My guesses are probably all wrong anyway as it seems to me I've been getting the title announcements wrong left and right this year a lot for Criterion.

Are August announcements usually light? Not expecting any big guns to be announced.

Not that anyone cares-or should, but I predicted this would happen a few pages back in this thread.

We live in a culture now where we are all one step away from becoming a pariah. It's mostly sad for the victims of the incidents, of course, and I'm sure they get a modicum of satisfaction from their perpetrator being at least "canceled." The rest of us just have to go along with it when the opportunities to make our own judgments are removed from the equation, i.e. not being able to experience the canceled person's work anymore.

Criterion Channel was really platforming Down With Love a few months back, including an interview with the director, Peyton Reed.

With Reed expressing interest in doing a remaster around the 20th anniversary, I’d love if this was one of Criterion’s more out of left field releases.

DDA is coming directly from Warner Q4 this year. It was on a 2025 teaser that was leaked late last year.

French Connection was kind of soft announced a few months ago so it's past the rumor stage. Question is, who will release it?

You misread it. It was listed under "anniversaries," same as Barry Lyndon. It'll probs come through a boutique instead.

Always been a huge Gérard Depardieu fan, so sad to hear about some of the horrible choices he made late in life with touching two women in an unwanted way. It just begs the questions, should a film suffer because of this? I don't have the answer, but it is interesting. Also, I often hear people saying won't buy a Roman Polanski directed film, but I don't often hear people say they won't buy a Harvey Weinstein produced film? Both get money from sales, so what exactly is the difference?

Just thinking out loud, but hate seeing art suffer because of the horrible choices people make. Was really hoping for a Criterion release of Cyrano De Bergerac and wonder if it was already in production?
There are some very loud people on social media advocating for canceling various others for actual horrible (or alleged horrible) behavior. But I wonder how much of that loud opinion actually affects sales other than among a minority?

We know that most older movies--that aren't certain hugely well known films--don't sell much anyway now, especially with the continued decline of physical media sales. If they won't sell without any notoriety, re-releases are a lot less likely anyway.

However Paramount didn't seem to have any issues. I noticed with their 2024 4K release of CHINATOWN, which sold well enough to have a standard 4K release only six months after their more expensive Paramount Presents release. Not only did Roman Polanski direct CHINATOWN he also acts in it,. But no cancelation that I'm aware of.

Paramount had three other BD releases of CHINATOWN between 2012 and 2017. But there was there no backlash that ended those releases at a single issue and then being deleted. Instead they did two 4Ks as well.

When it comes to disk releases, my guess is a whole lot of it comes down to whether or not they think a disk will sell sufficiently to be profitable, regardless of the personnel involved. There are likely a lot more reasons for Criterion's decisions if or when to release a 1990 French film than this week's court conviction. Including licensing costs and preprint quality.

CYRANO is currently available on the Criterion Channel, so Criterion's cancel button seems to be running rather slow (and I wonder if the number of streaming viewers might do more to determine if there is a disk release than his conviction).

I don't know if Polanski still gets residuals on his US films (have they possibly been attached by the courts?) but didn't Harvey Weinstein years ago have to divest himself from both of his previous production/distribution companies? (So likely not getting future payments for those films.)

The generations that are so fond of instantly canceling people and things probably don't know who Polanski is or at least care about him because he is not currently active to such a degree where they feel overly offended by his presence. Many people who get canceled tend to be more in the public eye or are conspicuously displayed, as old Civil War general statues, to such a degree that they must be erased as much as possible. If Polanski lived in America I think the opposition would be much more vocal. As it is, if you cry barracuda, people say huh, what? Cry shark and we have a panic on the fourth of July.

I'd love seeing Down With Love get a Criterion release, I was really surprised to see it on the channel in February (I think it was for the love in new york category?). I think Down with Love is such a fun watch, as a fan of Pillow Talk, you can really see the inspiration and how they changed it up in a fresh, more modern way. Also, it's gorgeous to watch! It deserves a US blu-ray release at the very least.
