It was an ingenious idea! The part that really got me, was when the mother of the 14 year old prostitute says that, "she's just going through a phase." It shocks me that this film has never been available except on VHS. According to imdb, the film was shot on 16mm and then printed on 35 mm. So there definitely a chance this film could get some sort of restoration.

Default Rene Clair Marathon on TCM

Starting at 8 P.M. EST today TCM will show 3 Rene Clair films that are in the Criterion Collection. Soul les toits de Paris(Under the Roofs of Paris), A Nous la Liberte, and Le Million. I didn't realize until today that Under the Roofs of Paris is in the CC. TCM listing the French title instead of the English one threw me off.

Also, thanks for the book recommendation earlier Great Owl. I will pick up the book ASAP. The Story of Film is also a great book that covers several Criterion titles. The Story of Film documentary was interesting, but the narration by Mark Cousins can be difficult to listen to at times beacuse of his accent and bias towards European cinema.

I finished reading Blazing Guns on the Chisholm Trail earlier today, so I decided to watch Red River tonight. It was my third Hawks film and I'm still not entirely sold on his work. I've enjoyed all three (His Girl Friday, Red River, Bringing Up Baby), and Red River probably the best of them, but there are many other American directors from that period who I'm more excited by. I'm by no means giving up on his work, there are still a few more that interest me, but I hope to find something from him that clicks in the way I've wanted.

On the opposite end, I was thoroughly impressed with Douglas Sirk's All That Heaven Allows. I was introduced to Sirk's work earlier this week with Magnificent Obsession, which I wasn't particularly fond of. I found it a bit too silly. All That Heaven Allows feels much more refined and natural than the other film and has me excited to continue through Sirk's later period. Not to mention, the presentation on the new Criterion disc is jaw dropping.

Out of Douglas Sirk's Rock Hudson melodrama trilogy, I enjoy Magnificent Obsession the least. It's a still a great movie, but I thought the other two were a lot more powerful.

Don't sleep on The Tarnished Angels, I'd be interested to know what you make of that then. Of the other Sirk-Hudson films, Has Anybody Seen My Gal is great, Battle Hymn not so much, and Taza somewhere in the middle.

Just curious if anyone else has seen it?
Yeah it's a great one. There's a Facebook group page that has updates on the kids with photos and other stuff.

There's a Region 2 DVD out in Germany. I used to have a digital copy, I'll see if I still have it.

EDIT - my digital copy is from the VHS, I believe, but it looks fairly good.

I read a bit into The Tarnished Angels, but I ultimately decided to wait on recording it for now. I have a backlog of films to watch and it didn't jump out at me.

It was Shakey's. The first time I'd heard of that restaurant. I saw this long ago. It is an excellent documentary.

Thank you God Criterion is offering replacement cases for The Night of The Hunter.

I just finished watching Picnic at Hanging Rock for the first time since a TCM broadcasting last year. I really enjoyed it last year, but after this viewing, I would probably consider it in my top films of all time.

Let me just say that I am actually paranoid right now and covered in goosebumps. The film, as a whole, is one of the most eerie and unsettling things that I have ever seen.

I think TCM showed a different cut of the film because I honestly don't remember some of the things that were in it, especially the whole Sara and Miranda relationship. Regardless, this is probably the best the film will ever look.

Now that Criterion has announced that they are going back to separate blu-ray and dvd releases, can we expect them to offer replacement cases for these recent digipaks like RED RIVER, THE FRESHMAN, FOREIGN CORRESPONDANT and the upcoming HARD DAY'S NIGHT?

This was one of the films I was thinking about buying during the B&N sale. I'm definitely looking forward to checking this out. Hurry up July!!

It's a film that I feel should be in everybody's collection.

Well the booklets won't fit in a normal plastic case.

Perhaps when the initial print runs out a plastic case version will replace it. Similar to Night of the Hunter that can now be purchased at retail in a plastic case.

Thank you, I wasn't aware that there was a Region 2 DVD. I messaged Criterion and pleaded my case. Maybe something will come of it or maybe nothing will. Either way, I thought it was worth throwing the idea to them.

On a side not, I just got done watching Bernardo Bertolucci's film The Conformist. Wow, there's no denying Coppola was inspired by this film when he went to go make Godfather Part 2. Since there are currently only 2 Bertolucci films in the collection right now. I think this would make a perfect contender.

The Night of the Hunter was one of the rare exceptions. I'm assuming they began offering it in a plastic case beginning this year due to all of the complaints and since most people had the film, they are now offering the replacement case. The booklet is thin enough to fit, as well.

I honestly wouldn't count on too, too many items being offered as replacements.

I totally agree with more Bernardo Bertolucci films released by criterion. I really could not wait any longer for The Dreamers to be released. I picked up the korean blu ray release. Packaging looks great and the image and sound are decent.

Great avatar by the way. Persona and 3 Women are my favorite woman duo/surreal films. Take care

When Bernardo Bertolucci is at his best, it doesn't get much better than that. Thanks! 3 Women is one of my favorite films. Speaking of which I wrote a paper for my film class discussing both Persona and 3 Women, as well as Mulholland Drive. Not sure if I could handle a triple feature of these films.
