Can I just say that RIPD is one of the worst titles for a movie ever? Just talking about it in the Criterion thread makes me feel dirty.

And I agree with Grug. Films and movies are two different things.

I recently realized how much I love gangster films. Goodfellas, The Godfather and A Bronx Tale are some of my favorites. Maybe it's the Italian in me.
I strongly reccomend seeing Body Double, Femme Fatale and possibly The Fury afterwards.

For me, the bottom of the barrel in his filmosgraphy is Casualties of War. Everything rang pretty false.

Raising Cain is low on the list as well;
[Show spoiler]however, the last shot is chilling.

I just finished watching The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, and I loved it. This is one of those Criterion titles that my eyes have glazed over in the past, because I always dismissed it as a stuffy British snorefest. Thankfully, my viewing of Black Narcissus, my first Powell/Pressburger film experience, compelled me to take an interest in this title at long last.

I'll write a more extensive review tomorrow when I'm awake, but, for now, I'm in love with the Technicolor look of this film, with the dynamics of the British/German friendship, and with Deborah Kerr.

Interestingly enough, though, Winston Churchill wanted to stop this film. If I still had my old DVD of That Hamilton Woman, reportedly Churchill's favorite film, I'd be compelled to watch it right now just to set things right with Churchill before I call it a night. I'm hoping that That Hamilton Woman will see a Blu-ray upgrade someday.

I think I'm going to add something to my signature about films vs. movies.

Fantastic! I am happy to hear that.

The Red Shoes is wonderful too.

I have to agree. I let go of my DVD during Best Buy's Upgrade and Save program.

I'm still baffled that it made J. Hoberman's top ten of 1992.

I use the two words interchangeably, to be honest. More often than not, I'll switch the words simply for the purpose of not being too repetitive in one single sentence.

People on this site have called me out on this before, but I also use the word, "flick", especially if I'm making a casual mention of a film.

It will say Second Printing on the Second or Third Disc, I believe.

Yeah, I see no distinction. Just because a film deals with serious subject matter doesn't instantly make it better than a "genre film".

How about one that is really thought provoking, yet a genre film at its core: the magnificent Strange Days?

They need to give you access to the database here so you can add the distinction and go to town
