Of course it is. They'd never dream of packaging one of their big collections the right way, like certain other labels.

Bet it takes up much more space per disc too.

to be fair, Arrow has made plenty of strange packaging decisions too.. the first HGL and Gamera editions are the two that come to mind immediately. The upcoming Shaw Brothers box is probably joining them...

How long have Amazon been 'slack' with blu releases, especially Criterion titles during the B+N sale period? This is the second sale in a row where most titles I've looking for are unavailable. Last time this happened, I missed out on ordering titles because they didn't replenish their stock.

Unfortunately, B+N still won't ship outside the US.

Although reading David M's comments on the fragility of UHDs does fill me with dread at the thought of this $60 disc in that packaging. Is this the first instance of a 4K disk being packaged that way?

Universal Monsters and Hitchcock collections are in slots. I display both but I'm keeping the actual UHD discs in a separate case. Blu-ray discs fair better but I'm cautious with the UHD discs since they seem so fragile.

It seems that any fancy packaging sucks, Criterion or not. Anything with a cardboard sleeve, as opposed to a plastic case that holds the disc, puts the disc(s) in harms way.

The Zatoichi box set (Blu-Ray plus DVD) looks really cool. But getting the discs out is a pain. I finally took all the Blu-Ray discs out and I store them in a separate binder, along with the M*A*S*H set. The M*A*S*H DVD binder also sucks.

With the said, the Bergman and Fellini sets are okay.

Getting the discs out of the Bergman set is super easy though. So easy that when I took it out of the slipbox four of them fell on the floor.

I've had zero problems getting my discs out of the Zatoichi set. The only slot based package that I've had trouble with was the Kubrick one from Warner. They are super tight.

I finally picked up the Godzilla box set yesterday. I am seriously happy to own this, and when I opened it up at home, I was oddly emotional about it.

I grew up watching Godzilla reruns on tv, and playing with the toys, so I have a strong fondness for the character. It feels great to have something that I'm not only nostalgic about, but that genuinely feels like a piece of film history.

I really liked the poster artwork, and wished I had the funds to buy another copy, just to take the posters out and frame them.

I'm busily backing up the discs to my HDD, as I am always concerned about sliding discs across cardboard, but overall, I love this set.

Which Zatoichi set do you have? The Blu-Ray and the DVD, or the Blu-Ray only?

Interesting. I had problems with mine. So I just store the BD's in a separate case.

I just tested every one of the slots out. There was one slot I hadn't accessed yet, and that one was a little tighter, so I had to tug a little more, but I got it out, and it comes out much easier now that the cardboard has been a little loosened. There is an easy way to take it out, at least for me. You basically put your index finger in the little groove above the disc, and your thumb in the disc hole, and you just slide it out. I just use one hand, and it slides out pretty easily this way.

edit: I am noticing the edges of the disc slot are getting frayed a bit from the constant removal of discs. Seems to be happening in the exaft same area with each one.

I never had a problem getting the discs out from a normal page. My problem was that the sleeves separated, and the disc would fall loose in the "page."

I've been looking forward to 11/15 because we're going to find out what Criterion has in store for UHDs outside of the first batch.
