Not to mention that the (MGM) Rebecca standalone disc has been spotted at places like 7-Eleven for $5 in the past.

It sells for $50+ on eBay

Yeah, I realize the 3-pack is OOP now, and finding Rebecca at 7-Eleven at this point is YMMV at best, but it's not like the MGM edition wasn't in print for years. People who don't have Rebecca should absolutely be excited about this new Criterion release. As far as I'm concerned though, this and other Criterion re-releases get a big fat "meh" from me. Criterions aren't exactly cheap, and I'd rather put that money toward movies that aren't/weren't already on Blu-ray. Maybe it's just me?

Possibly The Piano Teacher for me. Disappointed to see the Lynch doc won't be a supplement on one of his films.

Also, just seeing the word piano had me yearning for The Pianist to be announced by the good people at Criterion.

I don't get the praise of Reichardt's movies, I'd rather endure a root canal.

The David Lynch movie I saw the other night, I really liked it.

I find her boring too.

Lousy month imo. Were there any hints for The Piano Teacher?

For the briefest of moments, I thought the Pianist was getting a Criterion release.

My Rebecca blu is unopened. Hmm....

I'm 99.9% sure that this Rebecca artwork is my favorite Criterion cover artwork of all-time.

In for Rebecca and Certain Women.

Love Reichardt. I own all of her films except for her debut, River of Grass, which I've never seen. But intend of purchasing blind.

Certain Women was a hard one to grade though. The segment with Michelle Williams was bland and utterly useless. I can't think of a single reason to justify its existence. It was awful. I'd rate it 2.5/5. The Laura Dern segment was very good, very compelling. Laura Dern gives a great performance as usual. I give it a solid 4/5. The segment with Kristen Stewart and Lily Gladstone is the best piece of filmmaking I've seen in a good 5-6 years. It was breathtaking, poignant and utterly heartbreaking. An easy 5/5. Even though I like the Laura Dern segment quite a bit, I just wish there was a way they could have stretched the Lily/Kristen segment into like a 75 minute feature.

So its kind of hard to rate the entire film as a whole. Its a definite purchase for me. But its sort of a fractured film. Its a shame they couldn't have done something better with Michelle Williams.

I have the OOP MGM set, but very happy to double-dip for Rebecca given the new scan. Hopefully, Spellbound and Notorious will follow.

Definitely digging the Rebecca artwork. As for the releases this is probably the worst month in quite a while. Not to pile on Kelly Reichardt here but my initial reaction after seeing Certain Women in the theater was it was something I should be seeing on HBO. Maybe The Piano Teacher will be a grab for me at some point. If Criterion is going to release anything from last year it should The Handmaiden and Toni Erdmann as they both deserve better releases.

I would love to have a Criterion release of Paterson, too.

Festival grabbed my attention. I noticed Howlin' Wolf and Son House named...for those who've seen this, is there a good dose of the blues in it? Or at least that electric blues sound found with Muddy Waters in the 60s?

I wonder if Michael Haneke's Funny Games (1997) will ever receive Criterion treatment.

*shudders*

Of course, I'd love to see Time of the Wolf and Caché released by Criterion.

When I saw Caché at the theater, one scene elicited the strongest audience reaction that I've ever seen. If you're familiar with the movie, then you know the scene that I'm talking about.

Last weekend, I saw It Comes at Night, and found it to be an amazing film with a distinct Haneke vibe to it. It would make a great double feature with Time of the Wolf.

I was wondering about that yesterday. I saw that Kino had put out a DVD box set of Haneke films, which is OOP, and Criterion has two BD releases from there (Code Unknown and The Piano Teacher). I wonder if they have all of them?

  • The Piano Teacher
  • Funny Games
  • Code Unknown
  • The Castle
  • Benny’s Video
  • The Seventh Continent
  • 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance
