It Happened One Night is pretty much the original romantic comedy. It is a great movie. La Piscine is a fun French thriller if you like to see sexy people lounging by the pool with some thriller thrown in for good measure.

I'm not a Criterion Channel subscriber, but I subscribe to their e-mails and usually get notice and $10 the night before.

Also, there is a new 4k restoration of A MAN AND A WOMAN opening at NYC's Film Forum. Is it supposed to be coming from Criterion at some point?

I think a couple of others as well.
As someone else who recently had a pretty bad health scare, better they get done right then come out horrible.

In May 2023 I nearly died from a kidney infection that had my left kidney and everything from my stomach down throbbing. Little did I know that by the time The Exorcist dropped that September, the kidney infection would go down as only the second-biggest pain in my ass that year. -_-

Better it get done right by someone competent, than get done fast by someone who knows jack about properly restoring a film.

For the most part Criterion does most things right in terms of their releases. What they do "wrong" is release a ton of films that already have a good physical release in HD already. I want to see more new to HD films from their library of hundreds. Time is a ticking in more ways than one.

I probably won't get all of those though--have to save something for the July Barnes & Noble sale.
Before buying Scarface, I suggest you read the reviews of the Universal Blu-ray, Criterion Blu-ray, and Criterion 4K. It's major elements issues, not anything on the part of Universal (who did the entire restoration themselves) or Criterion (who literally just did the disc and not the transfer), but it is honestly one of Criterion's weaker discs and one of the weaker 4Ks out there.

It's not a deal-breaker for me, but the picture quality is such a massive step down from what we expect that I can't just not mention it.

What time do the sales normally start?

Duke/Shane: I’m sorry to hear about your health scares. I’ve had my fair share in the past few years myself. I hope things are better, and continue to be better for you both!

I think the titles I'd support them redoing are...

-Anything Japanese
-A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket (I want them mono tracks restored)
-Black Narcissus (transfer looks ancient)
-Querelle (rather poor HD transfer from the 2000s, great movie, but I regret buying it due to the PQ)
-The Magnificent Ambersons (include the goodies from the laserdisc)
-Brazil
-Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut (we all know Criterion has them, and the latter's actual director's cut has never been released)
-A title where there is a Blu-ray or 4K, but said disc is either ancient, poor, or both
-Anything from Disney/Fox/Touchstone/Hollywood/Buena Vista

I get it's controversial, but if Criterion comes along and fixes major issues with a prior release, then it makes it acceptable for me. If they redid, for example, A Nightmare On Elm Street, a film that yes it's important in cinema history, but the 4K we have is solid, then I'd be more inclined to say "eh, this wasn't necessary".

And if you're building a cart, build it in a document, or in multiple tabs, since Criterion clears all shopping carts when the sale begins. (Which is good, or the few nutcases among us would likely clean Criterion out.)

I just put the titles I want in my wishlist. It’s easy enough to transfer them to my shopping cart once the sale starts.

Same here. I'm usually ordered and done within a 2-3 minutes after the sale starts and I continue on with my work day.

Default Just a wish

One of my favorite actors is Randolph Scott. Criterion's 4K/BD set of Ranown Westerns is exemplary. I wish Criterion would cap that with Seven Men from Now. Maybe they could sort out the Paramount/Batjac impasse -- that would be most welcome.

I would recommend to Criterion, consider a release of The Walking Hills (John Sturges, Columbia, 1949). This low-key contemporary western is intriguing and bears up well to repeated viewings. Scott is perfect in his role. The cast, crew, story make this a really fine film. Cinematography is exemplary. The incomparable Josh White is fabulous. It has yet to be seen on Blu-ray. The TCM DVD is decent but leaves much room for improvement. It would be a welcome title in the Criterion Collection.

You'd do it Randolph Scott.

And, if you want to see it on the BIG screen, it's featured in this year's Locarno Film Festival. Switzerland. Book your flight and hotel now. I'd walk if it wasn't for all that water.

On the day of the last sale (it starts at 5 PM UK time) the public transport services I used had both done the usual fail and left me stuck at a bus stop for an hour. I discovered that it was very easy to make the order from my phone using my wishlist - it hardly took any time!

There's something satisfying about buying $100+ of Criterion UHDs while standing by the road

[Show spoiler]

As much as I want the Batjac impasse resolved, I'd give all of the Batjac titles just to have The Alamo and The Greatest Story Ever Told restored. The Batjac titles at least have a chance on their own. The other two, for multiple reasons, London After Midnight has a better chance of getting restored and released than The Alamo and TGSET do.

So naturally, I'm hoping for a miracle...still.

DEMONLOVER is a 2K master so it would only be BD.

Bound 4K - $19.99

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid 4K - $29.11

Farewell My Concubine 4K - $23.11 (it was even lower a couple days back, but this si still 53% off)

Just noticed this is OOP on the Criterion site:

I like to think that this would mean a Blu-ray is coming, but I doubt it.
