box Set The Shop on Main Street Closely Watched Trains Spellbound Loves of a Blonde The Firemen's Ball The Importance of Being Earnest Red Beard À Nous la Liberté Man Bites Dog Trouble in Paradise Contempt Pépé le moko Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne The Adventures of Antoine Doinel Coup de grâce Quai des Orfèvres Il posto I fidanzati Diary of a Country Priest Stray Dog The Lower Depths Early Summer French Cancan Secret Honor The King of Kings Youth of the Beast Fighting Elegy Casque d'Or Touchez pas au grisbi Thieves' Highway Young Törless A Generation Kanal Divorce Italian Style Unfaithfully Yours The Browning Version Crazed Fruit Le notti bianche Boudu Saved from Drowning Samurai Rebellion Samurai Spy Sword of the Beast Kill! Shoot the Piano Player Ran Forbidden Games The Bad Sleep Well The Complete Mr. Arkadin The Children Are Watching Us La bête humaine Murmur of the Heart Lacombe, Lucien Viridiana A Canterbury Tale Hands over the City The Fallen Idol Corridors of Blood When a Woman Ascends the Stairs Fires on the Plain The Burmese Harp The Face of Another Les enfants terrible Cría cuervos ... The Threepenny Opera Drunken Angel This Sporting Life Death of a Cyclist The Thief of Bagdad Twenty-Four Eyes La ronde Le plaisir Le deuxième souffle Hobson's Choice That Hamilton Woman White Dog Apologies for the length of the list, but it's long for a reason. The point is they have a tremendous amount of titles that they only have available (if still in print) in SD. And yes, I am aware that many of these titles are or have been available on Blu-Ray or UHD from other labels, whether in this region or others, and in most cases I have them. In some cases other labels have the rights so upgrading is impossible. In some cases I'm sure there aren't sufficient materials for an HD upgrade. But there is still a lot of room to get more of these titles into HD. The truth is their efforts to upgrade SD titles have diminished since they began UHD, prioritizing HD to UHD upgrades. As others have suggested, I'm more likely to jump on an SD to HD/UHD upgrade than I am to jump on an HD to UHD upgrade. But at least they haven't entirely forgotten these titles. Peeping Tom is one upcoming title, even if it's only coming out after several of us already purchased the UK release. We're also (finally!) getting Floating Weeds back in print and in Region A, and The Devil and Daniel Webster, not to mention a wealth of Chantal Akerman titles. And LaserDisc upgrades of I Am Cuba and Trainspotting. Other still somewhat recent upgrades include Blast of Silence (another long-held want crossed off), The Red Balloon, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and Arsenic and Old Lace. I have to admit I'm often most excited for these SD upgrades when they make announcements and I always prioritize buying the ones that interest me. |

From what I can remember: Eyes Wide Shut had a 20th anniversary reissue done by Park Circus in collaboration with Warner Bros. International back in 2019. This version supposedly comes as a 4K DCP but I haven't been able to find anyone or any piece to confirm if this is true (The Park Circus trailer doesn't mention a new restoration at all). I've heard people mention about a 4K DCP but nothing to really clarify if this is actually a new restoration or if they were mistakenly given the older HD remaster. Mind you, this was one of the earliest Kubrick titles to get re-released alongside 2001, Shining, and Barry Lyndon. Anyways, there was a point where it was rumored to be getting a 4K UHD in late 2019 (then in 2020, then in 2022, and so it goes). This site's official announcement for this film actually stated a 4K UHD slated for that timeframe, which was what got me initially excited and waiting for one.
Clocking in 4.5 years later and if there was a 4K DCP, then there hasn't been any signs of the 4K UHD itself and 10 out of 13 of Kubrick's films have already been released on 4K UHD! The other remaining two are Barry Lyndon, which has a 4K restoration used for the Criterion Blu-ray, and Lolita, which much like Fear and Desire won't have a strong demand for a 4K. With the 25th anniversary coming in this year, I sincerely hope this will be the year that SOMEBODY (Can be from any company at this point because I genuinely do not care anymore) actually releases this on 4K UHD. 25th Anniversary. 4K UHD. Hopefully not another Blue Christmas. |

Multi-quote madness!!!
I just re-watched Happiness the other night for the first time in over twenty years, and holy moly is that movie dark. I remembered it was "messed up," but my blood just stopped cold at a couple points. Such a good movie, and definitely needs an upgrade, as the DVD looks pretty bad. Quote:
For many of us, part of the joy of ordering movies in any sale is closing the tab that has your order confirmation screen, and immediately logging into blu-ray.com to complain about how it hasn't shipped yet. After every sale order, I try to post shipping updates in all relevant threads daily until my packages arrive. Once my order comes I open it up, check the packaging for blemishes, check discs for scratches, and report back here. If a disc needs replaced, I continue to update the forums on a daily basis about the status of my situation. Once I have all of the films in my possession and undamaged, I put them on my shelf, take a picture for my various social media pages to see if I can get some hearts and thumbs-up, and I never watch them. In fact, I have only ever seen four movies in my lifetime, and three of them were in-flight movies where I simply couldn't avoid seeing at least some portion of the screen. |

[Show spoiler] . I thought, you made it through this whole film, and now at the end, it finally pushed you over the edge?! Not a film for everyone, but a great one nonetheless. It's one of the last DVDs I watch that isn't enhanced for widescreen TVs and is letterboxed with curtains on the sides. Like watching a postage stamp in middle of the screen!
