Three Eclipse sets have been on my list for a while (Fallen Women, the Kobayashi, and the Late Ray). Maybe now is a time to cross them off? Dunno.
I’m behind on Ozu sets but I keep holding out hope for a larger set of those somewhere. |

I'd love one as well but really want Paris, Texas first since that's the one Wenders Blu-ray of theirs that could really use the makeover. I gave it a spin a few months ago and it looks rough upscaled imo

Yeah--I ended up getting them. The extra 10 percent crossed my mind, but at the same time by the time the next sale is happening I'll be spending enough money to not want to throw in another 80 bucks. So I'd spread it out.

That's a good point, I'll probably end up grabbing 2 or 3 from my wish list. Will also move me closer to a $50 cert for the next flash sale.

So many of those titles from the Eclipse sets are amazingly underrated. Koreyoshi Kurahara's The Warped Ones is one of my favorite films of all time. The film itself is pretty much Japan's response to Godard's Breathless. A lot of the Japanese Eclipse sets (Some of y'all have already listed the best) that they have release are pretty amazing blind buys. Some of them are super fun and some of them are super well-crafted.
A few others I would like to recommend are: Oshima’s Outlaw Sixties (I am a huge Oshima fan so this pick is a little biased) Basil Dearden’s London Underground (Victim is one of the finest British films ever made; this is where my love for Dirk Bogarde began back when I was a middle schooler) Pearls of the Czech New Wave (Lot of great movies in here. While Daisies has already been re-released with a 4K restoration, the rest of the movies shouldn't be ignored). The Warped World of Koreyoshi Kurahara (A great selection from an amazing director with films like The Warped Ones, Black Sun, and the pocket-sized thriller Intimidation. A lesser known Japanese director alongside Yasuzo Masumura and Kaneto Shindo). |

The Daisies upgrade made sense, but one of my dream Criterion releases is some Czech New Wave set with the twenty-whatever titles that Janus has, with upgrades from this set, Fireman's Ball, Loves of a Blonde, Closely Watched Trains. Would be a GREAT and very cool release!

Back to the Eclipse set, do you, or perhaps anyone else know if the films are in complete form? I read on an Amazon review that some of the films are missing footage. Either way, I'm certain the set is worth it, and I really want to see Street of Shame. I also need to get The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum BD sometime. |

I'm really not sure about your missing footage question, I'm sorry. Maybe someone else can help! |

To be honest I stopped picking up the Eclipse sets a few years ago given that I can stream (just about if not) all of the films from them on the Criterion Channel and all the writing is included on the release listing on Criterion's website. The last DVDs I bought were a handful of Second Run releases I thought they might not upgrade, some of which they've since upgraded. Second Run, by the way, has Blu-Rays of all or most of the films in that Czech Eclipse set (which is one that I do own).

I am going to see a big screen showing of Le Samouraï at Plaza Theatre here in Atlanta on Thursday, April 25.
Le Samouraï is my favorite Criterion title to date and one of my all-time favorite movies in general, so this is a bucket list thing to see it at a theater. ![]() |

I should note that for those interested, the following sets are listed as out of print: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And the following are currently out of stock but not listed as out of print: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Another note to those who might have been unaware, since I certainly was before attempting to make this post: in order to embed DVDs, you have to use [DVD] instead of [BD]. Evidently the database reuses numerical entries for different formats. One more note: All of the films from the out of print sets other than the Carlos Saura set are streaming on The Criterion Channel, and in the case of the Akerman collection, they are all in the new Blu-Ray box set. Unfortunate about the Saura set because in the past couple years I've gained an interest in classical music and would now be interested in Carmen and El amor brujo. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ultimately, a big reason I collect physical media is that I don't expect streaming will always remain available in its current abundance. So even though a lot of Eclipse films are on the Channel currently, I like having copies in my personal library. |

Heads up...just received a $20 gift card for being a Criterion Channel Charter member. Mine went to my spam folder so I almost missed it. Don't accidentally delete yours!
