I don't get the obsession over loving grain. Don't get me wrong, DNR can bug me too (like with the Predator BD) but lots of grain bugs me just as much, sometimes more (the new Total Recall BD, for example, has too much grain IMO). People complained about the To Kill a Mockingbird BD but I thought it looked great. I'm fine with a little bit of grain, but I don't get the obsession over wanting it on a transfer.

Grain conveys details. If one movie is supposed to have X amount of grain, X amount of grain should be conveyed on the BD in order not to lose details.

Usually, a scan captures more grain than X, so there is often a light degraining, but IMO, a movie shouldn't be degrained lower than this X threshold, or you'll face a loss of details.

Except if the filmmaker or a technical person from the original movie team is here to supervise and say "This is clearly too much and useless. It's not conveying any more details so let's just remove a bit of this grain here".
That's what happened on Aliens, for exemple, and I'm fine with it.

Here, as for Universal, no one can say "Hey, my movie is not supposed to be with so few grain".

Universal, for exemple, is just choosing to remove some, because THEY THINK it's better this way.
It's not about respect of the original material, but just really updating the look of the movie because THEY THINK it fits better with the current tastes of spectators.

It's just like their fix of the travelling shot in Out of Africa.
"Yup, it was shaky the first time, we think it's better now that we fixed it".

Did they ask Redford about it ? I'm quite sure they didn't. They just think it's better, up to the point they don't care about the original material.

Well that does make sense. I have to admit I'm a noob when it comes to knowledge about film grain. Don't get me wrong, I like having it there, but sometimes people talk about how great a certain transfer is when I think it suffers from having too much grain (again, Total Recall is an example, but the old BD was worse, so I'm counting my blessings.)

Most people can't tell the difference between digital noise and grain.

Is there a thread about film grain and digital noise here? I don't want to stray away from the main topic and I'd like to learn more about it.

I believe there was one, I think it was in the MOVIE sub forum but it might be way down in the pages I don't think a post as been made in it for a while? I have not seen popup at all for some months.

Personal preference aside, Total Recall didn't have "too much grain." It had exactly the amount of grain that's always been there, on the negative.

So for Last Year at Marienbad fans where should I start on viewing Alain Robbe-Grillet's filmography?

Has anyone else's order from the flash sale still not shipped? No clue what the deal is here. I ordered one blu-ray, for pete's sake. I bought about 12 during the V-Day sale and they shipped the next day...

Mine barely shipped on Friday. I'm sure they are going in order of orders received, plus they have new shipping prices from Canada so more people ordered, plus they might be covering the bigger orders first.

What I'm trying to say is, be patient. You don't NEED your movies right now - unless there's an emergency that you need them, then by all means - but I wouldn't worry. Just sit back, relax, and plan your new list of films till your order gets in

Gah! I just bought the most expensive single Criterion since my days as a laserdisc owner.

Panicked a bit a few days ago when I suddenly discovered that CHUNKING EXPRESS had gone OOP. None of the market place sellers on amazon.com would ship it outside the U.S. and the only place that appeared to still have one copy in stock was amazon.ca. So I quickly ordered it at $46.72 CAD. It arrived today and for some reason it was shipped by courier even though I chose the cheapest shipping option available. Naturally DHL also wanted me to pay taxes and a fee which was an additional $43.77 US!

I know I shouldn't complain too much. I have been quite lucky avoiding customs for the last couple of years. But it *was* a bit annoying to discover that several sellers have it up for sale on amazon.com market place today for $29.99 and that they would ship internationally. Oh well...

Don't sweat it; at least you got it. I still have friends that give me weekly offers for my Zodiac 2-Disc blu. Plus, Chungking Express is absolutely positively one of the best Criterion's out there, IMO. It's so good.

If that is the case, look for a quick Rosemary's Baby sell out.

Great to see. I know Martin Sheen is really proud of Badlands and is still good friends with Malick.

Should be a great release!
