Man...just found out Criterion has La Balance (1982). Another movie that may never get a physical release here.

There needs to be more Isabelle Huppert on Blu-ray. I would love to see these become available. Some have BD's but no English subtitles.

La dentellière (1977)
Violette Nozière (1978)
Lady of the Camelias (1981)
Eaux profondes (1981)
Godard's Passion (1982)
The Story of Piera (1983)
Une affaire de femmes (1988)
Ma Mère (2004)
Nue propriété (2006)
My Little Princess (2011)

Fully agree. Violette Noziere I haven't had the chance to see but it has been on my watchlist for a while.

8 Women was released here in the US during the DVD era and I think it's a pretty fun film, even if I'm not fully sold by its ending.

I also would like to see Story of Women, Malina, Entre Nous, Amateur (Region A release), and the Hong Sang Soo films as well. Also an upgrade of Coup de Torchon, a lesser known OOP Criterion title that is ripe for rediscovery. I'm curious to see Aloise which also stars Delphine Seyrig and Michael Lonsdale but I haven't heard much about it mainly because it's barely known outside of France. Also Best Friend's Girl which is probably not even a good movie lol

Entre Nous is available from Cohen Media. The Concorde BD of Malina is oop and needs a new release. I have the Artificial Eye release of Amateur, but yes it could use a region a release. 8 Women also needs a BD.

Maybe I'm missing it in the above, but this is another Huppert-starring film I would like to see released: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Woma...ge_(1990_film). I haven't even been able to find a new DVD copy

Malina is a great one btw

Their new trailer also has more of a mainstream feel than the usual ones they do for the films they acquired/licensed. The movie will be released in select theaters on April 18th, and wider on April 25th.

Here's the trailer:

Ironically I also saw a $16 matinee screening of Black Bag on Friday afternoon and the movie was absolutely delightful. I was mesmerized by Koepp's screenplay, Soderbergh's direction, and the lead performances of Fassbender and Blanchett. I would love to see this one in the Criterion Collection later this year as it's a good one to own (as I have to watch it a second time to see if I can pick up on the clues). Re-watchability is 7.5/10 for me. However, I did not see the Cronenberg trailer in the previews! Instead I was treated to 10 min. of commercials and 20 min. of previews and policy announcements after the designated start time of 4:35pm (the actual film started at 5:05pm!). Albeit, I am on vacation in South Florida at the moment, but the Regal Cinema down here, as much as it's new and high tech, has piss poor customer service (I discovered they didn't have a single cup at the concession stand so I walked over to the bar and pleaded for a single cup for water – the man, who was preoccupied on his phone, finally stopped scrolling and got off his phone to toss me a cup to which I walked back over to the concessions and the lady, ignoring me while she was on her phone, finally caved in and poured some water from the dispenser. I even was very friendly, kind, and thanked both of them graciously.). True, they want me to spend even more money, but complimentary water is always an option at theaters and I like to use this hack every time I attend one. Nevertheless, customer service is irrelevant today apparently!

Question: If I used part of my $50 certificate to place a preorder and if I cancel that order will I lose the amount?

The Elephant Man will be screening at the IFC Center in April for its 45th Anniversary, sourced from the 4K restoration that was supervised/approved by Lynch. Both the Blu-ray and the DVD have been "Currently Unavailable" at Criterion, and elsewhere for some time now. I have to imagine this is coming from Criterion sometime this year. The UK release has been out since 2020.

Just got my criterion order today and surprise surprise, every film with a scanavo case had the artwork misaligned again. I finally wrote Criterion about this. I doubt they'll care, as this issue had gotten so widespread over the last five years that if they haven't corrected it by now, they probably never will.

Oh yeah, I already realigned these and no need for a replacement as I'd only request that if these were torn, which thankfully they weren't.

But before somebody on here asks why this is even a big deal, well, the big deal is how prevalent this issue has become and how little Criterion seems to care. The fact they consider themselves this prestige company for releasing films on blu-ray and 4K UHD and yet have such poor quality control is a joke, nobody should be putting up with this.

I actually encourage everyone on here who has this issue complain to Criterion about it. I'm hoping if enough people make noise they will listen. They are the ONLY company I know of where this issue is so prevalent and that right there is a big red flag.

What in their production process is causing this to keep happening? Are these just awful employees or are there machines loading the cover into the case and doing a terrible job? I'd be curious if anyone knows what the process is at any company for how this is done.

Hey, I saw that when it opened up in theaters in Chicago, but had since forgotten all about it! What a great reminder of this fantastic film. Let's hope Criterion moves it out from under their sitting asses.

At this point my level of optimism with anything related to Criterion is pretty low. July is one of the their "big" months and would love to see some really good things, but expected more big 4K upgrades versus first time to HD big.

They do throw a bone every so often for me, but not like it used to be where they would serve a five course meal every month.

Fun fact: Though a classic French language crime film shot in Paris, its director was actually an American.

I'm 99% sure a machine loads the covers into the Scanovo cases. In this case, the machine would just be out of whack. While I don't have any with messed-up artwork, I did get the only 4K of After Hours that wasn't way off when I went to B&N. There were five 4Ks and seven Blu-rays, and mine was the only one that didn't look horrendous. It's especially bad on a then-new release of a then-highly demanded film.

It definitely is a problem, but I've successfully dodged it repeatedly.

I wonder how those in the UK who order some UK discs are doing. I haven't heard of these issues with UK discs. Then again, UK discs don't have most of the problems US ones have - scratches, floaters, missing inserts, blank discs - never heard a peep from that side of the pond.

There will definitely be 4K upgrades of Blu-ray titles. Aside from Japanese films though, my number one prediction for an upgrade would've been Brazil, which just got announced for June, so that admittedly threw my whole July prediction up in the air.

Marcel Carne's Daybreak has just been added in HD to iTunes via Criterion.

Physical release seems inevitable at some point in the near future.
