However, keep in mind that the film was occurring at a time when Civil Rights were becoming an important aspect in the world. It was also very rare to see an interracial relationship at this specific time.

Overall, I think it was a very well-made and well-acted film without the film itself or the characters in the film, for that matter, coming across as biased.
Very much a film of it's time that's a bit too polished and sentimental perhaps but Hollywood was taking baby steps with a very difficult issue. I'd like to think we've made great strides in this area but some nasty reaction to the recent Cheerios commercial showing an inter-racial couple says otherwise. That said-Spencer Tracy is my favorite actor and that final scene where he talks about his relationship with Katharine Hepburn's character has so much real life truth in it that I always tear up.

You should see the Coke Commercial reaction, it's getting blasted from a lot of angles.

My favorite Spencer Tracy film, Bad Day at Black Rock is long overdue for a BD release but it'll probably never happen.

Sidney Poitier and Spencer Tracy are two phenomenal actors.
I want a Blu-ray release of The Defiant Ones, starring Sidney Poitier. If Criterion wanted to follow It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World with another Stanley Kramer movie, I would love for them to pick up The Defiant Ones as a title.

Bad Day at Black Rock is a great flick. I'm also keeping my eyes out for a hopeful Blu-ray release.

Agreed. The scene at the gas station with him and Robert Ryan is an example of two great actors making something memorable out of a simple conversation. It's also a textbook example of an old pro stealing a scene by doing nothing more than sitting down.

Yep, too few Tracy films out on Blu-ray.

A crippled Spencer Tracy fighting Lee Marvin (The ultimate movie bad ass), Robert Ryan and Ernest Borgnine against a backdrop of extreme xenophobia? Cinema gold.

I really need to crack open the Controversial Classics Collection set I picked up a few months back. I put it aside and haven't gotten to any other movies in it yet. I had already seen, and owned a copy of Bad Day at Black Rock prior to buying it though, gave my original away when the set arrived.

You should, some great titles in that set. Fury, A Face in the Crowd, etc.

I'm thinking of picking up the Controversial Classics Collection next payday to fill in some gaps in my film noir collection. I'm not sure if Fury or I Am A Fugitive from the Chain Gang will see Blu-ray release anytime soon.

Yeah, I'm real curious to see the evil Andy Griffith. The bulk of my exposure being his TV shows (The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock) it'll be interesting to see him as a dirt bag.

It did a real on me the first time I saw it with just the Andy Griffith show under my belt as a reference. I later saw some of those Made-for-TV movies like Savages (a Most Dangerous Game variation) that he made in the '70s that also tapped into that evil Andy persona. Prepared to be amazed!

I like Hard Eight, but I would hardly call it brilliant. It's a fun watch, but I think it relies too much on the style that had recently been popularized by Tarantino. Still, I would like it in the collection, but I think Punch-Drunk Love should be more of a priority.

I doubt they will but you know what happens when we buy DVDs.

I apologize since this has probably been mentioned before, but do Criterion offer to replace inserts and/or booklets if they get damaged for a fee for us outside the US?

It wouldn't be PTA's Criterion debut, I'm afraid. They released Boogie Nights on laserdisc back in 1998.

I wouldn't say that (that it'll probably never happen, not that it's long overdue for a BD release).

On edit: By the way, Bad Day at Black Rock was a Criterion laserdisc.

Looks like Ill be calling sick tomorrow as I fear I picked up the flu. I will ask my wife to pass by B&N after dropping off my son at school and get me either Tokyo Story or Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion. Some chicken soup and a good movie...that is what I need .

If anybody is looking for a good food centered movie to pair with Babbette's Feast, look no further than Big Night. It's absolutely wonderful.

BIG NIGHT is a fun film, but I think MOSTLY MARTHA is even better in the food genre. Unfortunately it's only on DVD and not Blu-ray, but its moderately entertaining American remake (NO RESERVATIONS) is available on an okay-looking Blu-ray. Then of course, there's TAMPOPO, but that's not available on a U.S. Blu-ray. For something a bit more off-beat on a very nice-looking Blu-ray, there's also A WOMAN, A GUN, AND A NOODLE SHOP, which is actually a rather crazy Chinese remake of the Coen brothers' BLOOD SIMPLE.
