I'm with you. The one I really want to see is The Bad Sleep Well, Drunken Angel, Stray Dog, and Red Beard next. Almost 100% the next release will be High and Low, and I'm actually still pretty happy with the current Blu-ray and the 4K master isn't enough of an improvement for me to jump on it.

My theater announced the 40th anniversary screenings for Ran a week or two ago but this post helped me to remember to get my tickets for the screening! This is admittedly one of the few classics that I could never get into but the last time I saw this (And my only time) was the old 2002 Fox Lorber DVD with the weird aspect ratio (One of the worst looking DVDs I've ever watched alongside the original Sorcerer).
Hopefully, this rewatch of this film with a 4K restoration I still have yet to watch (Despite owning the Best Buy Steelbook) will make me a fan of the movie. |

The gates of Disney starting to open up combined with the clout of Scorsese has boosted my hopes for 'The Color of Money'. Other random guesses are

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...212556&i=1&l=1 Also, many people for years strongly criticized and made fun of Criterion for being so reluctant to go for UHD. Look at the thread for the Do The Right Thing's UHD from Universal, it's filled with people mocking Criterion and calling them backwards for not having released the new 4K master as an UHD to begin with, for not having gotten into the UHD format yet. And even Criterion got into UHD, there were still regular criticisms that Criterion didn't release enough UHDs. Last edited by aladdin123; 05-07-2025 at 11:04 PM. |

EDIT: Also to call the current BD nearly borderline unwatchable just seems like a bit of hyperbole. Not sure if you remember how the very first DVD of the film looked compared to this Blu-ray. I think it's a bit sad how good we have it right now, yet people will continue to find imperfections for the sake of it seems. I feel like trying to find an ever lasting satisfaction is like trying to find ever lasting happiness that will never happen. Technology will constantly evolve as well expectations to the find a perfect product that will never exist. What we have now is great if you think about it, but apparently what was good before is not good enough now. Last edited by DukeTogo84; 05-07-2025 at 11:46 PM. |

For what being good before not being good enough now, that happens a lot in technology. DVDs were once upon a time good enough, but they look awful in modern OLEDs. Even blu-rays that looked decent in older LCDs, such as Batman The Animated Series, are now brutally exposed by OLEDs, showing many artifacts of bad encoding, such as banding and macroblocking. You don't care about top quality as much as most users here do, and that's totally fine. An UHD with HDR can look truly incredible, so much nuance, it is perhaps the greatest improvement in picture quality since going from VHS to DVD (and B&W films benefit so much from HDR too, the grayscale becomes so much richer, almost like seeing copor in black and white). And even an SDR UHD can reproduce the texture of film like it was never possible before. Criterion's SDR UHDs of Seven Samurai and The Wages Of Fear come to mind, truly gorgeous. With all that said, I acknowledge that every top format has its snobs, it's no different than some PC gamers. I admit I was hyperbolic regarding the Criterion blu of High And Low being "borderline unwatchable", but I stiĺl can't agree it looks wonderful. Much better blu-rays, such as One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Eyes Wide Shut, have been called awful in these forums. And the jump in quality from the blu-ray to the new 4K master of High And Low is as night and day as possible. It's such a gigantic jump, one of the greatest I've ever seen. The old blu-Ray has really whacked contrast, with awful black crush and overblown whites. Look at how much better all white shirts look in the new master, while they are all horribly nuked in the old BD. Also, I believe that 4K HDR is the end of the line for most movies. The original negatives of 20th century movies, even 65mm, don't have any more detail beyond 4K, often not even 4K detail. A jump from 4K HDR to 8K HDR would not make sense at home, only in truly gigantic screens like the ones frok theaters. And even then, IMAX digital and Dolby Cinema are 4K. There are many movies that got 4K HDR transfers that we can safely call definitive or at least close enough that any new master could only offer marginal improvement, if that. Casablanca, Singin' In The Rain, Paths Of Glory, 2001, A Clockwork Orange, It's A Wonderful Life, My Fair Lady, Touch Of Evil, Fargo, Citizen Kane, Spartacus, The Wizard Of Oz, Days Of Heaven, The Last Picture Show, Anatomy Of A Murder, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Double Indemnity, Some Like It Hot, Psycho, and I can go on... Restoration technology has gotten to a point that it is disappointing when a transfer has easily avoidable flaws, such as the frozen grain halos in the new 4K masters of North By Northwest and The Searchers, though they are still such gigantic improvements over the old blu-ray, in regards to detail and even more when it comes to color, that I think no one should avoid buying them. I want Throne of Blood, Kagemusha, Rashomon, and The Hidden Fortress in 4K. I don't care that they're upgrades. Hopefully they're released this year.
The one new to blu-ray Kurosawa release I would like is The Men who Tread on the Tiger's Tail, but it's not even a full length movie. |
