I gotta say, that's pretty mild by pretty much any standard let alone contemporary standards. Hell, Three's Company was more risqué in a lot of ways. In fact, the most eye-brow raising moment in the whole thing was hearing Gary Cooper use the word sex. That was pretty weird, I gotta say ![]() And just to be clear, it's a really good movie. Noel Coward...say no more. And for its time it was pretty bold but we live in a world where Blue is the Warmest Color was not only made but was celebrated and praised. (edt: ****, now I can't get that freaking song out of my head. Come and knock on our door...We've been waitin' for you...) |

I'm as a big a fan of pre-code as there is. And this movie is not an example to go by. Regarding..."made today"... Lots of 1 girl and 2 guy movies. (Finger cuffs...anybody?) |

Tonight I couldn't decide between my unwatched Criterions, so I finally decided to watch a film released by Olive that I've been saving for a special evening: Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep in Ironweed. Talk about a master class in acting! But you know what struck me when the disc started? How much the Olive Films mascot looks like the eye on the end of the line in the Criterion cartoon! ![]() |

I think it's a shame that she didn't do more comedy. As good as she was in drama, she sparkles in light comedy. I just watched Christmas in Connecticut recently, and she was delightful. Now, please Lord, someone release The Lady Eve and Ball of Fire.

I suppose when people mention George Roy Hill Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting automatically come to mind. I enjoyed both of those films, but my favorite Hill film is A Little Romance. I think it is an underrated gem that features interesting performances with Diane Lane at the beginning of her career and Laurence Olivier towards the end of his. On a completely different note: I watched The Brood last night. I enjoyed it slightly more than Scanners. Art Hindle is better as a lead actor than Stephen Lack, but that's not saying too much. Oliver Reed kept me interested in The Brood more than anything. I won't be purchasing The Brood when Criterion releases it, but I can see the appeal for others. Dead Ringers is my favorite Cronenberg "body horror" film right now, although I haven't seen Shivers or eXistenZ. Also, I tried to watch Eraserhead last night, but had to stop it after the chicken started doing weird stuff at the kitchen table around the 15 or 20 minute mark. I will try to watch it again sometime because I am a Lynch fan and I have watched a significant portion of his filmography. I'm starting to think I'm just not that much of a "body horror" film fan. When I saw Breakfast of Champions over a year ago I thought it was bad. I even wrote up a detailed review though I haven't uploaded it anywhere since it hasn't had a Blu-ray release. |

I thought the thread might get a kick out of this, if anyone hasn't seen it.
I can't decide whether this is one of the funniest or saddest things I've ever seen... Wait, yes I can. It's hilarious. Drunk Orson Welles for Paul Masson: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VFevH5vP32s |
