Steer clear of The New World and Thin Red Line if Days of Heaven is too slow for you.

During the past couple of summers, I've paid money to see these extravagant special effects blockbusters only to walk out of the theater and immediately forget what the movie was all about. I decided against going to see Iron Man 3, for example, because I don't remember one single thing about Iron Man 2. I mean, I remember enjoying it while I was at the theater, but everything blends together storywise in retrospect. I avoided the new Star Trek movie, because the 2009 Star Trek reboot had the same effect on me.
Nothing about The Lone Ranger quickens my pulse. It looks fun, but ultimately forgettable, just like the Pirates of the Caribbean movies were.

It's almost like the "loudness wars" with the mastering of new albums over the past decade or so, where the dynamic range of albums is clipped to death so that every instrument and nuance is amped up to maximum loudness to compete on iPods and mp3 players. The songs on the recent U2 albums are good enough, for example, but I find that I do not listen to them as often, because, on a subconscious level, it's physically painful to absorb the music. A lot of the newer movies, especially the 3D movies, have the same overbearing effect of too much going on all at once, as if to compete with the busy video games that people are playing these days.

I'm holding out some optimism for Pacific Rim, though, because Guillermo del Toro is at the helm, and he does this sort of thing as well as anyone. I also have a hankering to relive some of the old Voltron cartoons from my youth. I'm planning to give this movie a chance on the big screen.
It IS exactly just like the "loudness wars" indeed. Movies are all about money these days and very little of a big blockbuster film contains any sort of artistic vision or "auteur" cinematic handprint... but it has been like that since the late 1970s after Jaws and Star Wars came out and Hollywood saw just how big a blockbuster film could be. Up until Spielberg and Lucas came onto the scene, the American Hollywood film industry was in a serious funk especially when United Artists and indie filmmakers in the late 1960s owned the scene. The films were original and visionary but hardly made much money. Today the only way you will see a director's vision is through independent cinema and that is it. RARELY will there be a big Hollywood movie that actually is a great film on par with independent cinema. The only hope is that a legendary director oversees the creative process of this big Hollywood movie. Recent examples are Lincoln, Inception or The Departed made by big Hollywood directors (but with artistic vision intact). Directors like Gore Verbinski, Roland Emmerich, Michael Bay, J.J. Abrams, Dennis Dugan, Peter Berg, Zack Snyder and of course the late Tony Scott, are money directors, in that Hollywood bets that their big blockbusters will make a ton of dough. Their films are mostly poor though at least by the critics out there. Recently Spielberg came out and said something about Hollywood being in danger with all these big money movies and he is probably right. The man that started the trend can legitimately predict its demise too. Hopefully del Toro's new film Pacific Rim won't turn out like a bad Michael Bay movie, but judging from the previews, it sure looks like one helluva noisy beast.

Is there a director more reclusive than Terrence Malick? I doubt it.

The question is, who was/is more reclusive?

Stanley Kubrick

or

Terrence Malick

?

The uncanny thing is that both directors' last names end with "ick". Ick! Does this "ick" ending create a natural sort of reclusiveness and timidity with the public eye? It sure is strange I must say.

I still think Mr. Malick is some sort of alien human from the future who came back in time to make films but swore an oath not to talk to people or reveal anything about himself because then he might destroy the space-time continuum.

at least Kubrick let his daughter film a "making of" for the film The Shining

For the B2G1 free can I just add nine titles to my cart and it'll automatically take off three or do I have to buy three at a time and make three separate orders?

I agree with you on new movies. It's like, what's the point? They're all basically the same.

As for U2 and loudness, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb is exactly like this. It's too loud (and it's only a decent record). The song All Because of You starts out with an annoying guitar squeal.

I have six in my cart right now (preparing for a possible overlap if sales) and 2 have been taken off the total already.

Yes, vinyl is the way to go but getting this digitized to FLAC or ALAC format (for computer/ipods) is a bit tedious.

True, and I'm sure Malick has children of his own too. They ought to follow in Vivian Kubrick's footsteps and make a behind the scenes documentary asap while he's still alive!

I forgot to mention that I was irate when I first bought U2's last album "No Line on the Horizon" and discovered just how "loud" the album was. I did a lot of investigation and ended up buying the vinyl version. It sounded immediately better and I even was able to download a vinyl FLAC version of this album too from somewhere not long afterwards.

Fortunately there are still some great bands out there that produce/master their own albums and CDs and one band that does is My Bloody Valentine. Kevin Shields is actually a massive critic of the overblown dynamic range epidemic that started in the 1990s and I am glad their new album MBV sounds extraordinary!

I don't respect U2 anymore because they became the Michael Bay of the music world. Big blockbuster albums that lack the substance of their earlier work (The Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby).

I think I've settled on what will be my initial haul when I'm down in Darien Lake tomorrow.

Chantal Akerman in the 70's
The Night of the Hunter
M
Rules of the Game
Beauty and the Beast
Children of Paradise
The Killing
Insignificance
Being John Malkovich

Quite a few "essential" titles that I've yet to see and an upgrade. I could see myself dropping one of the last three, at least for now.

I'm one of those oddballs who just can't buy digibooks/digipacks, so my question is will On the Waterfront ever be released in a regular case by Criterion? Or does history suggest its not happening? Either way, I want this movie BUT would like to wait for a traditional case. Thanks.

Yes you certainly are an oddball. The packaging for that one is fantastic and you'll be waiting a long, long time most likely for a traditional cased version of OTW.
