Oh, and the film I watched last night - Beauty and the Beast. I guess I wouldn't universally recommend this to everyone - It's a surprisingly 'straight' telling of Beauty and the Beast - But it's a lovely film.

It reminds me of the sort of stuff Jim Henson would like to do in his non-Muppet films.

Revanche
Sweet Smell of Success* (Definitely)

Well obviously Sweet Smell of Success, followed by:
M
Battle of Algiers
Wages of Fear
Diabolique
These are pretty safe blind buys in my opinion. I do like Brazil and Black Narcissus, but not knowing your preferences, these aren't the safest.

M and Sweet Smell of Success are definitely essentials. I'm also leaning toward Revanche. It might not be essential exactly but it's really freaking good, a very good blind buy candidate and a really good example of why I love Criterion.

These are more fun than feel good...

Blow Out
Charade
The Lady Vanishes

Chungking Express is very feel good (I thought so, anyway...it's just so charming at times) but it's now out of print, if you stumble across one grab it.

I haven't watched it yet but I would say For All Mankind is probably pretty feel good in that inspiring sort of way.

And maybe People on Sunday too. It's not really feel good exactly but much like Chungking Express it has a certain charm I really connected with. When it finished I felt 'wow, that amazing' and not in any dark or depressing or thought provoking or challenging sort of way...just in a 'wow' sort of way.

Ohhhh! I forgot The Lady Vanishes. It's such a great film and one of my favorite Hitchcock's ever.

As far as For All Mankind goes, I'm not a space fan at all, nor a documentary fan, and I absolutely loved it. Very informative and not overwhelmingly long.

Also, I forgot to mention Lonesome as a feel good film. It left me with a smile on my face during and post-viewing. I'd also have to say the Chaplin films, too. He's a great person.

Feel good Criterions?

1. For All Mankind. It's the absolute most transportative and wondrous film in the Collection. Plus, the soundtrack is insanely good.

Speaking of feel good films, I just revisited my DVD copy of Dancer in the Dark. The film could really use a great US BluRay release, preferably Criterion. I also wouldn't mind hours of musical extras

I was just thinking about editing my post to add that.

It's definitely heavy but never depressing and it's also very uplifting in a To Kill a Mockingbird sort of way.

Definitely takes a while for it to get "feel good", but fair choice nonetheless.

Salo

But seriously, The Gold Rush and Modern Times are high on that list. Maybe even The Great Dictator to an extent.

And while it is a horror movie, The Blob is feel good because of its levels of cheese and awesomeness.

I also agree with 12 Angry Men. Maybe The Lady Vanishes too.

Thanks Octagon! Good Recommendations! apart from Blow Out which i find somewhat disturbing.

Charade and Lady Vanishes - I'll soon be getting these.

Chungking Express. I know a friend of mine already has this Criterion, so will watch it tomorrow. / BTW I highly doubt i could find this OOP title locally, might end up ordering the UK version.

For all Man Kind - sorry, not into documentaries.

People on Sunday - I just watched some of it on Youtube and it's a bit confusing to me, no subtitles and it's mainly all musical. I need to learn more foreign languages.

Thanks for all the additional input, guys! I honestly don't know what I'd do without this forum... Other than be completely ignorant to good cinema, I mean.

People on Sunday is a German silent film made in 1930. Part of its uplifting charm is its use of non-professional actors, a somewhat carefree story about a double date (although parts are open to a darker interpretation), and the time capsule peek it provides the viewer into a lost world of Weimar-era Berlin soon to be swept away forever.

Not sure what you watched on youtube. If you have never seen a silent film, they have music and intertitles (in English for those released in English speaking countries). People on Sunday is a fantastic film.

I would also recommend Still Walking.

I totally agree with you - It must be a fantastic movie, but honestly I've not watched any silent films, so to interpret what's going on is a bit confusing to me .. nevertheless i will give it a try.

As for Still Walking... thank you for this recommendation. This one seems like the kinda movie i might actually like.

I checked the ones i have for feel good movies and the only ones i could come up are:

Lonesome
Three Colors: Red
Monsoon Wedding

I guess most good movies are somewhat depressing or to deal with disturbing matters to some extent hehe.
