The German release of Triangle of Sadness 4K will have HDR and Dolby Atmos. Probably best to pick the German release instead.

Really nice month. Since I already have BFI's Seventh Seal I'll probably not get this one, but I'm day 1 for Fisher King!!!

I wouldn't be so sure. The German disc will be released by Alamode Film who have had very bad video encoding in the past (see, e.g., Annette 4K UHD). Even with Criterion's mediocre to sub-par encoding, the Criterion disc might be better.

I guess we'll see when the reviews are out.

LOL, films by black directors about black people that is, they seemed to complain about them releasing films by black directors like Buck and the Preacher and One Night in Miami, claiming Criterion was going "woke" as a result.

I support them releasing more films by black directors, there are plenty I would love to see them release, such as the films of Haile Gerima.

Funny, I just saw this Sunday, such a great movie, I love Kore-eda. I wish they'd release Nobody Knows instead since that one doesn't have a Blu-ray in America.

The thinnest cardboard I've ever seen, almost paper thin. This will likely fall apart in a short period of time and I'll probably just end up throwing the box away and placing the individual digipaks on the shelf. Just a minor nitpick, actually - I'm very excited that two of these films have finally made the jump to 1080p HD. Not sure about the second film, Epidemic's home video history but I'm happy to discover it.
Is it kinda like the "Eclipse Sets"? That's a bummer to hear. Finally they don't try to reinvent the wheel for a film set, and they can't even do that right. My biggest peeve with Criterion.

Criterion is releasing Small Axe? This dude from dvdbeaver must be fuming right now

So many of Criterion's selections in 2022 seemed like they were driven by a non-cinematic agenda. It seems evident that many releases were based more by the race, gender and sexual orientation of the filmmaker, rather than by superlative artistic quality or the historical significance of the film.

I don't have any of the Eclipse sets but it's like the Beyond Terror set from Indicator/Powerhouse. Thin cardboard digipacks. I'm not a fan of those tbh. Frankly I was more surprised by the slipcase quality downgrade. I fear Criterion is beginning to cheapen out on packaging

Do you have a link for this?

LOL, this guy seems to think non-white, non-straight, non-male or non-European filmmakers don't make significant cinema.

Criterion have always been cheap when it comes to the outer boxes of their box sets…especially when compared to most other boutique labels these days. Have they gotten even cheaper with this release?!

That argument holds no water in this case, given how each of the Small Axe films are cinematic achievements of the highest order.

I can just move the Criterion's Blu-ray subs over to the BFI 4K if need be.

It’s like the BEFORE TRILOGY and APU TRILOGY boxsets

Oh, you have the tools. That's what I did. Had to change the timing of the subs from 23.976 to 24 frames.

I'm extremely happy to see this, as we only got a DVD release from the BBC in the UK. Not only that, but it has the New Cross docs on here as extras, so this is, in effect, the complete Steve McQueen at the BBC.

Not all of the films hit the bullseye, but overall it's a brilliant collection and Lovers Rock especially is mesmerising. Amazing that these went out on Sunday night primetime on BBC1.

Exactly. What needs upgrading are Criterion DVDs, not blu-rays. In my view, DVD to blu-ray upgrading is a higher priority than blu-ray to 4K blu-ray, especially if you can kill 2 birds with one stone upgrading the DVD to blu-ray AND 4k blu-ray.

That said, The Seventh Seal announcement is still welcome in one way since it implies there'll be more of a precedent for competing UHD editions of "arthouse" films, meaning going forward I may not have to rely so much on Criterion and their scratch-prone UHDs for 4K presentations of many of my favorite films, assuming films like L'Avventura and several Fellinis get 4K'd at some point.
Yes, this movie has an already excellent 4k region-free blu-ray release from BFI. It just feels redundant now. But when I make the switch to 4k (which I haven't yet), I'll probably upgrade some of my favorite films.
