Anything direct from Criterion is a bad deal if you live outside the US, sadly.
Still waiting on half my B&N order from the beginning of November. Tomorrow is the last day of the delivery window and the other half shipped at the same time and has been here a week already. Not a good sign. |

So I just placed an order for an I Knew Her Well poster and a Criterion Designs book. I went to check Amazon to see how the prices were there and it looks like they are only available from sellers and they was $149 for one. I loled and used my 20% off coupon and bought it for like $65.

Yeah, B&N are reportedly such a hassle I might shell out the extra few bucks at Amazon for future orders.
Another 48 hours until I can get in touch with them and organise a replacement shipment. Was expecting my Arrow sale order earlier this week too. |

I grabbed a handful of Criterion titles in a brick-and-mortar B&N store in November, but, for the most part, B&N has been replaced by Amazon Prime. I just got tired of the unwieldy B&N website, I got tired of the way that new Criterion releases are often mysteriously missing from availability during the sales, and I got tired of seeing certain Blu-ray titles listed online as being available at certain stores, only to arrive at the stores and find out that they didn't actually have the Blu-ray, but only the DVD, and I got tired of seeing all of the non-Criterion Blu-rays jacked up to $30 or so on the website. The few dollars that a membership would save me during each Criterion sale would not justify the $25 membership fee. I am tempted to renew my membership just to support a brick-and-mortar bookstore chain in a world where there are not any left, just on general principle, but their day-to-day business style keeps exhausting my patience. |

I let mine lapse in July, and only renewed to get maximum benefit from switching my preorder of the Olympic set from Amazon to B&N during the recent 50% sale (which I only did after learning from B&N sale guru member hariseldon that one could actually get the sale discount on a pre-release title). The B&N website is awful, and was the main reason I let membership lapse. Plus, the member free Express shipping is a joke; items would typically take days to be dispatched, and arrive a week or more after placing the order. Having said this, when I was in my local store yesterday the place was buzzing with holiday shoppers. I got some coffee, picked up a copy of a magazine about collecting albums on vinyl, and sat back for 20 minutes. It's good to be able to do this, and as you say, it's probably important to support the physical stores. But B&N does need to "get a grip" on many aspects of its operation. |

I used to buy vinyl and the odd book from my nearest B&N when in San Diego on business, just for the buzz of doing that and supporting a B&M store. It is similar in the UK - HMV used to be the evil empire but now they are the only high street retailer left they are now the "independent" and Amazon are the evil empire
![]() But I may be done with B&N's Criterion sales - there are horrific tales of import duties (one member in the UK was asked for £51 to take delivery of Le Samourai ![]() ![]() ![]() (It doesn't help with B&N that my single order of four titles was shipped in three packages, on three consecutive days, after lying in limbo for a week. Apart from the fact it must cost them heaps more to do it this way, it means I could potentially be up for £44 of customs and fees when they arrive, due to the £8 fee per package levied by our Post Office). |

However, I live less than 10 minutes away from a B&N, so that makes it worth hiking up and just buying in person, and I get the satisfaction of supporting a brick-and-mortar store. |

Nice, super excited by The Virgin Suicides and hope that these Paramount titles are an indication of a bigger deal and that a Dead Zone Blu-ray happens.

I see we're piling on B&N.com, so here's my two cents...
I pre-ordered some WB Archive titles a few months ago from B&N which turned into a complete clusterf***, with my discs arriving about a month after they should've gotten here. As a result, I didn't order any Criterions from them last month, and am just compiling a list for the Feb/Mar flash sale. I'm actually hoping that what Walmart has done with the more popular pre-order titles becomes a habit (Breakfast Club, Silence Of The Lambs, Night Of The Living Dead being knocked down to $18.31). I haven't had any difficulties ordering online from them in the past. |

The thing that I had to get used to is that they run their b&m stores as a separate business unit from their on-line store. I found this out again when I went to pick up an Arrow title (Dillinger) during the recent Arrow sale only to be told at the register that the sale price was only available on-line. This to me is strange business practice. It's as if they're trying to drive business away from their b&m stores and to their on-line store. It's working. I really only go into the store during their Criterion sales now. I go straight to the register, ask for my reserved items, pay and leave. I probably didn't save enough this year to justify the cost of the membership. I actually meant to not renew this year but had forgotten that I had it on auto-renew. This year will probably be my last year. |

Not sure if anyone saw this yet, but Ferris Bueller's Day Off will be released next year.
