Is The Lady Vanishes suspected to go OOP? The Blu-ray is “currently unavailable” on Criterion’s website as well as on Amazon, where it’s going for astronomical prices.

There is currently nothing they anticipate going out of print in the near future, according to e-mail responses I and several others have gotten. If interested, I would e-mail them inquiring as to when it might be available again.

As for LGBT films in the Collection, there are also some of the Fassbinder films like The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant and Fox and His Friends.

If you not stuck on the label, these are some excellent LGBT films (Room in Rome is region B locked, but the UK BD of Stranger by the lake is region A compatible and, unlike the US disc, has lossless audio):

Stranger by the Lake is also incidentally on the Criterion Channel.

The 4 movie set this came in is OOP but that is literally just a cardboard box to house the 4 releases, which remain available individually but all seem to have been going in and out of availability since the box disappeared. As mentioned Criterion said nothing else was 'imminently' going OOP when questioned after the Paramount titles went.

I suspect it's just a close restock item after the Flash Sale 4 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure the slow re-supply from the Mexico Factory is still a problem. My original standalone disc suffered a Not Loading issues and I sent it in recently to be replaced. Luckily I also got the 4 in 1 box a few sales ago and that disc plays fine (and has different laser ID numbers) so likely originated at a different plant. I haven't heard back, but I wasn't expecting it for at least a month anyway

B&N has it for regular price and store stock about 1/3-1/2 the stores I scanned.

Deep Discount is backordered, but $23-26 depending on coupons.
Either I've not noticed this in the past or DD has added a line at checkout for backordered titles

" *Out of Stock: Expected delivery time 14-45 days. "

I decided to try to cancel the channel but after i select a reason it takes me to an empty box with an x in the upper right hand corner and doesn't do anything from there. Is the box suppose to say something or what

EDIT: looks like its canceled but I still don't know what the box was.

With the Paramounts now OOP and at a couple of them being on the problem list I figured I post this email I just got back. I know several folks have had concerns over the DiscRot issue.

I finally got around to sending my THE LADY VANISHES (original standalone, the boxset disc plays fine) back to Criterion 18 months after I noticed it wouldn't load and got an interesting followup email from Justin O. today with some updated information. I had used the prior instructions and just mailed the disc back to Criterion NY address with my name/address and short message like I did with Walkabout and Summer Hours. I did like that he had my prior information on hand and mentioned my prior discs. Also interesting he mention TLV being a problem disc though it's not on the longer list of those 2010 range items.

If this updated information on exchanges was previously posted, let me know and I'll delete it, but I couldn't find it here or in the Problem Disc thread.

My apologies to Criterion -- I jumped the gun on posting the entire contents of the original email. When you ask permission you should actually wait for the answer before assuming something is OK. New info added from follow-up message

Post redacted after a follow-up email though I will keep the generic part most of which was previously known,
Essentially they have changed the exchange program and may no longer require you to mail the discs to them first. Contact them at the below accts and they should lead you through the rest of the procedure

"
Discs are replaced on a rolling basis and we can typically send out replacements within 1-3 months.
---

We have confirmed that certain Blu-ray discs pressed at a replication facility that we used for a period in 2010 have become defective, showing a noticeable bronze discoloration on the underside and developing playback problems. We have confirmed the problem for select titles, but not on all copies of these titles. All of these titles have since been re-pressed at a different pressing plant, and the vast majority of discs in circulation should not be affected.

The confirmed potentially affected Blu-ray titles are:
8 1/2
Bigger than Life
For All Mankind
Gomorrah
In the Realm of the Senses
Kagemusha
Lola Montes
M
Monsoon Wedding
Monterey Pop
Paris, Texas
Revanche
Ride with the Devil
Sanjuro
Seventh Seal, The
Stagecoach
Summer Hours
Vivre sa Vie
Walkabout
Wings of Desire

Days of Heaven - out of print but affected discs are still being replaced
Howards End - out of print but affected discs are still being replaced
Le Cercle Rouge - out of print but affected discs are still being replaced
Pierrot le Fou - will send copy of latest release version unless you specifically request the previous OOP version

Not all runs of these discs were affected with the disc rot. If your disc is displaying discoloration and/or having playback issues, please report it. Replacements will be honored for the foreseeable future, so there's no rush to request a new copy if there's no apparent problem."

" we'd prefer people reach out to us individually about specific disc issues rather than emailing us en masse because of something they saw elsewhere. I hope you can understand our concerns, and appreciate you asking us about this first.

We don't mind if you share your experience here in these groups/forums, and that they should contact/email us here at orders@criterion.com (and Jon at mulvaney@criterion.com) for assistance with any faulty discs first (before mailing any discs to us) if that is at all helpful to you. "

I wonder if they will offer the Italian (director's) cut of Burn!? It's clearly the superior of the two, even if it means losing Brando's voice.

Are there any other titles pressed at Sony besides The Lady Vanishes and Le Cercle Rouge that are known to have problems? I know Solaris has been a problem title. As far as I know, the above master list only pertains to discs pressed at Sonopress. None of the Sony-pressed discs of those titles have been to known to have issues, have they? And also, Red Desert hasn't been known to have issues, has it?

If I'm remembering correctly, the last time they presented the US cut and I would expect it will be the US cut again.

I know there was that specific batch of Sonopress and a somewhat longer list of 'discs some people had trouble with" that I think were from different facilities and may not have been more isolated problems that entire print run issues..

It seems I ran across a mention of Red Desert in one post here or at HTF, but I didn't pay attention to the details
Actually looking at the Problem disc thread, it may have been your post I read -- ?? problems on a computer BD drive, but not a
standalone player. I couldn't find many other issues mentioned about Red Desert

For instance, Leviathan director Andrey Zvyagintsev did a Q&A at the Toronto Film Festival, and that's included as a blu-ray exclusive.

They have a really nice group of Best Foreign Film winners and nominees. I like them for contemporary foreign and domestic releases as a supplement to Criterion.

And it's not impossible for a film to get a Criterion release after being with SPC. Before Midnight was released by SPC before Criterion got distribution rights to the entire trilogy. So, that business relationship has at least been established on some level.
All About My Mother is also a SPC film. On that note, do only I find it bizarre SPC have never seen fit to release North American blu-rays of Talk to Her and Caché?

It is a near certainty that Criterion will be doing Talk to Her, as it was said by the person running SPC that Criterion would be doing most of Almodóvar's films.

I think a Criterion release of Caché is very possible too, but less certain than the Almodóvar titles.

Continuing the SPC thread, it's too bad Criterion passed on Antonioni's The Passenger, presumably because they weren't willing to release the rather dated master currently available. I'm guessing the SPC blu-ray has the same transfer as the Powerhouse Films release.

Is Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down the only Almodovar film to which SPC doesn't own the North American rights. High Heels was temporarily on the Channel a few months back and appears to have been theatrically distributed in the US by Miramax, but I don't know who owns it now. The SPC moniker didn't exist when Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown was initially released theatrically, but it looks like they acquired the rights later for a rerelease.
