I’d grab any of the remaining Malick titles they have if they released 4K upgrades of them.

Having a ready 4K restored master makes it easier for a UHD title than when you have to start from scratch with a fresh scan and restoration.

Oh yeah it's easier, and probably makes sense from a financial stand point, but still frustrating. They only release like 5 films a month and if 2 out of 5 are upgrades of films that recently got very nice BD releases it's slightly disheartening. I say bring back the Eclipse line or something of that nature. They have a lifetime of films that probably will never get releases otherwise.

It probably doesn’t just make sense financially, it’s likely the closest thing to pure profit and ensuring the long-term health of the organization they’ll ever have.

It’s also, IIRC, the exact strategy they employed with BD.

(I think the channel is their Eclipse line now, for better and worse. No, you can’t own the film, and that’s sad, but the selection is vastly greater and flexible. Like, there was never, ever gonna be a 13 film Joan Blondell Eclipse set.)

I wonder if offering a subscription model akin to what Vinegar Syndrome does would be effective for Criterion. Maybe at their size that wouldn't be feasible to do. Do any other boutiques do that?

The market is totally there but the total subscription cost would have to be less or equal than buying every title from Barnes and Noble during the 50% sale and I don't know how realistic that is.

I think there would be demand for sure. VS seems to be doing better than almost every other label out there and man they have a TON of films coming out. A ton.

If Criterion could increase their output to their level, well that would be amazing.

They thought about it but quickly shot it down when they started releasing Blu-rays. They didn't want to anger their retail partners. I'd be less inclined now anyway only because they release too many recent movies for my tastes.

The packaging on Trainspotting is really annoying. There is zero need to deviate from a normal sized case on this release. Shelf space is hard enough to find as it is without these odd packaging choices.

Just for the 4K release too, the BD is in a standard plastic case.

Now this is a rabbit's hole we should try to avoid, and yet...If I had to pick just one :

Bonus question: Anyone know why De Sica's Shoeshine has never been in the collection at all? That just seems like a no brainer to me, but there are numerous choices there as well.

Apparently this is region-locked, isn't that a violation of the 4K spec?

Save us, Obi-wan Criterion, you're our only hope.

With Pandora's Box apparently coming (plus I grabbed the Eureka UK), this would be my one choice:

If we’re talking Criterion DVDS that need Blu Rays I think Stray Dogs and Snow Trail needs to happen these are two Japanese films that need Blu Rays although Snow Trail does have a Blu Ray in Japan but not anywhere else.
