I’ve been paranoid about that title for almost five years now. My copy still works perfectly fine after all those years, but I’m hoping Criterion reissues it soon.

I’ve heard, though, that they can replace that title in spite of its OOP status.

Thank you. I’d been looking at the MoC release, more recently thinking the decency police would get it pulled because of the plot. Turns out Paramount is just going to seal off other releases. I’ve got a copy on the way. ❤️ Eureka for still having free shipping. I hate to do it for one film, but $19.61 isn’t a bad price.

Now to work on the others.

They can hold extra copies just to use as replacements for defective discs. How many I’m not sure, but since the purchase was made before the license expired, there’s no issue. It’s not another cash transaction.

Yeah, I'd say your shipper added the value. Because I've received at least -- no joke -- 1000 orders within the U.S. and not one shipper has ever put the value on the label or anywhere on the box. It simply isn't standard at all here within the U.S., from any shipping company I've dealt with. I'm also a seller of over 15,000 items and I've never put a value on any box I've shipped either.

What I don't understand is why Criterion won't ship internationally.
I mean fine, their releases are meant to be watched/sold in the US and Canada only because that is why they are region-locked, but legally only the sale has to happen there, they should not care where the item is shipped. Come on
I envy you guys being able to take advantage of 50% sales on all items.

You are forgetting that there are younger people, or people who are not yet movie buffs enough to know they will be interested in these titles, so the way I think, the market should still be there for those who in due time will come to desire those titles. You know what I mean?
For example, I had a newly-found interest for blind buys when TT went out of business, and the hysteria around them going out of business ignited an interest inside of me for movies I had never any interest in, simply because there were multiple factors that made me want to buy them (Fox titles that will never be reissued, crime movies I had never been interested before). And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Once I bought up the dozens of titles, I moved on to Eureka and Indicator, where I bought up all titles I had a remote interest in.
But I could afford it. Even then, there were already some titles that were OOP, because others wanted them, but clearly also because scalpers bought them up when they were in low numbers (scalper lurkers on here, or fans on here, or alerted by tweets and instagram posts).

Even now, there are titles I might enjoy, and would blind buy at retail price, but I can't because of the reasons above, so in the end it's my loss, for not maturing fast enough to know I'd want them, but also because of scalpers. So if someone says they are going to buy them up for scalping purposes, well, other posters have given already an appropriate response
Quoted for truth. It's one thing to prioritize your purchases over the span of 10 years, and quite another to catch up on an already vast catalogue with only a small budget at your disposal.

There are 40 titles on my Criterion wishlist, not counting future announcements and potential box sets, which I'm not considering yet. Some of them have been on the list for 2 years; that doesn't mean I don't want to own them. It was simply a matter of new discoveries being more exciting, and sometimes of circumstances (such as Amazon not price matching those titles during the B&N sale or not including them in the 2 for 25 or 3 for 30 offers in the UK). With Criterion, it was always a matter of "what I want to watch next" vs "what might be going OOP". There has been plenty of that lately with Eureka titles, Arrow and BFI booklets and other limited editions. Plus various titles from outside the boutique labels that I wanted to make sure I owned (such as the Czech release of The Good Soldier Svejk). It's certainly not easy.

If Criterion starts dropping titles the way Eureka did, I don't see myself being able to keep up. Luckily for me, I don't feel like I missed out on this batch, since I already have the UK release of Nashville and I'll be more than happy with a barebones Rosemary's Baby (I was always going to buy one of the European releases anyway). But I might have to bump up Ace in the Hole from low-mid priority to high, which is annoying, because there are already more films I'm dying to see than I can afford in the next batch, and I'll have to delay those even more.

Intriguingly Criterion have just started to release Fox titles in the UK. Until this year it was only the Tree of Life that had made it here, and obviously there are special circumstances to that. We wondered if it was Wes Anderson's deal that got Grand Budapest Hotel released, but Kagemusha is out here on Monday and there doesn't seem to be any exceptional circumstance that can be put on that, so it's possible Criterion still has some pull beyond your average licensee.

Just a FYI to anyone looking for Harold and Maude on blu-Ray. I called Movie Trading Company after checking their site. They had multiple used copies listed available for $21.99. The store closest to me in Plano, TX is temporarily closed due to storm damage after the blizzard that nailed the whole state. And the next closest store in Broken Arrow, OK had a copy, but it had been placed on hold. The guy there confirmed at least two unspoken for copies. I called the Fayetteville, AR store and got one. There should still be at least one copy yet available. Call your local store, and have the store manager look up the stock. They’ll give you the store location and telephone number. Ashley went and pulled my copy. Total with tax and shipping was $28.52.

I’ve bought at least 20 used blu-rays from them, including a number of Criterions, and they’ve all been in like new condition.

Good luck.

BTW, if you should grab that copy, you might just make a quick post to let everyone know so they’re not calling Anchorage, Alaska, or someplace. If you’re told that there are still copies (they are constantly getting inventory in), maybe share that, too.

Glad to be able to add something to my thread for a change! Amazon titles have been pretty bereft on disc of late.

It wouldn't make sense for Criterion to release it but somebody should when of course Fox put out the first one. Plus, I'm sure there's lots of deleted material or outtakes (I would guess Cohen is quite improvisational?)

I see I received a lot of reaction to my provocative action and posting about buying all the OOP Criterion at a local Barnes & Noble. Believe it or not, the cashier there smiled when she saw all the Criterions I was buying, and I even asked her if there were other people doing this and she said yes.

Do I regret anything I've done? Absolutely not.

I'll tell you the reasons.
  1. I might decide to return all of these titles and get a refund, especially the DVDs as I'm realizing that I made a compulsive purchase based on a whim.
  2. I'm curious to see what a first-time scalper feels like and as an experiment I want to see if I feel despicable after doing this. Hey, you only live once.
  3. I often enjoy the thrill of finding rare collectibles in the moment but later on I don't feel contentment anymore after my discovery. That goes back to point #1 of most likely returning the DVDs as I have no use for them.
  4. Being currently unemployed, getting $100 for a rare OOP title would help my living situation just a tad, at least paying off next month's utilities.

In terms of the cost of gas, I figured that was a sarcastic remark, as I basically spent $1-2 on the driving back and forth to the store which is hardly anything in my view.

Basically to sum up my post, I am most likely going to return the Criterion DVDs to the shop to let others have the opportunity to buy them as opposed to me trying to make money off of them online. The blu-rays I might keep though (one as a backup copy, and one to sell online). If anyone has a problem with that, sue me.

Fox/Disney doesn't own the sequel. If they did, it wouldn’t get a release. It makes perfect sense for Criterion to do it, it’s probably going to be an Oscar nominee.
