Fear and Desire isn't that bad. Kubrick hated it so much he tried to destroy all the copies of the film. Personally I enjoyed it and it was interesting to see how Kubrick got his start. Not the best, but worth checking out.

If that sale really happens....

Words cannot express my happiness!!

Kubrick's later work is a bit spotty for me, and I'd be inclined to agree with you that outside 2001 and Barry Lyndon (actually, I'm pretty partial to Eyes Wide Shut) Paths of Glory and The Killing are great, great films. I haven't seen Fear and Desire yet, but I'll put in my two cents: Killer's Kiss is WOEFUL. It's often technically incompetent, has some of the clunkiest flashbacks in a genre full of them, and some terrible acting. Of the 50-60 noirs I've seen, I find it fascinating that only a year apart Kubrick both made one of the best in the genre that I've seen, and the single worst.

It's been a while since I've bought a Criterion. Ordered La Notte and The Spy Who Came in from the Cold on Blu-ray. I've seen the latter once years ago, and remember really loving it until the end which left me a bit cold(pun intended). I'm hoping La Notte will blow my mind, just as Antonioni's L' Avventura did. The early island scenes were simply wow, and Monica Vitti is so beautiful. I also own Identification of a Woman and Red Desert, but haven't had the time to watch them yet.

I wouldn't count on that, that's the starting date of the 50% off British Television sale.

So, I accidentally bought an extra copy of Fincher's "the game" today. I opened it up and put it on my shelf only to realize I had it already. If anyone wants to trade and CC blus that they haven't been too thrilled with or anything in that nature, let me know. i posted it in the trading forum but I thought this thread sees the most action from the CC fans, so I'd post it here too.

Fear and Desire is just embarassingly amateurish. Some interesting ideas but clunky execution.

Thanks to the B&N sale I was able to pick up many BDs over the past two weeks. So far yesterday's was the biggest and best, and with it also I hit a milestone. After getting the newly released Zatoichi, plus Still Walking and Merry Xmas Mr Lawrence yesterday which I kept not finding in stores and had to order, I now own every Japanese Criterion BD to date.

I'm glad that you enjoyed Blue. Red is my favorite film in the trilogy. I already had a soft spot for Irene Jacob after watching The Double Life of Veronique, so that probably influenced my opinion about that film in the trilogy quite a bit.

You also bought Seven Samurai and Zatoichi right? Have you had the chance to watch either of those yet? I have been able to watch the first 9 Zatoichi films on youtube and they are very enjoyable. I will try to buy the set early next year. Need to save up some money even if I can get it at 50% off.

Anyway, seems like you are building your Criterion Collection very quickly

Does this apply to over the counter stores buys only or even on-line purchases?

That is a pretty cool shot of all your Japanese Criterion movies. Nice!

For all the non-US Criterion collectors, what's the cheapest/best place to buy them online? I'm finally taking the plunge after Black Friday, planning on building up a collection over the next year.

seems like they usually run the "buy 2, get 1 one free" deal on movies in december.

the 30% off coupon is for all purchases during black friday weekend in store or online. idk why a cashier would refuse it.

I came very close to grouping Eyes Wide Shut with Barry Lyndon and 2001. I only recently watched it and found it fascinating. My interest in Killer's Kiss is almost non-existent, so I doubt I'll ever get around to it.

I was actually surprised at how good it was as I wasn't expecting much. I can't comment on its technical competence or lack thereof because it has been a while, but Kubrick riffs on himself in his later work -specifically A Clockwork Orange. If I recall correctly, it is a fairly brisk film and, for me, a completely worthwhile and unexpectedly enjoyable experience.

I know that you didn't explicitly spell out any details (or at least it seems because I haven't seen La Notte, but please.. spoiler tags if you are speaking about 'the end' of a film.

I am a Criterion Collector and live in the UK. I tend to buy from all sorts of sources including Amazon (usually the US one), E-bay (I have a trusted Criterion specialist seller - blowitoutahere - who is good value), sales like the current B&N one and even iOffer.
