Thank you, Criterion, for continuing to make separate blurays. Unlike other labels.

You will continue to get my money.

I've been guessing for years that Criterion has been sitting on "Carnal Knowledge" ( I was so desperate for it that I ordered the UK import a few weeks ago). I also said they were sitting on "Paper Moon'- which they were obviously

Three other film I suspect they're holding : "Catch -22" and "Hud" and "The Defiant Ones"

No suspicion needed for Hud. The film is being shown theatrically courteously of Criterion.

Sorry if this was posted, but I didn’t see it in search. An aside in an interview with director Mary Harron on American Psycho’s 25th anniversary:

I THINK it came up when Dogfight was released because of the Lili Taylor connection, but don’t remember where.

'Hud' is a good film(it's aged well) that would readily find a new audience.

'Catch-22' is interesting and I kinda liked it, bu it didn't(and probably couldn't) capture the book's bleak absurdity and logic and just lifted certain characters and scenes from the book.

Nichols made an anti-war movie; the book was more complex than that.

I believe it's being shown at the TCM Film Festival in LA this month as well

I think "Catch-22" is a remarkable technical achievement, and is probably my favorite Mike Nichols movie (With 'Carnal Knowledge" a close second)

Interestingly, on the joint commentary that Nichols did with Steven Soderburgh on the DVD, he was a bit critical himself how the film turned out. One thing he said that stuck out : in retrospect he felt Alan Arkin was too cerebral an actor, and felt that the film would have played better with a more "warmer" actor like Dustin Hoffman in the lead role

That I agree with.

As for Arkin, again, they missed the point of the book and wrote the character in the movie as being a paranoid schmuck.

In the book(and what was one of the points of the story), 'Yossarian' was a sane man using plain logic to deduce that war is crazy, the military is crazy, and life itself is crazy. Yossarian is afraid of dying, yes. But we all are.

I know it's a common(and somewhat annoying) complaint that a movie didn't capture the essence of the book, but they missed the boat on this one.

It just ends up being a 'MASH' like anti-war movie that's occsionally funny in the first half, and then gets serious and ham-fisted in the second. Because Nichols the director, it's interesting and well shot and orchestrated, but it's not Heller's 'Catch-22'.

Tarantino did exactly the same thing with the same movie when TCM put him in charge of programming a night of movies years ago. He said with that title how could the movie be bad?

The fee is hidden in the shipping costs (which is normally 4$/item). This is what I see shipping Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters 4K to Quebec:
Quote:
Subtotal CAD$50.24
Shipping (Flat Rate - Fixed) CAD$4.00
Tax CAD$2.71
GST QC (5%) CAD$2.71

Ah, sneaky. Weird that it would have that fee when it's not even a box set or anything. I wonder if it's based on the number of discs or something, and something with 3-discs (like Brazil) gets hit too.
