I take it back. Kubrick is too common of a pet name. I'd choose Malick. Yes, yes... a dog named Malick.

Indeed. And you know what would make for a great film? A biopic, documentary or drama film on artist Bob Ross. Wow, I'd FOR SURE see that.

I agree. I keep thinking its so wrong to open up a new Criterion release and pop the disc in without even reading the essay/s in the booklet. I feel like I need a primer but yet in this ADHD world, I'm just too impatient and don't feel like spending some time reading this before watching the film. Yet every now and then if its maybe a page or two of an essay, I'll read it first (such as on the "Eclipse" titles where maybe the essay is printed on the underside of the front/back sleeves when you open up the case).

Oh, I would never, ever, ever read an essay before watching a film for the first time.

I definitely see now why many individuals call Jacques Tati an incredibly polarizing artist. It seems as if you either like his films or you do not. I find myself somewhere in the middle. I watched Jour de Fête, M. Hulot's Holiday, and Mon Oncle from the box set and sadly they did not have much of an impression on me.

I admire Tati's creativity and while there are definitely a few humorous portions to his films, that seemed to be the extent of it for me. I think my biggest issue is that there aren't much of a story to his films. That's not entirely a bad thing, but the films have a tendency to feel their runtime and thensome after a while. He seemed to really enjoy exploring the classes and the evilness of modernization and the downfalls that have a tendency to come with it. While it does seem to get a bit repetitive quickly, I have to give him kudos.

I'm curious how the other three films are.

My Criterion Blu-ray is only modest. I only went multi-region for Blu-ray this year, so only have 55 Criterion Blu's. I order by spine, but separate digipaks and plastic cases. Box-sets are on a separate shelf. The films to the right of the main shelf are ones I haven't watched yet. Some (La dolce vita and It Happened One Night) only arrived recently, while others (Vivre sa vie, Vigo) are favourites that I upgraded from the Criterion DVD when I went multi-region.

Here's my Criterion DVD collection, which runs to around 150 titles.
[Show spoiler]

I also have a complete Masters of Cinema Blu-ray collection (and a row of their DVDs).

[Show spoiler]

This is probably my favourite non-Criterion shelf; my Lego art-deco cinema and French complete Eric Rohmer Box-set (as well as the German OUT 1 box-set and French Godard Politiques set).
[Show spoiler]
You know, I was wondering about The Complete Jean Vigo. On my cover art, on the spine where it says 'The Criterion Collection' it's yellow-ish but peach-colored on the back whereas on other pressings it seems entirely peach-colored. Has anyone else noticed this? I only picked up on it recently, fearing maybe I left it in the sun and it faded, but I leave all my Criterions in the same place, and it's the only with this issue.

Hmm, for a less obvious Bergman title I would probably go with Summer with Monika, which I probably admire so much since I can personally relate to the situation sans actually having a child.

Oh, and the Rossellini-Bergman set is another one I'd recommend for anyone.

Also I'm getting ready to place my first B&N sale order. I need opinions on two Bergmans - The Magician & Smiles of A Summer Night. If I can only buy one which is best to purchase first?
The Magician, as I just rewatched it this past weekend. It's pretty dark and creepy, although it slightly goes off the rails at the very end almost randomly.

I have most of the MoC steelbooks so for me there's no problem... Metropolis is almost the most expensive single film set I have - but it was cheaper than the Japanese DVD of Howl's Moving Castle which set me back £48

I don't really care about packaging but this really bugs me, so much so that I'd even rebuy it should they reissue it as a dual-format set at some point. For now I'm tempted to move it to the beginning of the collection!

The Eureka logo is at a different angle to the other releases.

A non-steelbook dual-format edition! I'm glad I didn't go down the steelbook route, it'd look even worse!

Ooooh I thought there was a non steelbook version >.< I thought mine was but its not haha!

I want to know why the spine is different lol - its bizarre. That would eb like Criterion changing their spin for one release XD, bad enough the older DVD's have different spine lol!

The Metropolis DVD has the same spine as the others lol XD

(wish more people did some job lots for MoC, cant find any on Ebay)

Could you do a custom cover (or even just the spine)?

Edit: It annoys me too when companies are inconsistent. During the 80s I was collecting the complete Prokofiev symphonies on Chandos (Neeme Järvi and the RSNO), for which they were doing a nice, consistent design... until the final title, where they put the spine the wrong way up and changed the text layout

Man we have problems haha, so much hassle over a spine :') - I think we need help!

I hate standard bluray releases! Some companies think its acceptable to have the title on spine the wrong way! and looks so odd!!!!!!

Those thin cases as well - WHY WHY WHY!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!??!

-

Ahhhh I forgot MoC have La Planete Sauvage!

I don't mind that, as I have quite a lot of French releases and the spines being that way is the norm for them. I group all of my Artificial Eye discs together anyway, so the uniformity means they look cool. It's strange that they opted for the spine being upside down on Anti-christ tho, given that they abandoned their house style for that release anyway.
