I can see why some might want a new transfer, it's pretty soft. Even though, I felt the softness was suited enough. It's a very pretty transfer, with great color. I suppose I'm happy with it. The audio track was surprisingly vibrant.

I think the complaints were more on the side that it's too grainy at the point that it becomes "noisy".
But I love grain, so I didn't have a problem with that.

I've only seen Three Outlaw Samurai so far and I really enjoyed it. It only has a trailer for special features, but it's still worth owning for the movie and A/V presentation.

I didn't realize how many Criterions were part of the Amazon sale... just got Eating Raoul and The Times of Harvey Milk. Also eyeing a few DVDs but I'm scared they'll be upgraded to Blu soon!

My birthday is the 19th, but my girlfriend couldn't wait to give me my presents(I may have encouraged her a little to ). I got some office stuff, some more ammo, and The Apu Trilogy! She is not as into film as me, but she likes movies. When I showed her the video of the insane amount of work that went into restoring the Apu Trilogy, she said she decided she was going to get me that because she wanted to be a part of supporting future restorations like that and knew I would to(not to mention I repeatedly told how much I wanted to see them ). I almost shed one manly tear, she is a keeper!

Now I decided I am also gonna treat myself to a couple of these amazon sale criterions for my birthday, but alas, I am a 25 year old with not unlimited funds so I can only get two. I have narrowed down to twelve...this is extremely hard. So I figured I would ask my fellow bluray.com brethren for some help in deciding which to get. What I have in my cart is:
-Ikiru
-Nashville
-Dressed to Kill
-My Own Private Idaho
-The Killers
-The Freshman
-Safety Last!
-The Gold Rush
-Master of the House
-The Phantom Carriage
-The Complete Jean Vigo
-Hoop Dreams

The only one I have seen is The Gold Rush which I loved, and my girlfriend wants to see My Own Private Idaho(and I do to), and I was a big fan of Blow Out so another De Palma interests me, and I want more silent films in my collection, etc, etc...I need help

Kagemusha is pretty long and a bit slow, but the story and the filming of it is great. If you're a Kurosawa fan, it's a no-brainer. I'd say it's comparable to Ran.

I don't remember much of Three Outlaw Samurai or Sword of Doom. I thought about getting rid of them, but I popped them in the player to give them another shot and wound up liking what I saw. Didn't watch them all the way, but saw enough to know I wanted to keep them. They are visually cool and pretty fun.

Sword of Doom is jagged and incomplete, but has some stunning images and breathtaking fight sequences, and an eerie style. Kurosawa said that Kagamusha was basically a dry run for Ran

Gotta love Kurosawa

According to Lucas, Kurosawa used 5000 extras for the final battle sequence, filming for a whole day, then he cut it down to 90 seconds in the final release. Many beautiful special effects, and a number of scenes that filled holes in the story, landed on the "cutting-room floor."

Truffaut's Two English Girls. It is a period drama that is somewhat comparable to Jules and Jim. TEG has more of a "period piece" feel to it, has less style, and has a very stiff Jean-Pierre Leaud as the male lead. Not bad,though.

Monsoon Wedding is a great film. I would recommend giving it a watch. The music is fantastic!

Just got my flash sale order and interested to see that the copy of Foreign Correspondent in the Hitch box set is a single BD in a plastic case, as opposed to the dual-format edition still featured for sale on the Criterion site.

I already had the dual-format edition and assumed the same would be in the set, so was thinking I would sell the extra copy. But now I'm inclined to keep it, given I like digipaks and would prefer them for all CC releases.
