I actually didn't find out about that film until a couple of years ago. The Zappa soundtrack alone makes me want to see it, although the prices of the DVD are a bit off-putting. I don't think I'll ever pay $25 for a DVD again, so I'll have to wait until they show it on TCM again (if they ever do).

Well, I generally don't consider Marxists to be leftists in the first place, but that's a potentially very long discussion, and way off track.

The newer transfer was also created partially from the original 65mm negative. There are more screen comparisons here: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film4/blu-r...ti_blu-ray.htm
Thanks for the info. When I checked out some of the screenshots on my PC instead of my tablet, I could really see the difference in sharpness/grain structure. I'm just going to wait for either the B&N sale in July, or the upcoming Criterion flash sale and get the box.

Darla Marks is one of my all-time favorite characters. She is SO awful. And endlessly quotable.

These a-holes could definitely stake a claim as most unlikable characters in any Criterion film.

Or how about this guy? Although he is pretty funny in a twisted way.

On a side note, Karl Marx is perhaps the most confusing, esoteric writer I've ever tried to read.

I have a Bachelor's degree in English Lit. and a Masters in Journalism...and trying to read The Communist Manifesto was like trying to make sense of the plot of Last Year at Marienbad.

...it was a nightmare.

I think TCM Underground showed it twice and that was it. Fascinating film with non-stop Carey start to finish. It's one of my "Damn, I should have recorded that!" titles. I don't know who controls the rights to it but it definitely would fit nicely in the Collection alongside some of the other cult classics like The Honeymoon Killers, Carnival of Souls, etc. You're right about the current DVD and it's pricing-$25 and, to add insult to injury, it's a MOD!

What did you think of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, by the way?

Side note: I once tried to read Hitler's Mein Kampf, but couldn't make it through 15 pages. So. Boring. I can't imagine anyone in Germany actually read the whole thing in back in the day.

I generally like disabled people and kids, but I hate these two:

(Texas Chainsaw Massacre and House by the cemetery. Neither are Criterion ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Yeah, that scene always hits me a little close to home, because I went to high school with quite a few belligerent rednecks like that, and that guy reminds me of some of those real people.

That's why I think Darla is likable as a character -- OK, not likable, but enjoyable. She's so totally insanely over-the-top that she ins't likely to really remind anyone of someone they had to endure during school.

At least, I really, really hope no one had to endure someone like her.
