Interested in one of those, so hopefully a couple more will be added to the slate.

Like Svankmajer's Alice, Perfect Blue, Adventures of Prince Achmed? Anyone?

Funimation still has the rights to Akira I believe

Repackaging specifically, in a Steelbook this time:

If Criterion were to tackle an anime, I'd want them to do something that doesn't have a release here, like Perfect Blue. Even eliminating the anime aspect,, I think the film itself would be a great fit for them.

Only on laserdisc
I remember all the excitement when it was announced that they were releasing it on DVD. It was one of those films that people had been longing for - along with the SW & Indy trilogies - to be released on DVD

I have the Metal pak & IMO nothing released since has come close to the DVD release when it comes to extras

But if you're going back historically, the Toei Doga 1960s films would be pretty "important" to the history of Japanese animation. The Tale of the White Serpent (AKA Panda and the Magic Serpent) needs a proper non-dodgy release.

Anyways, I was going to say it makes me sad that so few people seem to have seen this wonderful film. I got it in the first place for these reasons:

-- First and foremost, I'm an unabashed Fassbender fan. I think the guy is pure magic and can make almost anything good, or possibly great. His filmography is like one miraculous performance after another (with a few exceptions, granted; but no matter how good you are, you still need quality material).

-- The trailer looked fantastic.

-- The story sounded interesting.

-- Although I haven't yet seen Andrea Arnold's American Honey, something I need to remedy soon, I read a lot of good things about it.

-- It won the Jury Prize at Cannes.

So, when I finally saw the film I was blown away. Fassbender turned in his usual top-notch performance. But the real revelation was the girl who played the daughter, Katie Jarvis. When this film was made she was somewhere around 17. She was explosive and fascinating and tragic all at the same time. She was really something. She's got another film coming up that's in post right now, a revenge tale called Two Graves. But I don't think she's a main character. But I'll definitely see it just for her.

The film itself is so good. Both Arnold's writing and her direction are more than solid, and the story is really engaging. It hits all the notes, high, low, and in between. And as I said, the performances are just wonderful. I really wish more people would see and talk about this film. I encourage anyone who enjoys small films that are character driven -- which I assume at least in this thread would be almost everyone -- to see this if they have the chance.

Anyways, yeah, I liked the film. A lot. Obviously.

There was one negative, but it's a funny one. It's set in some poor part of London. Movies set in certain parts of London, or Britain in general, often have me this close to turning on the subs. Heck, I watched London Boulevard the other night and I had the same problem. Pretty good film by the way. Of course, I say that about pretty much any film with Keira Knightley. Or Colin Farrell, for that matter. Anyhow, yeah, certain British accents give me trouble. But that's obviously not the fault of the film, that's 100% on me.
I liked what Fassbender brought to his role and I liked him, but
[Show spoiler] I didn't get the incredibly bad dancing sequences and I certainly don't agree w/ what has become quite a cliché: life's a b**ch and then you die.

I don't understand what point the film is trying to make about anything and in my opinion, it suffers from the fact that
[Show spoiler]the villain is infinitely more likeable than the dopey mother and daughter
.

not what I'd call a completely bad film, but overall I didn't care for it.

London Boulevard, btw.. is brutal. so incredibly brutal. 4 star trailer, though... too bad it took 4 minutes of film to convince me that it was a complete misfire and was going no place interesting.

Part of the reason for the bad dance sequences is to show that so many people think that their mediocre ability will lead them to a better life. In our day and age people are so disillusioned that they can become rich and famous despite having no talent at something. In Tank, she felt her dancing would lead her away from the life she hated. Which, to me, is a play on the aforementioned.

It's been awhile since i saw this, but are you saying you found
[Show spoiler]a married guy cheating on his wife who rapes his girlfriend's daughter infinitely more likable than a 15 year old girl trying to figure life out without any real satisfactory role models?

Sure it's a joy, but I still want more out of it. Since it's BFI it shouldn't be hard for Criterion to get a hold of it.

That would be awesome, again, I would really love to see what the main actress is doing these days. I've bugged Criterion about it a billion times now, and I'm not the only one, so they must be at least thinking about it.

True, but like I said the previous post (above), Criterion means the deluxe version!

But yes in the long run I would love to see more of movies that aren't released on blu ray, like Perfect Blue (really all of the Satoshi Kon movies on Criterion would be great, though Paprika's Sony blu ray is spectacular too) or the Adventures of Prince Achmed.

Overall: MORE ANIMATION!

Seriously I get why they aren't doing Disney or Ghibli, but they have so many movies to go with and they've released so little animation. Just 3 movies, which I appreciate, but we need to see more. Of ANY genre/medium criterion needs more of, Animation would be it.

Thank God! I've been debating pulling the trigger on the existing Blu-ray, because I've been on a big Sex Pistols rediscovery kick lately. I'm glad that I waited.

Correct me if I'm wrong.
But is that the movie about the daddy's girl who falls in love with the rocker boy who then develop a cocaine addiction?

Or is that something else? Forgive me If I'm insulting anyone XD

Here's a not so funny but somewhat ironic story about Sid and Nancy.

I was browsing the DVD releases on Criterion's website last night and noticed that on the list (25 items per page), the film was no longer listed as "Out of Print". However, when clicking on the actual release, it said "Out of Print".

This got me thinking but I never thought it'd amount to anything other than Criterion's website being buggy.

Subtitles would be great. I can't even watch my DVD copy because evidently their English is not the same as my version.

Agreed, I would love to see more animated titles from Criterion. I'd be curious about anything they would touch in that realm.

I am dying to see an uncut HD release of The Plague Dogs (1982) from them. They've already released a Rosen film so it's another safe baby step toward releasing more.
