Criterion has been awesome releasing some of my most beloved films. Here's hoping a 2014 Blu-ray release comes for:

I noticed that Janus hold the US theatrical rights to the restored 'Umbrellas of Cherbourg' - is this a guarantee that a US bluray release might happen - or does the video rights remain with Studio Canal.

Videodrome is twice the film A Clockwork Orange is. To me, Videodrome is pure cinema. It builds and leads you to a climax that is one of the finest in history. A Clockwork Orange has a third act that doesn't seem to have any idea what it wants to accomplish, or when it wants to end.

Nothing's guaranteed, but odds are pretty good Criterion will release it. It's the one and only Demy title they've released in the past (on LD), so odds even better.

Though UK version is Studio Canal, so it ain't over till it's over... And sometimes it takes Criterion forever to get to certain titles, so it may be a while until we even know that.

Would be nice to see Criterion do some Demy blus. Looks like the next French blu is going to be Peau Dâne (Donkey Skin).

Studio Canal don't have any rights to the title in the US.

That's because Kubrick decided not to film Chapter 21. I agree with this because including it wouldn't have added anything to the film.

I have seen all Scorsese/DiCaprio collaborations except for The Wolf of Wall Street and all I keep thinking about is one thing...

Please don't use Gimme Shelter on the soundtrack for this film too Marty. I actually love the song, but I think he needs to move on. Can anyone confirm if Scorsese uses it again or not? I'll eventually see the movie no matter what, but I guess I'm feeling nitpicky about the soundtrack right now.

By the way, my favorite Scorsese/DiCaprio collaboration is The Aviator. It doesn't hurt that I love aviation, and the scope of the film is impressive. I believe that Leo deserved an Oscar for that role. However, I haven't seen Jamie Foxx in Ray before, so I can't argue against Foxx getting the Oscar over Leo that year. At least one of my favorite actresses, Cate Blanchett, received the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance as Katharine Hepburn.

Also, should I wait for The Wolf of Wall Street to come to blu-ray or is it a must-see theatre experience?

Though, 2001's surviving cut scenes have never been released so it may not have made any difference!

I would say it's a must see in theaters. It's much different than anything you would expect from Scorsese.

My brief and largely spoiler free review can be found here.

A) I don't remember hearing 'Gimme Shelter' and C) yes, you should see it in theaters. This was the best theater experience I had this year in terms of audience response, and the bigscreen exaggerates the excess that much more.

B) The Aviator is probably my favorite Marty/Leo pairing too, even more than The Departed. It fits snug into Scorsese's cinematic dissections of the American Dream while also being a great biopic that takes its liberties in kind without falling into the staid tropes of the genre. I also love the tributes to classic Hollywood sprinkled about, from the small cameos to the style of filming. It is definitely one of Leo's strongest performances (and I would have voted him the Oscar over Foxx).

From what I've read Kubrick had his assistants destroy any "extra" materials.

Akira Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress is coming to Criterion DF in March. That is a film I have wanted to see for a while.

(I personally think that The Night of the Hunter falls somewhat outside the parameters of film noir, but it is commonly classified in the genre and it is also one of my Top Five Criterion titles.)

Fritz Lang's M is a great predecessor to the genre
Pale Flower is an incredible Japanese film noir of sorts.

Rififi is an outstanding film noir title that will be in my hands in a couple of weeks, because I cannot wait to upgrade my old DVD to Blu-ray.

Ace in the Hole is another superb noir title that has been hinted as a Criterion upgrade.

There are some incredible film noir gems on Criterion DVD that I am hoping will see the light of day on Blu-ray...

Night and the City
The Naked City
Thieves' Highway
Pickup on South Street
The Killers
Blast of Silence
Brute Force
Stray Dog
The Bad Sleep Well

I still have not seen Christopher Nolan's Following, so I should prioritize that for a future sale.
I got M for Christmas. Third Man is on recording. Other then that, I haven't seen any of these films. So many to watch, so little time!

Gimme Shelter is one of my all time favorite songs off of one of my all time favorite albums (Let It Bleed, which also features You Can't Alway's Get What You Want, Midnight Rambler, the title track, and a country version of Honky Tonk Women). But I have to admit, it is overused in action, adventure, and thriller films. Luckily, the soundtrack has no sign of the Stones anywhere, but it does have Baby Got Back and a Lemonheads version of Mrs. Robinson

Now what does this have to do with Criterion? Well, the Gimme Shelter documentary is on Criterion, so there you go.

I really ought to give The Departed another chance.

I love the 2002 Hong Kong film, Infernal Affairs, from which The Departed is based, so I was disappointed with the Scorsese film when I rented it upon its DVD release years ago because I kept comparing it to its predecessor. There was nothing wrong with the Scorsese interpretation, per se, but I preferred the simple taut pacing of the Hong Kong movie.

I've been meaning to watch The Departed to appreciate it on its own terms, though.

I thought Infernal Affairs was pretty dull
