Good looking month! I've owned both UHD's in multiple formats and will be buying them one more time. I've never seen the others, but I'm extremely interested - especially in The Celebration.

Oh, and that Piano cover is stunning!

I mean, Criterion often excludes commentaries.

Weary of so many contemporary titles. It’s tough because I like that these things are getting physical releases, but Criterion has so many and releases so few titles per month as it is.

Just The Celebration for me (clever cover design). I might upgrade The Piano in the distant future.

How long does it usually takes for criterion to be available on Amazon?

Not very long, but what’s the rush?

Once again, the foreknowledge of most of these titles coming (only Dick Johnson Is Dead wasn't already known for sure, and that title isn't at all surprising), and the fact that I just don't (or at least haven't) buy documentaries, lead to this being another pretty disappointing announcement for me in terms of enthusiasm. But I'll be very happy to get The Piano on 4K (maybe one of their best covers ever) and The Celebration. Rare that I'm only immediately interested in 40% of their titles from a month.

I'm fascinated by the cover for The Celebration... can someone please tell me why the cover looks like that I can't figure it out.

It's minimalist to be in line with the Dogme 95 movement. You can read a brief guide to it here:

https://www.movementsinfilm.com/dogme-95

Quote:
Together with Thomas Vinterberg, Trier had created a manifesto that deliberately mimicked Truffaut’s Une certaine tendance du cinema, the Cahiers du cinéma article that kickstarted the French New Wave in 1954. Within their manifesto, Trier and Vinterberg compiled a “Vow of Chastity”, in which they laid out the strict terms that would determine whether or not a film could be considered part of the Dogme 95 movement.
  1. Shooting must be performed on location, without providing props or sets that don't logically exist within that setting
  2. Diegetic sound only. Sounds must never be produced, such as music that does not exist within the scene
  3. All shots must be handheld. Movement, immobility and stability must be attained by hand
  4. The film must be in colour, with no special lighting. If there's not enough exposure, a single lamp may be attached to the camera
  5. There can be no optical work or lens filters
  6. No 'superficial' action (such as staged murders, elaborate stunts etc.)
  7. Geographical alienation is strictly forbidden, meaning the film must take place here and now
  8. No genre movies
  9. Academy 35mm is the only accepted film format
  10. Directors must not be credited

Hmm. Again I wonder what happened to Mr. Klein as StudioCanal mentioned it was coming in December in the US from Criterion. Hopefully in February along with Cure.

So when it comes to box sets, is it the number of discs or the number of movies that influence the final price?

Then you get the Marlon Riggs set, which has 7 movies, but 2 discs and priced at $49.99, the same price as any movie with 2 discs in the collection, so you can deduct that the number of discs influenced the price there.

Once Upon A Time in China set and the Bruce Lee set have 6 movies but 6 and 7 discs, respectively. Both priced at $124.99. So that seems like the number of films influenced the price there.

But the Melvin Van Peebles set has 5 movies, 5 discs, and is also $124.99.

Meanwhile, the Wong Kar Wai set is 7 movies and 7 discs but is priced at $199.99.

I did not care for The Celebration packaging design at first, but I'm having a "come to Yeezus" moment.

Still not 4K over here, so already have "A Hard Day's Night" on BD.

Definitely getting "The Piano". Masterpiece.

It’s a tragedy is what it is. We need to clean up 20th century masterpieces, not worry about some digital movie from the 21st century. Where’s Freaks, One False Move, The Girl Can’t Help It, Hard-Boiled, Chaplin’s First National movies?!?!?!
