Well I don't know if she deserves all those nominations since I haven't seen many of the movies, but the last I seen The French Lieutenants Woman, and she was amazing, also the small bit with a song of her in Into The Woods was the best part of that movie.

I guess the problem is the Academy tends to nominate within a certain group of actors and foreign actors don't get as much recognition most of the time, so it is not like she is competing with every other great actress out there.

The same goes for films nominated for best picture. There is an artificial restriction placed on that category that benefits Hollywood.

Default Streep

[QUOTE=Ray Jackson;11669048]I consider the following performances to be the work of an acting Grandmaster:

-The Deer Hunter
-Sophie's Choice
-The French Lieutenant's Woman
-Out of Africa
-A Cry in the Dark
-The Bridges of Madison County
-Adaptation
-The Devil Wears Prada (even though I'm not a big fan of the movie)
-Doubt

And those are just a few off the top of my head.

...I'm sure there are many more.[/QUO

I also thought she was awesome in The Manchurian Candidate remake, though the movie itself was kinda weak

To add to your list. I thought that she was deserving for Kramer vs Kramer as well.

Out of Africa? Really? She's notoriously bad in that. Like a piece of wood with SOME kind of accent (certainly not Danish).

KillaCam isn't the only one that hasn't "truly lived". I've never seen Sunrise either, but I'll definitely fix that problem by picking up the Eureka release at some point whenever I make another Amazon UK order.

I think that Meryl Streep is quite effective in The River Wild, where she plays against her element with surprising results. It's not a cinematic game changer like some of the films on your list, but it's a good little action flick, especially for the time of its release.

Totally unrelated to anything, but I just saw the 70mm showing of Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight. Five stars, and it's a strong contender for my favorite film by this director since Pulp Fiction.

Rudeness doesn't suit you, and it certainly has no place in this forum.

Streep has won 144 acting awards, and received 290 other nominations. I think that indicates that she is highly respected by her peers and members of the critical fraternity far beyond just the Academy.

Then, too, if you would set aside your churlish attitude for a moment, you might also remember that for several years, Streep has proven to be the only female star with enough box office clout to guarantee a box office hit during the summer months, which are usually dominated by expensive actions films with roman numeral attached to the titles. Being a consistent box office draw is solid proof of one's standing with a significant portion of the movie-going public.

I acknowledged in my original post that there are those, like you and the author of that one article you linked to, that Streep's popularity is not universal, so your point was already acknowledged. "What a laugh", indeed.

Sunrise is amazing, but if you're going to order some MOC silents, make sure to add Coeur Fidele.

I sold off my existing Blu-rays of Gilda and The Manchurian Candidate today at a used store down the street to make way for the Criterion double-dips.

I'd be lying if I said that it didn't hurt my heart to part with the region free Italian disc of Gilda, simply because I do love that film enough to own multiple copies, but it will do me well to save some room in my storage bins.

I also parted ways with my DVD of Hitchcock's The Wrong Man to make way for the Warner Archive Blu-ray release. Woo hoo!

You must be really sensitive if you found the post rude. There is a group of people on here who would prefer that if someone disagreed, they do so in the most polite manner possible, as to not offend anyone's sensitive film opinions. Seriously, sometimes it's a little over the top. People need to relax.

Getting back to the point of your post. Let's be real here. All of these awards and nominations are just bandwagon awards. Once you get "established" as a great actress, it's quite easy to receive awards and nominations after that. Look at Jennifer Lawrence. She can only play 1 note and 1 character and yet she already has multiple wins/nominations, and is also a box office draw. It means nothing.

What 1 note characteristics do her characters have in common from Winter's Bone and American Hustle (2 of her 3 acting nominations)? I'm not her number 1 fan, just curious.

Could not disagree with this statement more vehemently. Lawrence has more than shown her range. With all of your bandwagon talk, I'm surprised you didn't use Kate Winslet as your example. If any actress is being positioned as the modern Meryl, it's her. (To avoid any misunderstandings, I quite like Winslet's work.)

The silent films I have seen are:
Metropolis
Faust
The Kid
Modern Times
The Freshman
The Crowd
Nosferatu

And I have seen a couple of shorts. I own The Thief of Bagdad, but I haven't seen it completely.
I loved every single silent. The weakest one, in my opinion, is Nosferatu. I thought it was too slow. My favorites are Metropolis and Faust.

Thanks.

Two shorts i've always loved are:
La Cabina/The Phone Box (1972)
Harpya (1978)
Harpya is the more surrealistic of the two i guess.

Some non-70s suggestions would be:

The Color of Pomegranates (1969)
Un Senor Muy Viejo Con Unas Alas Enormes (A VERY OLD MAN WITH ENORMOUS WINGS) (1988)

If you love Metropolis and Faust then i would suggest Die Nibelungen should be on your next "to buy" list.

Die Nibelungen is fantastic, however, only the first part Siegfried. Kreimheld's Revenge (the second half) was an absolute slog. I couldn't even finish it.
